The hemodynamic and pulmonary effects of fluid resuscitation with crystalloid and colloid solutions in the presence of mild pulmonary edema were investigated. Anesthetized dogs received oleic acid to increase pulmonary capillary permeability, and one hour later bled to produce hemorrhagic shock. Hydroxyethyl starch 120 (HES 120/0.7, Plasmafusin) is the smallest medium molecular weight HES preparation used as a plasma substitute for all clinical purposes. Renal hemodynamics and tubular fractional sodium reabsorption (FSR) were evaluated by clearance techniques during acute and chronic extracellular volume expansion in man.
