Impulsive aggression in personality disorder correlates with platelet 5-HT2A receptor binding.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between platelet 5-HT2A receptor binding and aggressive behavior. 125I-LSD Bmax and Kd values were measured for 22 subjects meeting DMS-III-R criteria for one or more personality disorders and 12 healthy volunteer subjects. Aggression and impulsivity were assessed using the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI) Assault scale, Life History of Aggression (LHA) scale, and the Barratt-11 Impulsiveness scale (BIS-11). Bmax and Kd values did not differ between personality disordered subjects and healthy volunteers. However, both Bmax and Kd

Quantitative genetic analysis of injury liability in infants and toddlers.

A threshold model of latent liability was applied to infant and toddler twin data on total count of injuries sustained during the interval from birth to 36 months of age. A quantitative genetic analysis of estimated twin correlations in injury liability indicated strong genetic dominance effects, but no additive genetic variance was detected. Because interpretations involving overdominance have little research support, the results may be due to low order epistasis or other interaction effects. Boys had more injuries than girls, but this effect was found only for groups whose parents were promp

Criminality and Sexual Behaviours in Substance Dependents Seeking Treatment.

The aim of this study was to investigate the link between violence, crime, and sexual behavior among patients with substance-related disorder admitted to a specialized inpatient care unit. This was a cross-sectional study using a questionnaire on socio-demographic characteristics, drug of choice (DOC), questions about sexual behavior, and instruments to evaluate the severity of dependence (SADD, DAST, FTND), level of impulsivity (BIS-11), and a screening sex addiction scale. The sample consisted of 587 adult subjects, of which 82.3% were men, 66.4% had used cocaine (sniffed and smoked) as thei

Update on pathological skin picking.

Pathological skin picking (PSP) is a disabling disorder characterized by repetitive picking of the skin that causes tissue damage. Estimated to affect 2% to 5.4% of the population, PSP is currently listed as an impulse control disorder not otherwise specified. However, the repetitive and compulsive behaviors seen in PSP are phenomenologically and clinically similar to the behaviors seen in obsessive-compulsive disorder and other body-focused repetitive behaviors, such as trichotillomania and pathological nail biting. Animal neuroimaging research in related disorders such as obsessive-compulsiv

Alcohol effects on simulated driving performance and self-perceptions of impairment in DUI offenders.

Drivers with a history of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol self-report heightened impulsivity and display reckless driving behaviors as indicated by increased rates of vehicle crashes, moving violations, and traffic tickets. Such poor behavioral self-regulation could also increase sensitivity to the disruptive effects of alcohol on driving performance. The present study examined the degree to which DUI drivers display an increased sensitivity to the acute impairing effects of alcohol on simulated driving performance and overestimate their driving fitness following alcohol consumpti

Subthalamic deep brain stimulation and impulse control in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Experimental studies suggest that deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) induces impulsivity in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The purpose of this study was to assess various measures of impulse control in PD patients with STN DBS in comparison to patients receiving medical therapy. METHODS: In a cross-sectional evaluation, 53 consecutively eligible patients were assessed for impulsivity with the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, for impulse control disorders (ICDs) using the Minnesota Impulsive Disorders Interview, and for obsessive-compulsi

Two different types of obsession: autogenous obsessions and reactive obsessions.

We propose that obsessions are categorized into two subtypes, i.e. autogenous obsessions and reactive obsessions, which are different in terms of identifiability of their evoking stimuli, subjective experiences, contents, and subsequent cognitive processes. Autogenous obsessions tend to come abruptly into consciousness without identifiable evoking stimuli, which are perceived as ego-dystonic and aversive enough to be repelled, and include sexual, aggressive, and immoral thoughts or impulses. On the other hand, reactive obsessions are evoked by identifiable external stimuli, which are perceived

HIV-1 seropositivity and eating disorders: a case report.

We report a case of bulimia nervosa in a 21-year-old HIV-positive woman whose seropositivity provoked sustained motivation for recovery from her eating disorder. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of HIV-1 seropositivity leading to a clinical improvement in an eating disorder. We review the literature, in which the negative impact of seropositivity has been emphasized, and we explore the complex interaction between eating disorders and HIV-1 infection, considering both nutritional and psychological factors.

Relationship of delay aversion and response inhibition to extinction learning, aggression, and sexual behaviour.

Impulsivity is an important symptom of many psychiatric disorders, and can be divided into two subtypes: response inhibition deficits and delay aversion. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between delay aversion and response inhibition, both to each other and to locomotion, extinction of conditioned responses, sexual behaviour, and aggressive behaviour. To that end, we quantified the behaviour of 24 rats in several tests. To measure response inhibition, rats were trained in a stop-signal task. In this operant task, rats were rewarded food if they inhibited execution of a re

The Neurobehavioral Profile of Phelan-McDermid Syndrome: Suggestions for Assessment Tools in Light of the 2023 Consensus Guidelines.

OBJECTIVES AND BACKGROUND: Individuals with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome (PMS) present with a variety of symptoms, including a breadth of behavioral issues. Clinically assessing behavior in PMS remains challenging due to the overabundance of behavioral assessments and the lack of tools validated explicitly for use in individuals with intellectual disability (ID) and neurodevelopmental disorders. This review sought to suggest which assessment tools would best clinically assess behavior in individuals with PMS. METHODS: Validated behavioral assessment tools were identified using a systematic search

Pathological Gambling: Biological and Clinical Considerations.

Pathological gambling (PG) is categorized as an impulse control disorder (ICD). Phenomenological, neurobiological and pharmacological data suggest similarities in the pathophysiologies of substance use disorders (SUDs) and PG. Both behavioral and pharmacological approaches, including those that have been empirically validated for SUDs, have shown promise in the treatment of PG. Findings from biological studies of PG are reviewed, and treatment approaches based on controlled studies are summarized.

Modifying reaction time tasks parameters in the automated IntelliCage identifies heightened impulsivity and impaired attention in the 3xTg-AD model of Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: The 3xTg-AD transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an important tool to investigate the relationship between development of pathological amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau, neuroinflammation, and cognitive impairments. Traditional behavioral tasks assessing aspects of learning and memory, such as mazes requiring spatial navigation, unfortunately suffer from several shortcomings, including the stress of human handling and not probing species-typical behavior. The automated IntelliCage system was developed to circumvent such issues by testing mice in a social environment while mea

Neurotransmitter and imaging studies in anorexia nervosa: new targets for treatment.

Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa are disorders of unknown etiology that invariably begin during adolescence and near in time to puberty in young women. These disorders are associated with aberrant eating behaviors, body image distortions, impulse and mood disturbances, as well as characteristic temperament and personality traits. It is well known that malnutrition produces changes in neuroendocrine function. More recently, disturbances in neuronal systems have been found to play a role in the modulation of feeding, mood, and impulse control. These neuronal systems include neuropeptides (CRH, opioi

Relationships Between Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome, Impulsivity, and Emotion Regulation Among Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS) is associated with internalizing symptoms, emotion regulation (ER) difficulties, daytime sleepiness, and impulsivity; however, their interrelations in adolescents with subthreshold attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remain underexamined. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between CDS, ADHD symptoms, ER problems, daytime sleepiness, trait impulsivity, and internalizing symptoms and to determine the mediating roles of ER problems and daytime sleepiness. METHODS: This cross-sectional, clinic-based study included 144 treat

The Spanish Short Dark Tetrad (SD4): Association With Personality and Psychological Problems.

BACKGROUND: The Short Dark Tetrad (SD4) is a recently developed instrument for assessing the "dark" personality traits of psychopathy, narcissism, Machiavellianism, and sadism. We aimed to examine the SD4's psychometric properties, adapting it into Spanish and exploring its structure, gender invariance, reliability, concurrent validity, and nomological network. METHOD: A sample of 668 adults (Mage = 26.36, SD = 10.64, 69.2% females) completed the SD4 and other self-report questionnaires. RESULTS: The results demonstrated sound indices of reliability and concurrent validity, an adequate four-

Impaired impulse inhibition of emotional stimuli in patients with borderline personality disorder.

This study was aimed to investigate whether BPD patients showed impaired impulse inhibition of emotional and non-emotional stimuli and to explore relevant neuroelectrophysiological mechanisms. A total of 32 BPD patients and 32 matched healthy controls were recruited. Self-reported scales were used to measure psychiatric symptoms. The event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded when subjects were performing neutral and emotional Stop Signal Task (SST). Group differences in self-reported scores, behavioral variables and ERPs were compared. The BPD group scored significantly higher on impulsivi

Reversal Learning Performance in the XY∗ Mouse Model of Klinefelter and Turner Syndromes.

Klinefelter syndrome (KS; 47, XXY) and Turner syndrome (TS; 45, XO) are caused by two relatively common sex chromosome aneuploidies. These conditions are associated with an increased odds of neuropsychiatric disorders, including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as impairments in cognition that include learning delays, attentional dysfunction and impulsivity. We studied cognitive functions in the XY∗ mouse model, which allows comparison of XXY to XY males (KS model), and XO to XX females (TS model). We evaluated adult mice with and without gonads, using a version of an o
