Review on Main Arboviruses Circulating on French Guiana, An Ultra-Peripheric European Region in South America.

French Guiana (FG), a French overseas territory in South America, is susceptible to tropical diseases, including arboviruses. The tropical climate supports the proliferation and establishment of vectors, making it difficult to control transmission. In the last ten years, FG has experienced large outbreaks of imported arboviruses such as Chikungunya and Zika, as well as endemic arboviruses such as dengue, Yellow fever, and Oropouche virus. Epidemiological surveillance is challenging due to the differing distributions and behaviors of vectors. This article aims to summarize the current knowledge

Behavioral fingerprints predict insecticide and anthelmintic mode of action.

Novel invertebrate-killing compounds are required in agriculture and medicine to overcome resistance to existing treatments. Because insecticides and anthelmintics are discovered in phenotypic screens, a crucial step in the discovery process is determining the mode of action of hits. Visible whole-organism symptoms are combined with molecular and physiological data to determine mode of action. However, manual symptomology is laborious and requires symptoms that are strong enough to see by eye. Here, we use high-throughput imaging and quantitative phenotyping to measure Caenorhabditis elegans b

A systematic review of synthetic tyrosinase inhibitors and their structure-activity relationship.

Tyrosinase is a copper-containing oxidation enzyme, which is responsible for the production of melanin. This enzyme is widely distributed in microorganisms, animals and plants, and plays an essential role in undesirable browning of fruits and vegetables, antibiotic resistance, skin pigment formation, sclerotization of cuticle, neurodegeneration, etc. Hence, it has been recognized as a therapeutic target for the development of antibrowning agents, antibacterial agents, skin-whitening agents, insecticides, and other therapeutic agents. With great potential application in food, agricultural, cosm

The history of 20th century malaria control in Peru.

Malaria has been part of Peruvian life since at least the 1500s. While Peru gave the world quinine, one of the first treatments for malaria, its history is pockmarked with endemic malaria and occasional epidemics. In this review, major increases in Peruvian malaria incidence over the past hundred years are described, as well as the human factors that have facilitated these events, and concerted private and governmental efforts to control malaria. Political support for malaria control has varied and unexpected events like vector and parasite resistance have adversely impacted morbidity and mort

[Prevention of malaria in the adult].

Great scourge of poor countries, malaria is the most important tropical parasitic disease. It is responsible for a large number of deaths in concerned countries and represents a real danger for travellers going to endemic regions. So, prophylactic measures are essential. On the one hand protective measures against mosquito bites, by wearing covering clothes, by using repellents and bed net (eventually impregnated with insecticide) will be useful. On the other hand, chemoprophylaxis is most often necessary, adapted to the possibility of chloroquine resistant P. falciparum, to the length or cond

Induction by alkaloids and phenobarbital of Family 4 Cytochrome P450s in Drosophila: evidence for involvement in host plant utilization.

In vertebrates, cytochrome P450s of the CYP2 and CYP3 families play a dominant role in drug metabolism, while in insects members of the CYP6 and CYP28 families have been implicated in metabolism of insecticides and toxic natural plant compounds. A degenerate 3' RACE strategy resulted in the identification of fifteen novel P450s from an alkaloid-resistant species of Drosophila. The strong (17.4-fold) and highly specific induction of a single gene (CYP4D10) by the toxic isoquinoline alkaloids of a commonly utilized host-plant (saguaro cactus) provides the first indication that members of the CYP

Resurgence of malaria in Bombay (Mumbai) in the 1990s: a historical perspective.

Bombay has achieved extraordinary success in controlling its malaria problem for nearly six decades by relying primarily on legislative measures and non-insecticidal methods of mosquito abatement. In 1992, however, malaria reemerged in Bombay with a vengeance. During 1992-1997, the city witnessed a manifold increase in the number of malaria cases diagnosed and treated by the public health system. The large number of malaria patients treated by private practitioners was not recorded by the municipal malaria surveillance system during this period. In 1995, at the peak of the resurgence, public h

Toxicity and flushing activity of 5 botanical and essential oil formulations against Blattella germanica (L.) (Blattodea: Ectobiidae).

This study assessed the toxicity and flushing activity of 5 commercially available botanical and essential oil formulations against 3 strains of German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.) (Blattodea: Ectobiidae): a susceptible laboratory strain (S) and 2 insecticide-resistant field strains (D and E). Three bioassays were conducted: continuous exposure to dry residues, direct spray application, and flushing. The direct spray assay yielded the fastest kill, with a median survival time (MST) of 1 min when strain S was exposed to Essentria at the high label rate, likely due to rapid dermal and spi

Acid-triggered degradation of a silicon-based nanopesticide activates SA-dependent conifer defense against Dioryctria sylvestrella.

Pine forests in northern China are heavily infested by wood-boring insects, the cryptic life cycles of which make conventional control measures ineffective. We addressed this threat with Sp@SNP, a silicon-based nanopesticide synthesized by polymerization of silane monomers, in which spirotetramat (Sp) was physically entrapped at a loading of 19.92%. The resulting 118-nm nanoparticles showed exceptional water dispersibility, rapid plant uptake, and excellent penetration into the insect cuticle. Sp@SNP selectively released its active ingredient, spirotetramat, in an acid-triggered manner, wherea

Enabling technologies to improve area-wide integrated pest management programmes for the control of screwworms.

The economic devastation caused in the past by the New World screwworm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) to the livestock industry in the U.S.A., Mexico and the rest of Central America was staggering. The eradication of this major livestock pest from North and Central America using the sterile insect technique (SIT) as part of an area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) programme was a phenomenal technical and managerial accomplishment with enormous economic implications. The area is maintained screwworm-free by the weekly release of 40 million sterile flies

Pharmacotherapy of ectoparasitic infections.

Epizoonoses such as scabies, lice and cimicosis are common, vexing disorders that occur worldwide. Historically, many treatment modalities have been employed in the management of these disorders, and most of the drugs described in this review are of historical interest and no longer recommended or in widespread use because of their wide spectrum of adverse effects. More recently, reports documenting resistance against various antiectoparasite drugs, complicated and severe courses of the diseases, and adverse effects of drug therapy have prompted the development of new treatment strategies and

The in vitro antibacterial effect of permethrin and formaldehyde on Staphylococcus aureus.

Antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus are a threat to human health, and effective treatment options against them are needed. This study aimed to determine whether the insecticide permethrin was capable of inhibiting the growth of S. aureus or if some other component of a permethrin cream was responsible for a decrease in scabies associated bacterial infection previously observed. Ten S. aureus strains were grown in the presence of permethrin and formaldehyde both alone and in combination with percent inhibition determined by viable counts.

Ageritin, a Ribotoxin from Poplar Mushroom ( Agrocybe aegerita) with Defensive and Antiproliferative Activities.

Ribotoxins make up a group of extracellular rRNA endoribonucleases produced by ascomycetes that display cytotoxicity toward animal cells, having been proposed as insecticidal agents. Recently, the ribotoxin Ageritin has been isolated from the basidiomycetes Agrocybe aegerita (poplar mushroom), suggesting that ribotoxins are widely distributed among fungi. To gain insights into the protective properties of Ageritin against pathogens and its putative biotechnological applications, we have tested several biological activities of Ageritin, comparing them with those of the well-known ribotoxin α-sa

Optimized Malaria-antigens delivered by immunostimulating reconstituted influenza virosomes.

Malaria remains a serious cause of morbidity and mortality in millions of individuals each year. The development of widespread resistance of the parasite to drugs as well as resistance of the transmitting mosquito-vector to insecticides in combination with the poor economic situation of many malaria-endemic countries make the development of an effective and inexpensive treatment and prevention a main focus of research. Vaccines remain to be one of the most cost effective and feasible means of disease control and have remarkable success in the control of many infectious disease: eradication of

Evaluation of mycoparasitic Trichoderma atroviride and entomopathogenic Aspergillus niger as potential bioinsecticides against the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past three decades, dengue disease incidence has significantly increased worldwide, creating serious public health concerns. The principal mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti, exhibits resistance to commonly used insecticides, reducing the efficacy of vector control measures. Thus, the necessity for alternate strategies is critical. Using bioinsecticides such as entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) is one such strategy. This study details the evaluation of mycoparasitic Trichoderma atroviride and entomopathogenic Aspergillus niger against pyrethroid-resistant and pyrethroid-susceptib

Role of Lectin in the Response of Aedes aegypti Against Bt Toxin.

Aedes aegypti is one of the world's most dangerous mosquitoes, and a vector of diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya virus, yellow fever, and Zika virus disease. Currently, a major global challenge is the scarcity of antiviral medicine and vaccine for arboviruses. Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis (Bti) toxins are used as biological mosquito control agents. Endotoxins, including Cry4Aa, Cry4Ba, Cry10Aa, Cry11Aa, and Cyt1Aa, are toxic to mosquitoes. Insect eradication by Cry toxin relies primarily on the interaction of cry toxins with key toxin receptors, such as aminopeptidase (APN),

Assessment of the lethal and sublethal effects by spinetoram on cotton bollworm.

Helicoverpa armigera is an universal pest around the world, which has recovered again in recent years because of the adjustment of cropping structure and resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) in China. As a new insecticide spinetoram is extensively used to control many pest insects, including H. armigera. However the lethal and sublethal effects of spinetoram on cotton bollworm have not been assessed. In the present study, the toxicity of spinetoram against cotton bollworm was tested under laboratory conditions. Results demonstrated spinetoram showed an excellent activity against H. armige

Tackling the malaria problem in the South-East Asia Region: need for a change in policy?

Malaria is largely neglected in the South-East Asia Region (SEAR), although it has the highest number of people susceptible to the disease. Malaria in the SEAR exhibits special epidemiological characteristics such as "forest malaria" and malaria due to migration across international borders. The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) has been a focal-point for the emergence of drug resistant malaria. With the recent emergence of artemisinin resistance, coupled with the limited availability of insecticides, malaria control efforts in the SEAR face a steep challenge. Indirect man-made factors such as cl
