[Clinical study of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism].

Clinical study of eight cases of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism was performed. These cases consisted of five prepubertal cases and three postpubertal cases induced by prolactin-producing hypophyseal tumor. The former five cases had the chief complaints of incomplete development of their external genitalia. The chief complaints in three postpubertal cases were decreased libido in two and infertility in one. The average testicular volumes were 7.8 ml and 20 ml in prepubertal and postpubertal cases, respectively. The basal levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) were within the normal limit in most cas

Clinical and experimental investigations of vasopressin secretion in acute porphyrias.

In 41 patients suffering from acute hepatic porphyrias the arginin-vasopressin (AVP) levels in their urine were measured by RIA. In 6 patients, AVP secretion was normal; in 8 cases AVP levels were significantly elevated, while 27 cases showed decreased levels of AVP (p less than 0.001). A linear correlation between AVP secretion and urine volume was not found. In animal experiments, 20 rats were treated with delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), (1.5 mmol/kg/24 h and 1.5 mmol/kg/48 h) for 4 weeks. Afterwards vasopressin production in the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system was analysed by the immunopero

Ethanol inhibition of pituitary-thyroid axis: an effect secondary to nutritional deficiency.

Ethanol as either 20% or 36% of total calories in a Lieber diet was administered to male rats. At these concentrations, ethanol consumption relative to body weight did not differ. Pair-fed controls were restricted to the amount of calories consumed by rats given ethanol. Under these conditions, a direct effect of ethanol on the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-thyroid axis could not be demonstrated. There were no differences between pair-fed control and ethanol treated rats in serum or pituitary TSH, TSH response to TRH, or T4 and T3 levels. On the other hand, in rats given ethanol as 36% of total cal

Hormonal control of hamster ear sebaceous gland lipogenesis.

The sites and hormonal control of lipogenesis in hamster ear sebaceous glands are reported. Sebaceous lipogenesis was determined in ear biopsies by incubation with glucose and tracer concentrations of 14C-acetate in buffer. The 14C-labeled lipids were saponified, extracted, and determined by liquid scintillation counting. Histologically, the ears contained many sebaceous glands. The glands of male animals were much larger and more heavily lipid-stained than glands from females. Lipogenesis was almost entirely confined to the sebaceous glands in the dermal stroma. Lipogenesis was considerably h

Role of hypothalamic circuitries in neuroendocrine regulations: hypothalamus - endocrine pancreas interactions, a new concept.

Though there is no lack in proofs of hypothalamic involvement in regulating endocrine pancreas and related aspects of metabolism, the mechanisms thereof are still pending elucidation. There is no adequate tropic hormone in the anterior pituitary hence the conventional hypothalamic-hypophyseal route may only function as circuitous. This lends special appeal to a probable hypothalamic participation over purely neural route, one implicated in insulin secretion, for example via the vagus. This has long been considered possible but has not been explored. Summed up are results of many years of exper

[Hormonal multiplicity of an apudoma of the lung and pancreas. Characterization of the different peptides in the tumoral extracts (author's transl)].

The capacity which the cells of some tumors have of synthesizing, storing, and releasing hormonal polypetides constitutes the basic characteristic of the neoplasms of the APUD system. On many occasions these polypeptides are released as hormonal precursors of high molecular weight, with a minimal biological action in comparison with the real hormone (big ACTH, big gastrin, etc.), and they have no clinical expressivity. On other occasions they reproduce, however, the clinical syndrome of the hormone released in excess. The production of multiple hormones by a single tumor is not a common event.

Brain-organ axis: How does stress regulate peripheral immunity through neural signaling?

External stimuli elicit behavioral responses through neural circuits, and growing evidence demonstrates that this regulatory process is closely associated with the immune system. The complex interplay between stress and immunity, as highlighted by recent interdisciplinary studies, is central to this relationship, highlighting the bidirectional communication between the nervous system and multiple peripheral organ systems. To better elucidate how the brain responds to external stressors, we propose the concept of the "brain-organ axis." Analogous to coordinated teamwork, this framework emphasiz

Indications that the direct effects of supplemented vitamin D3 on the adrenal cortex are of secondary importance for glucocorticoid output.

Vitamin D3 supplementation is beneficial for various symptoms of aging and may stabilize hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function. Systemic and local metabolic activation of vitamin D3 are essential for its acquisition of physiological activity and subsequent direct action. We reasonably believe that the direct effect of the active metabolite of vitamin D3 on the adrenal cortex is of secondary importance for glucocorticoid output, compared to the indirect, pituitary-mediated mechanism of its action. The initially decreased blood level of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), after the

Signal Amplification in the HPT Axis-Evidence for Its Existence, Location, Significance, and Molecular Mechanisms.

Thyroid hormones (THs) are under negative feedback regulation via the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. How this axis operates to keep the circulating THs within a narrow physiological range is not well understood quantitatively. Led by the design principle of robust homeostatic feedback control, here we review and synthesize the literature under a unifying theme of signal amplification in the HPT axis, providing evidence for its existence, location, functional significance, and potential molecular mechanisms. Drawing on human studies of the circulating TSH-T4 relationship, we assert

Underwater Noise Induces Cognitive Impairments in Resource-Directed Exploratory Behaviors in Black Rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii) via Disruption of the Microbiota-Gut-Brain and Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Interrenal Axes.

The unprecedented expansion of human activities has led to increasing global underwater noise pollution, but its effects on fish behavior and cognition, which are fundamental for learning, decision-making, and survival, as well as the underlying physiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we exposed juvenile black rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii) to four noise levels for 50 days. The results showed that medium and high noise levels (110 and 130 dB re 1 μPa root mean square (RMS)) significantly impaired growth and induced learning and memory-related deficits in T-maze tests, as evide

Oxytocin as regulator of stress and inflammation in aging.

Chronic stress and inflammation are potent determinants of negative health trajectories across adulthood, contributing to the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. In aging, these processes become increasingly intertwined, forming a feedforward loop in which chronic stress activates pro-inflammatory cascades in the brain and body, while pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulate stress-response pathways. Together, these interactions accelerate neuronal vulnerability, cognitive decline, and even Alzheimer's disease and Related Dementia (ADRD) pathology. The neuropeptide oxytocin (OT), a modulato

Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms Linking Mood Disorders, HPA Axis Dysregulation, and Neurocognitive Inflammation to Perioperative Neurocognitive Disorders.

Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) encompass a spectrum of cognitive impairments occurring across the surgical period and are associated with significant morbidity, delayed recovery, and reduced quality of life. Although established risk factors include advanced age, cardiovascular disease, and preexisting cognitive impairment, the contribution of mood disorders to PND susceptibility remains incompletely understood. This review systematically examines the neurobiological overlap between mood disorders, particularly major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder, and PND, with e

Sleep and circadian disruption reshape immune homeostasis in oral tissues: mechanistic roles of melatonin and cortisol in periodontal disease and xerostomia.

Sleep disturbance has emerged as a major modifier of immune homeostasis in chronic inflammatory diseases, yet its immunological relevance to oral tissues remains incompletely integrated. Accumulating evidence indicates that sleep and oral inflammatory diseases are linked through coordinated neuroendocrine-immune pathways, with melatonin and cortisol constituting a central circadian hormonal axis that shapes immune balance. Melatonin, predominantly secreted during the nocturnal phase, exerts antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects that support periodontal immune homeostasis

Transcriptomics identified crucial candidate genes and pathways regulating early testicular development of drakes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal/thyroid axes.

BACKGROUND: The crosstalk between the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) and hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axes plays an important role in gonadal development. However, the mechanism by which these 2 axes regulate early testicular development in drakes remains largely unknown. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to compare the morphology, histology, and transcriptomics between the precocious puberty (PP) and delayed puberty (DP) Longyan Shan-ma drakes (Anas platyrhynchos) to preliminarily reveal the mechanisms regulating early testicular development. RESULT: The histomorpholo

Natural Herbal Compounds Exerting an Antidepressant Effect through Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal Axis Regulation.

Depression is a common mental illness that damages the life and health of patients and causes economic burden, and HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis dysfunction is considered to be one of the important factors leading to depression. In this case, it is essential to explore possible treatment methods by using natural compounds with HPA axis regulating and antidepressant effects. However, no one has reviewed it so far. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to systematically sort out the related natural products that play an antidepressant role by regulating the function of the HPA axi

Critical biological systems linking early-life stress to later-life outcomes: A systematic review of animal models.

Adverse and stressful early life events can impact on later-life cognitive, physiological and neurological outcomes, but direct mechanisms through which these so-called "programming effects" occur are still under investigation. In this review, we systematically examine early-life stress (ELS) paradigms in non-human animals, focusing on three key biological systems: the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, immune system and oxytocinergic system. We developed a ranking system to assess and compare stress severity across different ELS paradigms. We also consider how different theoretical fr

Models developed to explain the effects of stress on brain and behavior.

There is an integral relationship between stress, brain function and behavior. Over the year's extensive research has led to the development of various models to explain the intricate intersection between brain and stress. This chapter delves into some of the theoretical frameworks that explains the neurobiological and behavioral responses to stress using key models of stress such as the allostatic load model, which is the most common model that describes how chronic stress affect brain structure and function resulting in long-term changes in regions such as the hippocampus, amygdala, and pref

Sirtuin 3, a mitochondrial metabolic enzyme, links the mitochondrial function to neurophysiology in depression.

Depression, characterized by sustained low moods and even suicidal tendencies, has been intimately linked with mitochondrial dysfunction. This dysfunction is significantly connected with various psychiatric disorders, suggesting its potential role in the pathogenesis and progression of depression. Sirtuin 3 (SIRT3), a potent deacetylase enzyme primarily located within mitochondria, orchestrates mitochondrial function and mitigates various dysfunctions, e.g., insufficient cellular energy supply and oxidative stress. Insufficient cellular energy supply and oxidative stress disrupt normal neuropl
