Organotin contamination in sediments from the Western Mediterranean enclosures following 10 years of TBT regulation.

Organotin (OT) compounds, namely butyl and phenyl, were measured in 38 recent sediments collected in harbours of the Western Mediterranean Sea (Northern: 4 and Southern: 9) and domestic and industrial sewage disposal sites (Northern: 9 and Southern: 1). Butyltins were the predominant tin species identified as being tributyltin (TBT) widespread in the whole area which suggests recent inputs of OTs. The highest levels of TBT were detected in commercial harbours associated with inputs from large vessels (average value: 5.0 microg TBT g(-1). Moreover, relatively high TBT values were also detected

Sediment microbial community structure and mercury methylation in mercury-polluted Clear Lake, California.

Spatial and temporal variations in sediment microbial community structure in a eutrophic lake polluted with inorganic mercury were identified using polar lipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. Microbial community structure was strongly related to mercury methylation potential, sediment organic carbon content, and lake location. Pore water sulfate, total mercury concentrations, and organic matter C/N ratios showed no relationships with microbial community structure. Seasonal changes and changes potentially attributable to temperature regulation of bacterial membranes were detectable but were less im

Distribution of total mercury and methyl mercury in water, sediment, and fish from south Florida estuaries.

Concentrations of total mercury and methyl mercury were determined in sediment and fish collected from estuarine waters of Florida to understand their distribution and partitioning. Total mercury concentrations in sediments ranged from 1 to 219 ng/g dry wt. Methyl mercury accounted for, on average, 0.77% of total mercury in sediment. Methyl mercury concentrations were not correlated with total mercury or organic carbon content in sediments. The concentrations of total mercury in fish muscle were between 0.03 and 2.22 (mean: 0.31) micrograms/g, wet wt, with methyl mercury contributing 83% of to

Wood preservative leachates from docks in an estuarine environment.

Environmental concentrations and biological effects of certain metals and organic compounds found in wood preservatives were examined. The study focused on leachates from private residential docks in South Carolina tidal creeks. Copper, chromium, arsenic, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in composite samples of surficial sediments and naturally occurring oyster populations (Crassostrea virginica) from creeks with high densities of docks, and from nearby reference creeks with no docks. In some cases, metal concentrations in sediments and oysters were higher immediately

Halophilic Anaerobic Cultures Enriched with CO2:H2 from Different Saline Environments Reveal Unknown Autotrophic Bacterial Diversity and Modular Carbon Fixation Pathways.

The subsurface sediments of saline-aquatic systems host diverse microbes, with unclear ecological roles and challenging lab cultivability. Chemolithotrophic anaerobes involved in CO2-fixation are one of the poorly studied groups. This study focused on understanding these bacteria from subsurface sediments of four representative saline environments, two marine (i.e., Coastal Arabian and Bay of Bengal seas) and two lake (Sambhar and Lonar) systems through enrichment and metagenomics. Enrichment cultures with bicarbonate/CO2 and hydrogen as the carbon and energy sources, respectively, showed CO2

Occurrence and risks of pharmaceuticals in Mahdia's coastline (Tunisia): distribution, antibiotic resistance, and ecotoxicological impact.

Pharmaceutical active compounds (PHACs) pose a significant risk to aquatic ecosystems due to their persistence and potential toxic effects. Despite their documented presence in various coastal environments, their occurrence along the Mahdia coastline remains largely unexplored. Using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS), we analyzed seawater and sediment samples collected over six consecutive months from Mahdia's marine environment. Results revealed that antibiotics were the most prevalent PHACs, with ofloxacin reaching 401 ng/L in seawater. Other cons

Induced antibiotic production against pathogenic Klebsiella pneumoniae by bacterial coculture.

The world is running short of effective antibiotics due to rapid development of antibiotic resistance against currently available antibiotics. The frequency of new antibiotic discovery from conventional axenic cultures has decreased significantly. In current study, azithromycin and ciprofloxacin supplemented plates were used as selection filter for isolation of antibiotic-producing bacteria from Gomti river sediments. All bacterial isolates grown on antibiotic supplemented plates are antibiotic-resistant. Some of these, antibiotic-resistant isolates have ability to produce antibiotics of same

Potential buffering capacity of naturally distributed carbonate minerals against future rises in atmospheric CO2 and coastal acidification: the Yellow Sea and three major estuaries in China.

The dissolution of marine carbonate minerals represents a scalable carbon dioxide (CO2) removal approach toward global climate goals. In this study, potential buffering capacity of naturally distributed carbonate minerals against future rises in atmospheric CO2 and thereby coastal acidification were assessed using field data obtained in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and Chinese major estuaries. Results showed that highly soluble carbonate minerals such as calcite and aragonite dominated surface sediments, constituting 8-12 % of dry weight of sediments in Chinese major estuaries, while lowly solubl

Methanobacterium aridiramus sp. nov., a methanogen isolated from potential methane hydrate bearing area offshore southwestern Taiwan.

A novel mesophilic, hydrogenotrophic methanogen, strain CWC-01T, was isolated from the sediment sample of the piston core collected at station 3 at Good Weather Ridge area offshore southwestern Taiwan from ORI-902A cruise in 2009. Cells of strain CWC-01T are rod-shaped, measuring 0.4-0.5 µm in width and 1.0-2.0 µm in length. Strain CWC-01T utilizes formate and H2/CO2 to produce methane, but not secondary alcohol, methanol, ethanol, methylamines or acetate as catabolic substrates. The optimal growth conditions are 37 °C, 0.043 M NaCl and pH 6.3. Growth effectors tests indicate tryptone, but not

Impact of pH and salinity fluctuations on oxidation of Fe(II) by nitrate-reducing microorganisms enriched from the reduced tidal sediment of an extreme acidic river (Río Tinto, Spain).

Nitrate reduction coupled to Fe(II) oxidation (NRFeOx) contributes to Fe cycling in the estuarian sediments of the Río Tinto river (Huelva, Spain). However, it is not yet known (i) whether and which NRFeOx microorganisms can be enriched from the reduced sediment layer and (ii) how in situ pH and salinity fluctuations affect NRFeOx. Therefore, we (i) used two different approaches, such as microcosm experiments (sediment amended with either NO3-/Fe2+aq or acetate/NO3-/Fe2+aq) and enrichment cultures (medium amended with acetate/NO3-/Fe2+aq) to enrich NRFeOx microorganisms to (ii) test their sali

Trophodynamics and health risk assessment of heavy metals in seafood from a tropical estuary in the gulf of Guinea.

Seafood is an essential protein source for coastal communities. However, they can accumulate heavy metals from human activities which could pose a potential health risk to consumers. In this study, we investigated the distribution, bioaccumulation, trophic transfer and potential human health risk of heavy metals in sediments, shell and fin fish collected from the Escravos Estuary in southern Nigeria. Heavy metals (Ni, Cd, V, Pb and Cu) in sediments, periwinkles and tongue soles from the two study sites were lower than the permissible limits for fishery products. The metal distribution in fish

Origin and modern microbial ecology of secondary mineral deposits in Lehman Caves, Great Basin National Park, NV, USA.

Lehman Caves is an extensively decorated high desert cave that represents one of the main tourist attractions in Great Basin National Park, Nevada. Although traditionally considered a water table cave, recent studies identified abundant speleogenetic features consistent with a hypogenic and, potentially, sulfuric acid origin. Here, we characterized white mineral deposits in the Gypsum Annex (GA) passage to determine whether these secondary deposits represent biogenic minerals formed during sulfuric acid corrosion and explored microbial communities associated with these and other mineral deposi
