OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to discuss advances in imaging and diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias.
CONCLUSION: Skeletal dysplasias are a heterogeneous group of disorders affecting bone and cartilage and characterized by abnormal shape, growth, and integrity of the skeleton. These disorders may be inherited in a multitude of genetic patterns-autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, somatic mosaic, imprinting errors of metabolism, X-linked, and teratogenic exposure. Most are monogenic diseases. The prenatal diagnosis is challenging; the findings are first seen during routine ultraso

Secondary osteoporosis is a bone disease characterized by decreased bone mass that predisposes fractures due to underlying disorders or medication. Disorders of the endocrine system, such as primary hyperparathyroidism, hyperthyroidism, hypogonadism, growth hormone deficiency, Cushing's syndrome, and anorexia nervosa frequently cause secondary osteoporosis. In those diseases, hormone excess or deficiency affects functions of osteoblasts, osteocyte, and osteoclasts, leading to aberrant bone remodeling. Bisphosphonates are the first-choice pharmacological agents for fracture prevention in most p

Hereditary persistence of foetal haemoglobin (HPFH) is a rare inherited haemoglobin disorders in India. We encountered five cases of HPFH-3 in heterozygous condition in a single family of western Odisha, India. All the cases had raised % HbF (26.1±3.23%) with pancellular distribution of HbF in erythrocytes. There were no abnormalities found in the red cell indices. All the cases were asymptomatic till date with normal growth and development. Molecular confirmation of this haemoglobin disorders is important for control and prevention of haemoglobinopathies in this region.

Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace element, necessary for development and growth of the organism. The adequate content of this element in the body determines proper metabolism of amino acids, cholesterol and carbohydrates. This mineral influences activity of several enzymes involved in metabolic and redox processes. Mn absorption and retention disturbances may participate in etiopathogenesis of some diseases and disorders. This article is a review of knowledge about the role of Mn in etiopathogenesis and prevention of selected diseases: brain disorders, diabetes, lipid disturbances and cance

Considerable progress has been made in delineating the molecular genetic basis of the human chondrodysplasias. Two genes emerge as harboring mutations found in patients with the most common disorders. Mutations in the type II collagen gene account for most spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia and spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia-like clinical disorders, whereas mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 gene are responsible for achondroplasia, thanatophoric dysplasia, and hypochondroplasia. A substantial portion of remaining patients have mutations of the genes encoding cartilage oligomeric matr

BACKGROUND: Small-for-gestational-age (SGA) neonates are at a higher risk of adult-onset metabolic disorders because of fetal programming in the presence of growth restriction. Nephrogenesis may also be affected in fetal growth restriction. This study hypothesized that urinary podocalyxin levels, a marker of nephrogenesis, would be lower among preterm SGA neonates as compared to appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) controls.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled gestation-matched SGA (n = 90) and AGA (n = 45) neonates born at 260-366 weeks of gestation. The SGA group comprised of 45 n

The complex relationship between body (dis)satisfaction, identity, and disordered eating in adolescence has been highlighted in previous studies. However, longitudinal research on this interplay using a holistic approach in assessing embodiment is lacking. The current study used three-wave longitudinal data (T1: N = 923; 59.6 % female; Mage = 16.19, SD = 1.31, range = 13-21 years) to examine the development of embodiment during adolescence and to explore its (temporal) associations with identity, eating disorder symptoms, and eating competence. First, cross-lagged analyses revealed that embodi

The mechanisms of action (MA) of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in affective disorders are poorly understood. We synthesized and discussed the evidence provided by primary studies and systematic reviews in humans. There are differences in the methylation of candidate genes involved in the response to ECT. Functioning of the hippocampal serotonin receptor 5-HT1B is associated with the response in patients with major depressive disorder (PMDD), while the striatal dopamine transporter would participate in the response of PMDD and in patients with bipolar disorders (BD). The only neurotrophic fac

Childhood wasting and stunting affect large numbers of children globally. Both are important risk factors for illness and death yet, despite the fact that these conditions can share common risk factors and are often seen in the same child, they are commonly portrayed as relatively distinct manifestations of undernutrition. In 2014, the Wasting and Stunting project was launched by the Emergency Nutrition Network. Its aim was to better understand the complex relationship and associations between wasting and stunting and examine whether current separations that were apparent in approaches to poli

Neurotrophins are important regulators of neuronal function in the developing and adult brain and thus play a critical role in sustaining normal behavioral function. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been the most widely studied neurotrophin because of its important role as modulator of synaptic plasticity, which is essential to the regulation of experience-dependent behavior. Extensive work implicates BDNF in hippocampus-dependent forms of learning and memory, although it also regulates other cognitive processes. A role for BDNF in anxiety-related disorders and aggressive behavior

Three children suffering from cystic fibrosis, two girls aged 15 and 7 and one boy aged 18 years, presented growth retardation resulting from increased energy requirements and relative undernourishment. Since oral hyperalimentation was insufficiently efficacious, extra nutrition was administered by tube (at night): a naso-gastric tube, a percutaneous endoscopial gastrostomy catheter or an intragastric tube with a stopper in the skin. All three patients achieved a higher percentile line in the weight/height growth diagram, with stable or improved pulmonary function.

Case report of a 18 year old boy with short stature, microceophaly, mental retardation and multiple dysmorphic signs. At the age of 9 years a severe generalised osteoporosis was discovered. A pathological fracture of the greenwoor type healed without proper callus formation. The osteoporosis persists without signs of either deterioration or improvement. The serum phosphorus is slightly decreased, while serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase and renal functions are normal. The main biochemical finding is a constant hyperclaciuria of 6-13 mg/kg/24 h, which can be corrected by treatment with oral so

INTRODUCTION: Valproic acid (VPA) is an effective anti-epileptic drug clinically used to treat seizures, bipolar disorders and neuropathic pain in women of reproductive age. Current approval of VPA for psychiatric conditions and migraine has increased the number of VPA exposed pregnancies. VPA crosses the placental barrier and induces birth defects in about 10% of exposed pregnancies. In addition, VPA exposure results in neurodevelopmental disorders in children without any overt birth defects. The current study was designed to investigate the effects of in utero VPA exposure on fetoplacental g
