The effect of social settings and olfactory environments on spontaneous movement synchrony.

Interpersonal synchrony refers to the temporal coordination between two individuals, signaling the coupling of their behaviors. Optimal movement synchrony in dyads is linked to more affiliative behavior, cooperation, and trust. However, there is limited research on how the sensory environment impacts interpersonal synchrony. One significant environmental factor influencing human behavior and social interactions is ambient odors. This study aimed to examine the effect of ambient odor on interpersonal synchrony, particularly in-phase movement synchrony. Motion energy analysis and windowed cross-

Promoting Physical Activity and Peer Relationships in Adolescent Girls Through a Summer Program.

Peer interactions and influence affect adolescent physical activity (PA) and mental health. Social emotional learning (SEL) can be key to adolescent development and well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the ripple effects and preliminary effectiveness of EmpowerHER, an integrated PA and SEL pilot intervention, on changes in adolescent girls' PA levels and friendship networks during an 8-week summer care program. Adolescents (n=47, ages 10-14 years) wore accelerometers to measure PA and completed surveys on psychological distress, social connectedness, and friendship nominations at the start

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples and the Interpersonal Victimization Experiences of Indigenous Peoples: A Strengths-Based Focus on Resilience.

This study draws upon original survey (n = 95) and interview (n = 16) data with mostly female Indigenous Peoples attending college to identify protective factors associated with resilience in the aftermath of interpersonal victimization and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP). Many participants experienced at least one form of victimization (82%), nearly all (94%) were aware of MMIP, and the majority had personally known a friend, family, or community member who had gone missing or been murdered (85%). Interview results revealed that MMIP had serious psychological and social impacts

What Do We Think of Shy Adults? Influence of One's Own Shyness and Sociability.

OBJECTIVE: Shyness is a ubiquitous personality characteristic present across historical time and cultures. Yet, little is known about perceptions of shy adults in Western society. We examined emerging adults' perceptions of shy and sociable women and whether one's own personality influenced their perceptions. METHOD: Participants (N = 301, Mage = 19.07 years) were randomized to read a vignette describing either a prototypical shy woman or a prototypical sociable woman and rated their perceptions of the woman in the vignette on various qualities. Participants' shyness and sociability were self

Youth's sense of belonging and associated risk and promotive factors: An ecological systems network analysis.

IntroductionBelonging is a powerful predictor of positive outcomes in youth, including greater well-being. There remains a pressing need to integrate influences across layers of organization within youths' developmental contexts to further understand how to enhance belonging amongst this demographic. Here, we investigate: (1) "How do risk and promotive factors converge in relation to belonging among youth?" and (2) "Do risk and promotive factors associate differently with belonging between boys and girls?".MethodsResponses from a community-based questionnaire were analyzed to establish ecologi

The Invisible Abuser: Attachment, Victimization, and Perpetrator Perception in Repeat Abuse.

Current models of trauma bonding often understate the perpetrator's role in shaping victims' emotional attachment, risking both victim-blaming and conceptual distortion. This study addresses that gap through interviews with 18 women who experienced repeat domestic abuse and sustained attachment to their perpetrators. The analysis identifies attachment weaponisation as a core mechanism of coercive control. Through grooming, trauma-sharing, and alternating cruelty with care, abusers deliberately manufacture emotional entrapment. These cycles don't merely mimic intimacy - they weaponise it, turni

The Impact of Individual and Context-Related Factors on Students' Reactions After Sexual Assault: A Vignette Study.

University students are often victims of sexual assault (SA) with a wide range of severity, but they are the least likely to disclose the assault or to take any concrete (legal) steps against the perpetrator. Prior work reported 13 main factors that influence university students' choice of reaction post-assault: (a) Fear of personal consequences, (b) distrust in authorities, (c) downplay of assault severity, (d) psychological factors, (e) situational factors, (f) lack of evidence, (g) emotional factors, (h) fear of interpersonal consequences, (i) social factors, (j) giving a benefit of doubt,

Influential Factors for Disclosing a Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Diagnosis to Romantic Partners.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic condition characterized by multiorgan tumor predisposition. Owing to the variability, heritability, and severity of the condition, individuals with TSC may face psychosocial challenges within romantic relationships including disclosing their diagnosis to romantic partners. Despite disclosure being explored in other genetic conditions, this area has not yet been explored in the TSC community, which faces unique challenges in overall health and quality of life. METHODS: This study surveyed independent adults with TSC regarding demographi

Oral Sex May Serve as Low Mate Value Compensation Among Men: Evidence from a Pre-registered Study.

From the evolutionary perspective, maintaining a committed relationship is beneficial for reproductive success but involves risks such as losing a partner or infidelity. People typically prefer partners with similar mate value (MV) to avoid rejection. However, when a mate value discrepancy (MVD) arises, the partner with lower MV might employ mate retention strategies to maintain the relationship. This study investigated whether men with lower MV compared to their female partners used cunnilingus more often and whether this effect was mediated by their motivation to satisfy the partner. Additio

Dating in social anxiety disorder: A daily diary study.

Romantic relationships are vital for health, well-being and quality of life, and an increasing percentage of romantic relations begin via use of dating apps and subsequently progress to dates. In the present study we examined dating application use and dates among individuals with SAD (n = 54) and without SAD (n = 54). Our sample included young adults (age range 18 to 33) who were not in a romantic relationship at the time of the study. For both individuals with SAD and without SAD, half of the participants were men, and half were women. We used a daily diary measurement in which participants

Chronicity of Violence Foretold: Toward an Integrated Theory of Intimate Partner Violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a worldwide social problem. The current study explores underlining mechanisms of phenomenon by tying together intergenerational transmission theory, socialization theory, and trauma theory. It learns from men how the father figure shaped by their childhood experiences has contributed to their violence, how the father's socialization to manhood has affected their intimate relations, and how they understand the effect of being exposed to the father's violence on their own intimate relationships and violence. Interviews with 25 Israeli men were analyzed thematic

Interpersonal Abortion Conversations: Communication Characteristics Post-Roe.

Abortion is a politicized and stigmatized health procedure that has received considerable attention in popular discourse in the past year. The present study investigated how often people (N = 235) talk about abortion throughout their lifespan and within the past 12 months, with whom they have these conversations, and which conversations were most memorable. Key findings from the present study, framed through the Theory of Memorable Messages and the Social Ecological Model, include that most participants had at least one conversation about abortion in the past 12 months. Within the past 12 mont

"I have to charge my social battery": Perspectives from autistic young adults on Quality of Life.

In this study we have asked a group of autistic young adults to describe what is important for their quality of life. The 14 participants (aged 21-29 years) were recruited from a 10-year follow-up study of autistic people. During interviews, our participants described the importance of having relationships with family, friends and pets. Having meaningful activities and being able to immerse themselves in particular interests was also reported to be important for a good quality of life. Interests had also guided their choice of what to study and what to do for work. They also spoke of how commu

Trusting information from friends: Adults expect it but preschoolers do not.

As adults, we might understand that beliefs often spread because people are strongly influenced by their friends, family, and other social connections. However, do we think those influences are strong enough to overrule direct evidence of a friend's unreliability? And do preschoolers expect people to show such biases toward friends and to privilege friendship over reliability? Across three experiments, we explored whether friendship influences the evaluations of trust when others learn labels for novel objects as well as personal opinions. After watching scenes involving a main character, her

Is Seeing Believing? Hallmark Movie Viewership and Relationship Beliefs.

The Hallmark Channel, a highly watched cable network, is known for its consistently idealistic portrayals of romantic relationships. Despite its popularity, no research has examined whether increased viewership of Hallmark movies covaries with endorsement of relationship beliefs. According to cultivation theory, what we watch impacts our beliefs and perceptions of reality. Additionally, the Differential Susceptibility to Media Effects Model (DSMM) proposes that certain variables, such as developmental (i.e., age, relationship length) and dispositional factors (e.g., attachment style, gender),

Friend Emotional Support and Dynamics of Adolescent Socioemotional Problems.

Emotional support from friends is a crucial source of social support for adolescents, significantly influencing their psychological development. However, previous research has primarily focused on how this support correlates with general levels of socioemotional problems among adolescents, neglecting the significance of daily fluctuations in these problems. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between friend emotional support and both the average and dynamic indicators of daily emotional and peer problems in adolescents. These dynamic indicators include within-domain dynamics-

Anxiety about the social consequences of missed group experiences intensifies fear of missing out (FOMO).

Although fear of missing out (FOMO) has become a widely experienced phenomenon, the specific social situations and cognitions driving the FOMO experience have not yet been closely studied. Across seven experiments (N = 5,441), we find that FOMO occurs when people miss events involving valued social groups and is driven by the perception of missed bonding and concerns about how this may negatively affect their future relationships. People feel greater FOMO when they miss events involving valued others (vs. strangers or irrelevant social groups) and when events foster social bonding (vs. individ
