Stoichiometric Reduction of Dinitrogen to Hydrazine Upon Protonation of Heterobimetallic Chromium-Aluminum Hydride Complexes.

The activation of dinitrogen (N2) via heterobimetallic cooperation remains a compelling strategy for N2 functionalization. Herein, we report the synthesis and reactivity of a well-defined chromium-aluminum hydride dinitrogen complex, [(depe)2(H)Cr(μ-N2)AlH2]2 (depe = Et2PCH2CH2PEt2). Crystallographic and spectroscopic analyses reveal substantial N2 reduction driven by a "push-pull" interaction between the electron-rich Cr centers and the electrophilic Al Lewis acid core. Upon stoichiometric protonation with [Ph2NH2]OTf, the highly activated bridging N2 units undergo selective proton-coupled re

Deprescribing proton pump inhibitors in long-term care: Outcomes of a pharmacist-led initiative.

BACKGROUND: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are frequently continued without clear indication in long-term care (LTC) settings. Evidence-based deprescribing strategies may reduce unnecessary exposure, but real-world data from Middle Eastern LTC facilities remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility, implementation, and short-term safety of a pharmacist-led PPI deprescribing initiative in a long-term care facility. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included LTC residents receiving PPIs who underwent pharmacist-led medication review between September and November 2024. Resident

Overuse of Intravenous Proton-Pump Inhibitors in the Treatment of Low-Risk Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding.

BACKGROUND: In patients with acute upper GI bleeding (UGIB), current best practice is to discontinue or transition (to oral) intravenous proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) when esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) reveals low risk or no peptic ulcer disease (PUD). STUDY: This retrospective study from a large academic medical center evaluated the use of intravenous PPIs in patients admitted with acute UGIB due to low-risk PUD or non-PUD UGIB. Complete clinical data including endoscopic lesions and the duration of intravenous PPI therapy were recorded. RESULTS: Of 335 patients with acute UGIB, 253 had

Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance With Time-Frequency Analysis: A Potential Diagnostic Approach for Keloids.

Keloids are chronic fibroproliferative skin disorders with high recurrence rates and limited treatment options, yet reliable diagnostic biomarkers are lacking. Current classification systems rely heavily on clinical observation, underscoring the need for objective, noninvasive tools. In this exploratory study, serum-based 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement combined with short-time Fourier transform (STFT) for time-frequency analysis was performed, followed by principal component analysis (PCA), to investigate potential patient subgroups. Serum samples from 29 patients were analyse

Tuning Proton Activity in Organic Electrolytes for Selective CO2-to-Long-Chain Hydrocarbon Conversion.

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into long-chain hydrocarbons (HCs), using protons from water and renewable electricity, is a potential pathway to synthesizing carbon-neutral liquid fuels. Recent studies have shown that nickel-based catalysts can drive this transformation; however, their ability to selectively generate hydrocarbons is often limited by the competing water reduction to hydrogen gas (H2). In this work, proton activity in an aprotic dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) electrolyte is systematically tuned by introducing a series of alcohol proton donors. Across this donor…

Ten-year outcomes for image-guided moderately hypofractionated proton therapy for prostate cancer.

PURPOSE: To report 10-year outcomes after image-guided moderately hypofractionated proton therapy for prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using an IRB-approved, single institutional prospective outcomes registry at our institution between 2008 and 2015, we updated the previously reported outcomes results of 582 prostate cancer patients treated with double-scattered moderately hypofractionated proton therapy. Two hundred and seventy-one patients had low-risk, and 311 had intermediate-risk disease, including 148 with favorable intermediate-risk and 163 with unfavorable-intermediate-risk. Th

The Effect of Nanoparticle Structure on the Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reactions to V2O5.

Proton-coupled electron transfers (PCETs) to metal oxides are key reactions for sustainable catalytic and energy storage processes. The factors that control PCET reactions on metal oxides are, however, not well understood, with the effect of particle morphology/surface faceting on the thermodynamics and kinetics of PCET being essentially untested. We measured the thermodynamics and kinetics of PCET from CpCr(CO)3H to five V2O5 samples of varying morphologies/surface faceting. Their nanostructures were assessed by Rietveld refinement accounting for preferred crystallite orientation, giving a se

Site Spacing Reconstruction Toward Perfect Hydrogen-Bond Network for Fast Proton Transport.

Proton-conducting materials are essential to electrochemical energy storage, conversion and sensing, yet their performance is restricted by structural limitations. A key structural constraint is the architecture-imposed separation between hydrophilic sites, which prevents the formation of fully developed, continuous hydrogen-bond networks and imposes a persistent bottleneck on proton transport. Here, we propose a site spacing reconstruction strategy to strengthen the hydrogen-bond network and validate its effectiveness using a hydrogen-bonded organic framework built from 1,3,5-tris(4-carboxyph

Cytochrome P450 Enzymes in the Metabolism of Proton Pump Inhibitors: Implications for the Treatment of Peptic Ulcers.

INTRODUCTION: Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) remains a prevalent gastrointestinal condition primarily caused by Helicobacter pylori infection and chronic NSAID use. Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are the mainstay therapy, promoting mucosal healing through profound gastric acid suppression. However, variable clinical outcomes are frequently observed, largely influenced by individual differences in PPI metabolism mediated by cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzymes, especially CYP2C19 and CYP3A4. METHODS: The review is a critical analysis of the evidence on PPI pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics, and drug-d

Ultrahigh Anhydrous Proton Transport in Imidazole-Confined Thiol-Functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Developing porous solid-state proton conductors with high conductivity under anhydrous conditions is critical for fuel cell technology. Here, based on a chemically stable thiol-containing Zr-based metal-organic framework (Zr-DMSA), a superior anhydrous proton transport hybrid material (Im@Zr-DMSA) has been designed by hosting it with imidazole. Benefiting from the abundant thiol groups, permanent porosity, and robust three-dimensional framework of Zr-DMSA, the imidazole-confined Im@Zr-DMSA exhibits a wide-temperature range duration from 40 to 130 °C, showing superior proton conductivity of 1.1

Proton Radiation-Induced Cognitive Impairment via Disruption of Hippocampal Neuronal Mitophagic Homeostasis.

Background: Proton radiation is both a core component of the space radiation environment and a pivotal modality for precision clinical tumor radiotherapy. Proton exposure can impair cognitive, learning and memory functions, representing a common concern in the fields of deep space aerospace medicine and clinical radiotherapy. Nevertheless, the cellular and molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying proton-induced cognitive impairment remain incompletely elucidated. Methods: In vivo and in vitro injury models were established via 100 MeV proton radiation. Specifically, an in vivo model of proto

Time series analysis for optimal offline replanning timing in head and neck proton therapy.

BACKGROUND: Inter-fraction anatomical changes can compromise proton treatment quality. Offline replanning is a common approach to rectify the anatomical changes during fractionated treatment. It is important to determine the optimal timing for replanning, because offline replanning can only occur a limited number of times. OBJECTIVES: This study determines optimal replanning timing for proton head and neck patients, when one replanning is allowed. METHODS: This study proposes a methodology for identifying optimal replanning timing on a daily basis, which involved creating actual replans for

Safe Proton Beam Re-irradiation With a Bioabsorbable Spacer in Pancreatic Cancer: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: Proton beam therapy (PBT) re-irradiation for pancreatic cancer is challenging because of accumulated dose limits in surrounding gastrointestinal organs. Bioabsorbable polyglycolic acid (PGA) spacers can reduce radiation exposure to adjacent organs. This report aims to detail the safe execution of PBT re-irradiation for recurrent pancreatic body cancer adjacent to the stomach using a PGA spacer and physically verify the spacer's proton beam blocking effectiveness via auto-activation positron emission tomography (AAPET). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 77-year-old female with pancreatic body c

Loss of proton-sensing TDAG8 increases tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer.

T-cell death-associated gene 8 (TDAG8) is a proton-sensing G-protein-coupled receptor that is activated by neutral to acidic extracellular pH. TDAG8 is primarily expressed in leukocytes and leukocyte-rich tissues, including the spleen, lymph nodes, and thymus. Genome-wide association studies have identified TDAG8 as a risk gene for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Patients with IBD have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC), and TDAG8 has been implicated in regulating anti-tumor immunity. We used the MC38 and azoxymethane/dextran sodium sulfate (AOM/DSS) mouse models of CRC

Comparative treatment planning of photon, proton and carbon ion radiotherapy for sphenoid wing meningiomas.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sphenoid wing meningiomas (SWMs) are located adjacent to critical organs of interest (OOIs) and present challenges f … erapy. The mean estimated risk of radiation-induced secondary malignancies was 1.7 for photons over protons, and 2.7 for photons over carbon ions. CONCLUSIONS: For SWMs, particle therapy demonstrated reduced dose exposure to several OOIs, and may lower the risk of side effects compared with VMAT.

Comparison of model-based and delineation-based target volume definition for ocular proton therapy.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, eye-specific, high-resolution MRI protocols have become available for ocular tumours, enabling 3D tumour delineation. Despite these advances, ocular proton therapy typically still relies on model-based target volume definition. Therefore, the aim of this research was to compare model-based and delineation-based target volume definition for ocular tumours. METHODS: Tumours were delineated for 70 uveal melanoma patients. From the delineated tumour base, polynomial models of different degrees were generated. Additionally, model variations with expanded base and added

Proton beam therapy for oropharyngeal cancer (TORPEdO): a phase 3, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The clinical benefits of intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) compared with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma remain uncertain with respect to treatment-related effects on physical function and quality of life. We aimed to compare late functional, patient-reported, disease control, and survival outcomes between IMPT and IMRT. METHODS: We did a phase 3 trial (TORPEdO) in 20 UK National Health Service hospitals. We randomly assigned (2:1) patients with locally advanced oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma to IM

Characterization of Pulmonary Dysfunction in Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Using Xenon and Proton MRI.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated lung disease (SJIA-LD) is increasingly recognized and associated with potentially life-threatening complications. Diagnosis is challenging as SJIA-LD is complex and frequently presents with subtle or no respiratory symptoms, necessitating CT imaging or other tests to detect budding dysfunction. We hypothesized that xenon and proton lung MRI could identify SJIA-LD-associated structural changes and functional deficits. METHODS: Thirty-one participants aged 5-15 (16 healthy, 7 SJIA without diagnosed lung disease [SJIA-non-LD], 8 SJI
