A finite element study comparing Advansync® and Twin Block in mandibular anterior repositioning.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to utilize the finite element method (FEM) to compare the dentoalveolar and mandibular effects associated with anterior mandibular repositioning using AdvanSync® (ADV) and Twin Block (TB). METHODS: A patient with Class II skeletal malocclusion and mandibular retrognathism was selected. A TB appliance was subsequently applied. Computed Tomography (CT) scans were acquired at the beginning of treatment (T1) and 8 months later (T2). Concurrently, a numerical TB model was validated through FEM simulations, which were compared with the T2 results. The ADV appliance was vi

Digital-assisted diagnosis and orthodontic management of an impacted mandibular lateral incisor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The impaction of mandibular lateral incisors presents significant aesthetic and functional challenges in orthodontics, including Bolton ratio discrepancies and anterior occlusal anomalies. The increasing preference for nonextraction treatment further complicates space management within the dental arch. However, the advent of digital-assisted orthodontic technologies, particularly advanced digital simulations, has revolutionized the precision and effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment planning. These technologies enable clinicians to strategically leverage natural jaw development

Evaluation of pharyngeal airway space after orthodontic extraction treatment in class II malocclusion integrating with the subjective sleep quality assessment.

Orthodontic treatment with premolar extractions is typically used to relieve dental crowding and retract anterior teeth for lip profile improvement. The aim of the study is to compare the changes in regional pharyngeal airway space (PAS) after orthodontic treatment with Class II malocclusion and to identify the correlations between questionnaire results and PAS dimensions after orthodontic treatment. In this retrospective cohort study, 79 consecutive patients were divided into normodivergent nonextraction, normodivergent extraction, and hyperdivergent extraction groups. Serial lateral cephalog

Clear aligner treatment assisted by mini screw for an adult with Class II division 2 malocclusion and a right upper canine completely outside of the dental arch: A case report.

This case report describes a 19-year-old man presented with a 5.7-mm deep overbite, Class II division 2 malocclusion with the right upper maxillary canine completely buccal ectopia, deviated midline in the upper arch, severe crowding and retroclination of the maxillary and mandibular incisors. The patient was treated with clear aligners to correct the Class II relationship and the deep overbite. A series of clear aligners were used to move bilateral maxillary molars distally with unilateral mini-screw anchorage. The final results showed that clear aligners with mini-screws could effectively ac

[Clinical efficacy and influencing factors of molar distalization with clear aligner].

Dental crowding is the most common malocclusion, and molar distalization possesses significant advantages in obtaining space, molar neutral relationship and avoiding invasive manipulation. The esthetic problem remains a major challenge for traditional molar distalization appliances. However, the advent of clear aligner technology has brought a new strategy for molar distalization. Accordingly, this review seeks to evaluate the clinical efficacy of molar distalization with clear aligners from the perspectives of three-dimensional control, displacement accuracy, anchorage protection and post tre

Anterior open bite due to temporomandibular joint osteoarthrosis with muscle dysfunction treated with temporary anchorage devices.

Skeletal Class II high-angle open bite is often accompanied by osteoarthrosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ-OA). This type of malocclusion is challenging to correct, and it has been reported that patients with TMJ-OA treated with orthognathic surgery often experience skeletal relapse and a poor prognosis. This case report describes the treatment of a 25-year-old woman with retrognathia and TMJ-OA, whose masseter and temporal muscle activities were weak. Temporary anchorage devices were placed in the maxilla and the mandible, and the first molars were intruded. We used improved superelast

Twin Block appliance with acrylic capping does not have a significant inhibitory effect on lower incisor proclination.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of acrylic capping, treatment duration, overjet, and lower incisor inclination on the posttreatment tooth position in patients treated with 2 Twin Block (TB) appliance versions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cephalograms of 56 patients with Class II malocclusion (21 boys, 35 girls; mean age before treatment [T1] = 12.5 years; standard deviation, 0.7) treated with a TB appliance with either acrylic capping or ball-ended clasps on lower incisors were retrospectively collected and traced. Lower incisor inclination (L1-GoGn, L1-GoMe, L1-MP) was measured at T1 and aft

Nonsurgical treatment of severe Class II malocclusion with anterior open bite using mini-implants and maxillary lateral incisor and mandibular first molar extractions.

This clinical case report presents the nonsurgical orthodontic treatment of a patient with skeletal Class II malocclusion, posterior crossbite, anterior open bite, accentuated dental discrepancies in both arches, and an odontoma. The proposed treatment involved maxillary expansion, extraction of atypical maxillary lateral incisors and mandibular first molars, and intrusion of maxillary teeth with the aid of mini-implants. The results obtained with these procedures included good tooth alignment, normal overbite and overjet, removal of the odontoma, and a harmonious smile. In complex cases, an a

The first permanent molar: spontaneous eruption after a five-year failure.

BACKGROUND: It is rare for a first permanent molar (FPM) to temporarily exhibit clinical features of failure of eruption, followed by regeneration of full eruptive capacity 5 years later. Indeterminate failure of eruption (IFE) is a diagnosis of exclusion where the distinction between primary failure of eruption (PFE) and mechanical failure of eruption (MFE) is unclear, including patients too young to specify. CASE REPORT: An 11-year-old girl attended the orthodontic clinic at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust regarding an unerupted lower right FPM. Her medical and dental trauma history was u

Unpredictability of soft tissue changes after camouflage treatment of Class II division 1 malocclusion with maximum anterior retraction using miniscrews.

OBJECTIVE: To compare soft and hard tissue responses based on the degree of maxillary incisor retraction using maximum anchorage in patients with Class II division 1 malocclusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study sample was divided into moderate retraction (<8.0 mm; n = 28) and maximum retraction (≥8.0 mm; n = 29) groups based on the amount of maxillary incisor retraction after extraction of the maxillary and mandibular first premolars for camouflage treatment. Pre- and posttreatment lateral cephalograms were analyzed. RESULTS: There were 2.3 mm and 3.0 mm of upper and lower l

Invasive cervical resorption following orthodontic treatment: Two cases involving the same patient.

UNLABELLED: Invasive cervical resorption (ICR), a destructive form of external root resorption, is characterized by invasion of the fibrovascular tissue. This phenomenon is very rare and appears in 0.02% of the general population where the leading factors are orthodontics in addition to trauma, restorations, and bleaching. Heavy orthodontic force may increase the incidence to 1%. One of the main concerns regarding ICR is that it is often misdiagnosed with conventional diagnostic tools. In recent decades, a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging technique has become more common and can le

Severe open bite due to traumatic condylar fractures treated nonsurgically with implanted miniscrew anchorage.

This case report illustrates the use of miniscrews to treat a patient with an open bite caused by mandibular condylar fractures. The patient was 36 years old when she visited our hospital with a chief complaint of difficulty with chewing. She had suffered condylar and maxillary bone fractures in a traffic accident 6 months before her visit. She had an anterior open bite and Angle Class II molar relationships. Her mandibular midline was deviated to the right relative to the maxilla. The cephalometric analysis showed a skeletal Class II relationship. Titanium miniscrews were implanted in the bil

Electromyographic evaluation of the upper lip according to the breathing mode: a longitudinal study.

The present study aimed at analyzing and comparing longitudinally the EMG (electromyographic activity) of the superior orbicularis oris muscle according to the breathing mode. The sample, 38 adolescents with Angle Class II Division 1 malocclusion with predominantly nose (PNB) or mouth (PMB) breathing, was evaluated at two different periods, with a two-year interval between them. For that purpose, a 16channel electromyography machine was employed, which was properly calibrated in a PC equipped with an analogue-digital converter, with utilization of surface, passive and bipolar electrodes. The R

Long-term results of early condylar fracture correction: case report.

Condylar fractures in childhood occur frequently, often with minimal pain and discomfort and therefore the diagnosis is not made at the time of injury. Management may be surgical or non-surgical. Non-surgical therapy in children is the method of choice if the condyle can translate normally. In fact, there is an excellent chance of regeneration and continued normal development after fracture in growing patients. The purpose of this article is to describe the long-term clinical and radiological evaluation of a conservatively treated unilateral condylar fracture, a result of trauma, in a 6-year-o

Orthodontic therapy in patients with pericoronal hamartoma.

Pericoronal lesions are undesirable for dental eruption, and they are always associated with unerupted teeth. Pericoronal lesions are common and are usually treated by extraction of the permanent tooth. Pericoronal hamartoma is a special type of pericoronal lesion, and little information about it is available in the orthodontic literature. This report presents a patient with pericoronal hamartoma on the mandibular left permanent first molar who had orthodontic treatment. Because of the similarity of the radiographic radiolucency of pericoronal hamartoma and other lesions, a differential diagno
