Background Apical periodontitis (AP) is one of the most common infectious diseases in dental clinics; the success of root canal treatment is largely limited by the severity of bone destruction, residual infection, and ongoing inflammation. Stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAPs) can promote periapical bone repair and improve the outcomes of root canal treatment. Existing studies suggest that inflammatory environments can affect the differentiation potential of SCAPs, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are still unclear. Methods and Results In this study, we isolated, cultured, and char

Vital pulp therapy (VPT) has been increasingly advocated due to its advantages in preserving tooth vitality. While VPT is often successful, failures can occur, and traditional root canal therapy is often recommended following VPT failure. This case report provides an example of successful preservation of tooth vitality using coronal pulpotomy (CP), a more invasive type of VPT, after failure of partial pulpotomy (PP) that had been performed in a healthy 10-year-old boy. A mandibular right first molar with a diagnosis of reversible pulpitis was initially treated with PP, which included the use o

BACKGROUND Dental fusion is a developmental dental anomaly that clinicians must be aware of and able to identify. It results from the union of 2 adjacent tooth germs affecting the normal dentition and leads to a decrease in the number of permanent teeth. Clinically, the fused teeth show excessive width and irregular anatomy and can complicate any endodontic intervention. CASE REPORT A 26-year-old male patient presented to the clinic with severe pain related to the lower right mandibular area. The dental examination revealed a large tilted and irregular fused third molar with the fourth molar.

INTRODUCTION: Taurodontism is an aberration in tooth morphology characterized by vertically enlarged pulp chambers, apical displacement of pulp floors, and short roots. So far in the literature, no more than 8 taurodonts have been reported in 1 patient. The aim of this case report was to describe the endodontic management of a hypertaurodont maxillary second molar and to present a rare case with 10 taurodonts in a black man with a biometric analysis using cone-beam computed tomographic imaging.
METHODS: An 18 year-old black man was referred to the postgraduate endodontic clinic for emergency

The Composipost endodontic post, made of stretched aligned carbon fibers embedded in an epoxy-resin matrix, has since the beginning of the nineties been widely used for the restoration of endodontically treated teeth. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the treatment outcome of the Composipost system up to 7 years. In a study published 1998, 236 patients treated during 1992-93 by seven Swedish general dental private practitioners were studied. Five of the former seven private practitionersi consented to participate in this follow up of that study. Thus the material was reduced

Dental pain, estimated to affect 12-40% of community-dwelling adults, is a symptom of a wide range of clinical conditions. A population screening instrument is needed to study their prevalence. This project aimed to develop a questionnaire for classifying a sample of dental pain patients into three groups of common dental pain conditions, i.e. Group 1 (Acute periapical periodontitis and Irreversible pulpitis), Group 2 (Reversible pulpitis and Dentine hypersensitivity) and Group 3 (Pericoronitis). Initial items were generated through a literature review, individual unstructured patient intervie…

CONTEXT: Apical periodontitis (AP) is an inflammatory condition caused by root canal infection. Primary AP (PAP) arises from untreated necrotic pulp and is typically polymicrobial, whereas persistent or refractory AP (RAP) occurs after root canal treatment (RCT) and may reflect selective microbial survival.
AIM: The study aimed to compare the root canal microbiomes in PAP and persistent AP using 16S rRNA gene sequencing in a standardized mandibular molar cohort.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Comparative, observational, cross-sectional study conducted at a tertiary care dental institution.

AIM: Apical periodontitis (AP) is the chronic inflammation of the periradicular tissues in response to root canal infection. Whilst AP has been linked with systemic inflammation and noncommunicable diseases, its potential association with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is unknown. We aimed to evaluate the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels as surrogate markers of hepatic injury, and the systemic inflammatory burden in otherwise healthy individuals with and without AP diagnosis.
METHODOLOGY: Cross-sectional study. Individuals with AP (n =

In essence, endodontics as a clinical discipline is concerned with the prevention and treatment of pulpal and periapical infection. In recent research the infective process has been investigated as well as the mechanisms by which the pulp and periodontium deal with microbial insults. With regard to the pulp, findings on the hemodynamics of pulpitis suggest that the inflammatory response in this tissue is much less influenced by the special anatomic environment of the tooth than was previously believed. Pulpal diseases are being underdiagnosed, mostly because of inadequate examination methods.

BACKGROUND: Segmental root developmental arrest (SRDA) is an uncommon developmental pattern in immature permanent teeth with apical periodontitis, in which a separated apical segment continues to develop independently of the main root. This retrospective study evaluated the frequency, clinical features, and factors associated with SRDA after regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) or apexification.
METHODS: A total of 103 immature permanent teeth with apical periodontitis treated with REPs or apexification were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical records and radiographs were assessed for SRD
