Comparing the detectability of pulmonary nodules on two ultra-high resolution CT scanners: a preliminary phantom study.

OBJECTIVES: To objectively and subjectively compare the detectability of pulmonary nodules on an ultra-high-resolution CT (UHR-CT) scanner equipped with energy-integrating detectors and a photon-counting CT (PCCT) in UHR mode. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An image quality phantom and an anthropomorphic phantom were scanned on a UHR-CT and a PCCT in UHR mode at 7.5/2.5/0.4 mGy. The parameters typically used for UHR chest CT scans were selected. Noise power spectrum and task-based transfer function were computed to assess noise-magnitude, noise texture (fav), and spatial resolution (f50), respectivel

Body surface area measurement in laboratory miniature pigs using a computed tomography scanner.

The body surface area (BSA) of an organism is an important parameter for evaluating physiological functions. In drug development, normalization by BSA is an appropriate method for extrapolating doses between species. The BSA of animals has generally been estimated by multiplying a constant by the power of the body weight (BW). Recently, the use of miniature pigs in non-clinical studies for medical drugs or devices has gradually been increasing. However, verification of their BSA is not as yet sufficient. In this study, we measured the BSAs of 40 laboratory miniature pigs (11 males and 9 female

Computer assisted localizer for planning of surgery and intra-operative orientation.

There is discrepancy between the exact representation of anatomical structures and tumours in the CT or MRI scan and the more or less accurate intra-operative localisation methods based mostly upon landmarks of the skull and extracerebral space and visible abnormalities of the cerebral surface. To overcome these problems of exact intra-operative localisation a Computer Assisted Localizer (CAL) is presented which allows precise intra-operative orientation without these aids. It consists of a mechanically articulated arm with six degrees of freedom with a high precision digital incremental and a

Enhancement of mammographic density measures in breast cancer risk prediction.

BACKGROUND: Mammographic density is a strong risk factor for breast cancer. METHODS: We present a novel approach to enhance area density measures that takes advantage of the relative density of the pectoral muscle that appears in lateral mammographic views. We hypothesized that the grey scale of film mammograms is normalized to volume breast density but not pectoral density and thus pectoral density becomes an independent marker of volumetric density. RESULTS: From analysis of data from a Swedish case-control study (1,286 breast cancer cases and 1,391 control subjects, ages 50-75 years), we

Bolstering the Performance of Breast Radiologists with AI-CAD in Mammography: A Multireader Study.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among females globally and across most Asian countries. In 2022, Asia's age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) was 34.3/100,000, with age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) of 10.5.1000,000. Many Asian countries experience high incidence-to-mortality ratio due to limited organized screening programs, resource constraints and manpower limitations. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in mammography interpretation may help address these challenges. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This multinational retrospective study evalu

New immature hominin fossil from European Lower Pleistocene shows the earliest evidence of a modern human dental development pattern.

Here we present data concerning the pattern of dental development derived from the microcomputed tomography (microCT) study of a recently discovered immature hominin mandible with a mixed dentition recovered from the TD6 level of the Gran Dolina Lower Pleistocene cave site in Sierra de Atapuerca, northern Spain. These data confirm our previous results that nearly 1 million years ago at least one European hominin species had a fully modern pattern of dental development with a clear slowdown in the development of the molar field regarding the anterior dental field. Furthermore, using available i
