High-frequency oscillations in the brain open a new window for studies of language development in humans. The objective of this study is to determine the spatiotemporal and frequency signatures of word processing in healthy children. Sixty healthy children aged 6-17 years were studied with a whole-cortex magnetoencephalography (MEG) system using a word recognition paradigm optimized for children. The temporal signature of neuromagnetic activation was measured using averaged waveforms. The spatial and frequency signatures of neuromagnetic activation were assessed with wavelet-based beamformer a

There has recently been a resurgence in the idea that amnesia may be characterized by an increased susceptibility to interference. In the present study we tested this idea using a well-controlled and well-established animal model of amnesia: impairment in object recognition following perirhinal and postrhinal cortical (PPRh) damage. We used this paradigm to test whether memory impairment was exacerbated by the interpolation of a potentially interfering item either before (proactive interference) or after (retroactive interference) the to-be-remembered item. Rats with PPRh damage were impaired

We report a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) adaptation study of two well-described patients, DF and PS, who present face identity recognition impairments (prosopagnosia) following brain-damage. Comparing faces to non-face objects elicited activation in all visual areas of the cortical face processing network that were spared subsequent to brain damage. The common brain lesion in the two patients was in the right inferior occipital cortex, in the territory of the right "occipital face area" ('OFA'), which strengthens the critical role of this region in processing faces. Despite the

Patients with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) often have difficulty reading facial expressions and deciphering their implied meaning. We focused on semantic encoding related to face cognition to investigate event-related potentials (ERPs) to the subject's own face and familiar faces in children with and without PDD. Eight children with PDD (seven boys and one girl; aged 10.8+/-2.9 years; one left-handed) and nine age-matched typically developing children (four boys and five girls; aged 11.3+/-2.3 years; one left-handed) participated in this study. The stimuli consisted of three face im

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical course and the multimodal imaging of acute idiopathic maculopathy.
METHODS: Medical records and multimodal imaging including color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, and fundus autofluorescence were retrospectively reviewed. Recognition of the fundus autofluorescence patterns and their relationship with the disease duration, best-corrected visual acuity, and optical coherence tomography features represented the main outcome measures.
RESULTS: Seventeen eyes of 16 patients (7 women; mean age 29.9 years) with a mean follow-up of 23.9 months were

BACKGROUND: Acquired visual agnosia in the context of continuous spikes and waves during slow sleep (CSWS) is rarely described. We present a case of an almost 7-year-old boy who lost his ability to name pictures and recognize familiar faces. Initial encephalography (EEG) revealed sleep induced epileptiform activity with a spike-wave index (SWI) of 100%, predominanting in the left posterior head region.
METHODS: Serial neuropsychological testing with concomitant EEG was done during the first 18 months of treatment with intravenous methylprednisolone. We administered intelligence scales, verbal

In everyday life, we sometimes fail to notice a second event if it follows too closely after another-this phenomenon, known as the attentional blink (AB), reveals inherent limits in our ability to process rapid streams of information. The AB is characterized by an impairment in accurately identifying a second target (T2), presented after a first target (T1) within a 200-500 ms window amid a rapid sequence of distractors. It has been widely theorized that the AB results from constraints on late-stage processing. Building on the classic AB paradigm, we manipulated response congruency between T1

One of the distinctive features of the human visual system is the presence in occipito-temporal cortex (OTC) of regions that show preferential activation to specific categories of visual objects. To understand how this selectivity relates to categorization behavior, studies have employed a distance-to-bound (DTB) approach, where multivariate brain activity is used to estimate a decision boundary, from which behavioral performance can be predicted. Using this approach, correlations have been found between activity in OTC and behavioral performance when carrying out certain categorization tasks.

Neuroscience has long relied on macaque studies to infer human brain function, yet identifying functionally corresponding brain regions across species and measurement modalities remains a fundamental challenge. This is especially true for the higher-order cortex, where functional interpretations are constrained by narrow hypotheses and anatomical landmarks are often nonhomologous. We present a data-driven approach for mapping functional correspondence across species using rich, naturalistic stimuli. By directly comparing macaque electrophysiology with human fMRI responses to 700 natural scenes

Fractals are self-similar patterns that repeat at different scales, the complexity of which are expressed as a fractional Euclidean dimension D between 0 (a point) and 2 (a filled plane). The drip paintings of American painter Jackson Pollock (JP) are fractal in nature, and Pollock's most illustrious works are of the high-D (~1.7) category. This would imply that people prefer more complex fractal patterns, but some research has instead suggested people prefer lower-D fractals. Furthermore, research has suggested that parietal and frontal brain activity tracks the complexity of fractal patterns

Left parietal cortex has been associated with the human-specific ability of sophisticated tool use. Yet, it is unclear how tool information is represented across senses. Here, we compared auditory and visual tool-specific activations within healthy human subjects to probe the relation of tool-specific networks, uni- and multisensory response properties, and functional and structural connectivity using functional and diffusion-weighted MRI. In each subject, we identified an auditory tool network with regions in left anterior inferior parietal cortex (aud-aIPL), bilateral posterior lateral sulcu

The human frontal cortex is asymmetrically involved in motivational and affective processing. Several studies have shown that the left-frontal hemisphere is related to positive and approach-related affect, whereas the right-frontal hemisphere is related to negative and withdrawal-related affect. The present study aimed to investigate whether evolutionarily threatening stimuli modulate asymmetrical frontal activity. We examined hemispheric differences in frontal late positive potentials (f-LPP asymmetry) and frontal alpha power activation (frontal alpha asymmetry, FAA) in response to images dep

Integrating evidence that contradicts a belief is a fundamental aspect of belief revision and is closely linked to delusions in schizophrenia. In a previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study on healthy individuals, we identified functional brain networks underlying evidence integration as visual attention network (VsAN; dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, insula, occipital regions), default-mode network (DMN), and cognitive evaluation network (CEN; orbitofrontal cortex, inferior frontal gyrus, parietal cortex). In the current clinical fMRI study, we compared network-based activi

Metacognition is impaired in schizophrenia and is an important predictor of functional outcome, but the underlying neuropathology is not clear. Studies have implicated frontal regions and there is also some evidence that the hippocampus might play a pivotal role, but findings are inconsistent. We set out to more comprehensively investigate the neural underpinnings of insight in first-episode psychosis (FEP) using 2 metacognitive measures (the Beck Cognitive Insight Scale [BCIS]) and a perceptual metacognitive accuracy task alongside structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We measured cort

Right parietal cortex has recently been linked to the temporal resolution of attention. We therefore sought to investigate whether disruption to right parietal cortex would affect attention to visual stimuli presented for brief durations. Participants performed a visual discrimination task before and after 10 minutes repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (1 Hz) to right or central parietal cortex as well as 20 minutes after the second block of trials. Participants reported the spatial frequency of a masked Gabor patch presented for a brief duration of 60, 120, or 240 ms. We calculated e

The present study aimed at describing the effects of perceptual load on neurocognitive processes of decision-making. To this aim, we used a visual-motor discriminative task in which pairs of stimuli were assigned to either target or non-target categories. For each category, stimulus configuration was defined as simple or complex according to orientation and arrangement of the constituent segments. Analyses of prefrontal ERPs revealed that the pP1 component (at 180 ms) was larger for complex stimuli than simple for both categories, and the same result was found for the pP2 component (at 320 ms)

Sex differences in visuospatial cognition have long been reported, with men being advantaged on the Mental Rotations Test (MRT). The data, however, are variable, and sensitive to design parameters. When men and women are compared directly, with women in different hormonal milieus combined, there seem to be sex differences. When women alone are studied, taking into account different ovarian steroid concentrations and treatments, MRT performance varies with these changes. Indeed, several reports describe better performance among women with reduced estrogens. To better understand whether the sex

Although the role of cortical structures in skilled and impaired reading has been the topic of considerable investigation, the contribution of subcortical structures to reading performance is less well understood. Here, we assess the role of the caudate, putamen, and thalamus in adults with and without reading impairment. Thirty-three individuals (19 skilled readers and 14 reading impaired individuals) participated in two functional MRI tasks: (a) silent reading of real words and (b) silent reading of nonwords. Percent signal change was calculated for each of the three structures by evaluating

In human occipitotemporal cortex, category-specific processing for visual objects seems to involve pairs of cortical regions, often with one located in the occipital cortex and another more anteriorly. We investigated whether such an arrangement might be the case for visual word processing. In addition to the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA) located in the occipitotemporal sulcus, we observed that another region in occipital lobe with robust responses to written words (Chinese characters). The current fMRI study investigated this area's precise location and its functional selectivity using Chinese
