Recovery of intrathoracic and intraperitoneal blood and reinfusion by autotransfusion has been demonstrated to be safe and practical in selected cases. This study has basically aimed at using a very simple method for collection and reinfusion of blood in haemothorax and haemoperitoneum. AIMS: Spontaneous rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a life-threatening event, particularly in patients with associated cirrhosis. We present our experience of hepatic resection of ruptured HCC.
METHODS: We performed 199 resections of hepatocellular carcinoma between January 1984 and December 1999. Six (3%) of these patients were operated on as an emergency because of haemoperitoneum: in five the liver was cirrhotic.

Report on a case of acute vital complication of a conservatively treated lumbar vertebra fracture. Nine days after traumatic fracture of the first lumbar vertebra a 62-year old patient suddenly suffered from haemorrhagic shock caused by a minor rupture of the abdominal aorta. Before this dramatic event there were no symptoms pointing to this severe complication. Aetiology, diagnosis and therapy are discussed.

Autohemotransfusion was performed in 221 patients with intraperitoneal hemorrhage. The total amount of blood autotransfused was 198,760 ml, accounting for 90% of whole the blood transfused during the operations.
