A Case of Functional Para-Aortic Paraganglioma Causing Accelerated Hypertension in an HIV-Positive Patient With Negative 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT Findings: Successful Laparoscopic Management.

Functional retroperitoneal paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors that typically present with catecholamine-mediated hypertension. 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT is widely used as a preferred functional imaging modality for the localization of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL), though false-negative results may occur. The coexistence of paraganglioma and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is exceptionally rare, with no prior reports of functional retroperitoneal paraganglioma in HIV-positive patients. We report a 42-year-old female living with HIV on stable antiretroviral therap

The Implications of HIV Biomedical Prevention for Perceived HIV Risk and Psychosexual Health among Sexual Minority Men in the United States.

Sexual minority men (SMM) represent more than 50% of individuals living with HIV in the USA despite making up less than 5% of the general population. The advent of biomedical HIV prevention interventions has far-reaching benefits for SMM, potentially enhancing psychosexual health. We examined the relationship of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use and Undetectable = Untransmittable (U = U) belief to psychosexual health among HIV-negative/status-unknown SMM. Participants (n = 351) were recruited via hookup apps and social media to participate in an online survey study in 2019-2020. Participants

Modeling the effects of a Shock-and-Kill Treatment for HIV: Latency-Reversing Agents and Natural Killer Cells.

Despite the substantial success of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) in suppressing HIV replication, achieving a complete cure remains challenging due to the persistence of viral reservoirs. The use of latency-reversing agents (LRAs) combined with natural killer (NK) cells in a "shock-and-kill" strategy has been experimentally confirmed as an effective approach to reducing reservoirs. Here, we utilized an HIV infection mathematical model that incorporates both 'virus-cell' and 'cell-cell' infection modes to assess the dynamic synergy of ART, LRAs, and NK cells. Model calibration was per

Late diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and its associated factors in Asian countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread public health interventions and research on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), late diagnosis and presentation into care constitute serious challenges to effective prevention and control of the disease. Asia, the continent with the highest human population, accommodates a significant population of people living with HIV (PLWH), highlighting the need for effective prevention and control strategies. OBJECTIVES: This review aims to systematically analyze the prevalence and the trend of late HIV diagnosis, and the associated risk factors in the Asian region. METHO

A full-factorial randomized controlled trial of adjunct couples HIV testing and counseling components addressing drug use and communication skills among sexual minority male couples.

BACKGROUND: The past decade has seen increasing attention directed to the development of HIV prevention interventions for male couples, driven by epidemiological data indicating that main or primary - rather than causal - partnerships account for a substantial number of HIV infections in this population. Couples HIV testing and counseling (CHTC) has emerged as a standard of care in the US. This protocol describes a study that aims to evaluate the efficacy of two adjunct components to CHTC - communication training (CT) videos and a substance use module (SUM) - to reduce drug use and sexual HIV

Motivations for Reducing Other HIV Risk-Reduction Practices if Taking Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis: Findings from a Qualitative Study Among Women in Kenya and South Africa.

Findings from a survey conducted among women at high risk for HIV in Bondo, Kenya, and Pretoria, South Africa, demonstrated that a substantial proportion would be inclined to reduce their use of other HIV risk-reduction practices if they were taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). To explore the motivations for their anticipated behavior change, we conducted qualitative interviews with 60 women whose survey responses suggested they would be more likely to reduce condom use or have sex with a new partner if they were taking PrEP compared to if they were not taking PrEP. Three interrelated them

Antiretroviral drugs: critical issues and recent advances.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is now recognized as a chronic illness. Although the success of highly active antiretroviral therapy is beyond question, several issues still persist. Since the drugs cannot eradicate the virus, cure is not yet possible, and patients have to maintain a lifelong adherence with the risk of toxic effects, drug-drug interactions and drug resistance. A clear understanding of the viral replication and its interaction with host cell factors has led to the development of a large number of effective antiretroviral drugs (ARVs). New drugs in the existing clas

Relations between circumcision status, sexually transmitted infection history, and HIV serostatus among a national sample of men who have sex with men in the United States.

Circumcision's potential link to HIV/sexually transmitted infections (STI) has been at the center of recent global public health debates. However, data related to circumcision and sexual health remain limited, with most research focused on heterosexual men. This study sought to assess behavioral differences among a large sample of circumcised and noncircumcised men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States. Data were collected from 26,257 U.S. MSM through an online survey. Measures included circumcision status, health indicators, HIV/STI screening and diagnosis, sexual behaviors, and co

Neurocognitive deficits in HIV-positive patients-two case reports: Revising current AANTF guidelines in view of recent revelation of new neurocognitive symptoms.

Certain organic antecedents such as fever, weight loss, diarrhoea and systemic infections often present with neurocognitive deficits (NCDs). However, routine HIV screening is not done in such cases. HIV can present with psychiatric and neurocognitive symptoms as highlighted in the two cases given below.Case 1, a housewife, had been exhibiting altered behaviour following a low-grade fever over the past 3 weeks, associated with muttering to self, talking irrelevantly, would wander away from home, had decreased sleep, loss of appetite, and neglected self-care. She had displayed impulsivity by jum

Incidence and prevalence of herpes simplex virus type 2 infection in persons seeking repeat HIV counseling and testing.

BACKGROUND: Voluntary HIV testing sites provide an opportunity to identify and counsel persons with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection, thereby enhancing the prevention of HSV-2 and HIV infections. GOAL AND STUDY DESIGN: Using serologic specimens left over from HIV testing, we measured HSV-2 prevalence and incidence among persons who had repeatedly tested for HIV at anonymous counseling and testing sites in San Francisco during the period October 1997 through March 2000. RESULTS: The prevalence of HSV-2 infection was 23.5% (n = 987) overall, 28.7% among women, and 24.1% among men w

Evidence for a defect of antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxic (ADCC) effector function and anti-HIV gp120/41-specific ADCC-mediating antibody titres in HIV-infected individuals.

Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) is an important antiviral effector mechanism. However, its role, as well as the functional integrity of the ADCC-effector cells in HIV infections, is not well understood. For studying gp120/41-specific ADCC, we recently developed a virus-free target cell system, using a natural killer (NK) cell activity-resistant human lymphoid cell line of B lineage, which was transfected with the env gene of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1); gp120/41-expressing cell clones were thus selected. In this study, these gp120/41-expressing cloned cells

Papaverine hydrochloride: effects on HIV replication and T-lymphocyte cell function.

Papaverine hydrochloride (PAP) has previously been shown to have a potent inhibitory effect on the replication of viruses such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) and measles. In this report the effect of PAP on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication and T lymphocyte cell function were examined. MT4 cells infected with HIV strain 3b were incubated with serial dilutions of PAP (1-30 microM). At selected times postinfection HIV replication was measured by reverse transcriptase activity (RT) or HIV p24 Ag. PAP significantly inhibited HIV replication by more than 99% at doses of 30 microM with an CD5

Prevalence of acquired resistance to antiretrovirals in children and adolescents living with HIV under clinical follow-up at the Roosevelt Hospital in Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) monitoring in Central America has resulted in widespread circulation of HIV-strains with drug resistance mutations (DRM), compromising antiretroviral therapy (ART). This study aimed to assess the first HIVDR data and DRM patterns in the only HIV-infected pediatric population with resistance information in Guatemala. METHODS: All HIV-1 infected children and adolescents tested for HIVDR between 2013 and 2021 at Roosevelt Hospital (Guatemala) were retrospectively selected. Motivations to participate in a Phase I/II HIV vaccine trial: A descriptive study from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The search for an efficacious HIV vaccine is a global priority. To date only one HIV vaccine trial (RV144) has shown modest efficacy in a phase III trial. With existing different HIV-1 subtypes and frequent mutations, multiple trials are needed from different geographical sites particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where most HIV infections occur. Thus, motivations to participate in HIV vaccine trials among Tanzanians need to be assessed. This paper describes the motives of Police Officers who showed great interest to volunteer in HIVIS-03 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. METHODS: A descr

Molecular and cellular interactions of HIV-1/HTLV coinfection and impact on AIDS progression.

In the last 10 years HIV-1/human T-cell leukemia virus (HIV-1/HTLV) coinfection has emerged as a worldwide health problem. The numbers of HIV-1/HTLV-1 coinfections in South America and Africa are increasing, as well as HIV-1/HTLV-2 coinfections in the USA and Europe. Coinfections by either HTLV-1 or HTLV-2 and HIV-1 frequently occur in persons with a history of injection drug use. Since HTLV-1 preferentially infects CD4+ T-cells and HTLV-2 has a tropism for CD8+ T-cells, the influence of coinfection on HIV-1 disease progression may be different. The effect of HIV-1/HTLV-1 coinfection on HIV-I

Hypothesis links emergence of chloroquine-resistant malaria and other intracellular pathogens and suggests a new strategy for treatment of diseases caused by intracellular parasites.

Chloroquine and related anti-malarial drugs appear to promote apoptosis in T-cells by suppressing NF-kappa-B, which enhances the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins (e.g., Bcl-2). Thus, chloroquine has found applications in autoimmune diseases where it apparently facilitates apoptosis of abnormally persistent T-cell clones. The mode of action of chloroquine in prevention of malaria is not known, but it may be to minimize replication of the parasite in the liver cells, which occurs before invasion of the erythrocytes, by facilitating premature apoptosis of the infected host cells. After intro

The rise and fall of HIV in Kinshasa over a century.

Kinshasa was the crucible of the HIV pandemic, the only place on Earth where its path can be tracked over a century through history, demography, evolutionary biology, epidemiological studies, and population-based surveys. Altogether, these tools demonstrate that HIV is fading away from Kinshasa. Between HIV's arrival (≈1916) and the last survey (2023-2024), Kinshasa's population increased from 14 000 to 17 million inhabitants. After an exponential growth of persons with HIV (PWH) from the mid-1950s until 1988, this stalled between 1988 and 2013-2014. From 85 900 PWH in 2013-2014, this number d

An Adapted Friendship Bench Counseling Intervention (FB) to Improve Mental Health and HIV Care Engagement Outcomes Among People Living with HIV (PWH) Who Inject Drugs in Hanoi, Vietnam: Results from the VITAL Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

Common mental disorders (CMDs) are prevalent among people living with HIV (PWH) and cause morbidity, jeopardize HIV care engagement, and worsen HIV outcomes. In Vietnam, PWH who inject drugs are at high risk for poor HIV and CMD outcomes. However, few evidence-based interventions are available to address this population. We conducted a three-arm individually randomized pilot trial assigning 75 PWH with opiate use disorder and a CMD from methadone maintenance treatment clinics to either FB by a professional counselor, FB by a peer counselor, or enhanced usual care. Influence of families and other adult support on HIV prevention outcomes among black men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has consistently shown that the involvement of families plays a vital role in reducing risk behaviors, such as engaging in condomless sex, and promoting HIV prevention behaviors among young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM). With the aim of expanding the existing knowledge, this study aimed to examine the specific influence of families and other supportive adults in facilitating casual condom use, partner condom use, HIV testing, and preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) utilization among young Black MSM. METHODS: A sample of YBMSM aged 18-29 years (N = 400) was coll
