Integrating Perspectives on Family Caregiving After Critical Illness: A Qualitative Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: To date, no intervention has definitively improved outcomes for families of critical illness survivors. An integrated perspective on caregivers' needs after critical illness could help identify high-priority intervention targets and improve outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To obtain diverse perspectives on the needs, barriers and facilitators, and social determinants of health associated with family caregiving across the critical illness continuum and assess the extent to which successful caregiving interventions in other populations may be adapted to the critical illness context. METHODS:

Development and Validation of the Celiac Disease-Children's Activities Report (CD-Chart) for Promoting Self-Management among Children and Adolescents.

Adherence to a restrictive gluten-free diet is the only known treatment for celiac disease (CD). Children and adolescents with CD encounter challenges while managing the diet in daily activities. Understanding their participation characteristics is lacking. The aim was to describe the development and validation process of the Celiac Disease-Children's Activities Report (CD-Chart). The final CD-Chart includes nine food-related activities that are measured by six core dimensions: frequency, preference, preparation, involvement, help, and self-determination. Participants were 126 children (8-11 y

Guided and unguided CBT for social anxiety disorder and/or panic disorder via the Internet and a smartphone application: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Smartphone technology presents a novel and promising opportunity to extend the reach of psychotherapeutic interventions by moving selected parts of the therapy into the real-life situations causing distress. This randomised controlled trial will investigate the effects of a transdiagnostic, Internet-administered cognitive behavioural (iCBT) self-help program for anxiety, supplemented with a smartphone application. The effect of added therapist support will also be studied. METHODS/DESIGN: One hundred and fifty participants meeting diagnostic criteria for social anxiety disorder an

Impact of a nurse-led and a web-based psychoeducational program for advanced cancer patients and their caregivers: Results of a three-arm randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Advanced cancer impacts the lives of both patients and their family caregivers. They often experience substantial declines in quality of life and physical, emotional, and spiritual distress that generate significant unmet psychosocial care needs. These effects are interrelated. Dyadic psychoeducational interventions, helping dyads to manage the impact of the disease and maintain their quality of life, demonstrate benefits by concurrently addressing challenges for oncology patients and family caregivers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a face-to-face nurse-led a

Caregiver outcomes of the REACH-HF multicentre randomized controlled trial of home-based rehabilitation for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers frequently provide support to people living with long-term conditions. However, there is paucity of evidence of interventions that support caregivers in their role. Rehabilitation EnAblement in Chronic Heart Failure (REACH-HF) is a novel home-based, health-professional-facilitated, self-management programme for patients with heart failure (HF) and their caregivers. METHODS: Based on the random allocation of individual adult patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and left ventricular ejection fraction <45% within the past five years, the caregiver of patients wa

Invisible Needs and Uneven Recognition: A National FOI Study of Autism Support Across Diagnostic Stages in U.K. Universities.

This study investigates how universities in the United Kingdom identify and support autistic students across three groups (diagnosed, seeking diagnosis, self-identifying without wishing to pursue a diagnosis). In addition, it examines communication practices and interim adjustments. Freedom of Information (FOI) request questionnaires, issued under Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000 and FOI (Scotland) Act 2002, were submitted to 142 publicly funded U.K. universities, generating 125 valid responses (88%). The 77-item FOI questionnaire comprised multiple-choice and open-text items. Data were

Childbirth preparation is associated with self-efficacy and the use of non-pharmacological pain relief during labour.

Despite growing access to prenatal education, many women still report high levels of stress and dissatisfaction with their childbirth experience. Preparing for natural includes prenatal education, physical preparation of the body, and emotional support, which together help reduce anxiety, stress, and pain associated with childbirth. This study aimed to assess the extent of childbirth preparation among pregnant women and to evaluate how preparation impacts perceived stress, use of non-pharmacological pain relief methods, self-efficacy, and childbirth satisfaction. Cross-sectional studies were c

Self-admission to inpatient treatment in anorexia nervosa: Impact on healthcare utilization, eating disorder morbidity, and quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: Little evidence exists concerning the optimal model of inpatient care for patients with longstanding anorexia nervosa (AN). Self-admission has been developed as a treatment tool whereby patients with a history of high healthcare utilization are invited to decide for themselves when brief admission is warranted. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a self-admission program on healthcare utilization, eating disorder morbidity, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and sick leave for patients with AN. METHOD: In this cohort study, 29 participants with AN in a Swedish

Mental factors influencing recurrence of stress incontinence.

At a recent follow-up of 51 women operated on for stress incontinence, there was an astonishingly high discrepancy between symptoms claimed by the patients and signs found by the physician. To examine the influence of certain mental factors on the recurrence of stress incontinence, the patients in the above-mentioned follow-up were tested with the Eysenck Personality Inventory test and the Sabbatsberg Depression Self-rating Scale test. The women with symptoms but no objective signs of stress incontinence showed a higher degree of both neuroticism and depression than the women of perfect health

Self-inflicted burn injuries: Etiologies, risk factors and impact on institutional resources.

INTRODUCTION: Self-inflicted burns are a rare cause of injury, accounting for only 1.0% of burns in the United States. While rare, the physical and psychosocial ramifications of these injuries are lasting. The goal of this study was to examine the etiologies, risk factors and outcomes of self-inflected burns in an urban setting. METHODS: Records of all patients presented to a regional burn center from July 2011 to June 2015 were reviewed. Those who sustained a self-inflected burn were identified and included in this study. Demographic data, psychiatric history, previous self-harm records, ins

Support from a Best Friend Makes People Eat Less under Stress: Evidence from Two Experiments.

When experiencing acute stress, individuals often turn to eating for comfort, as it provides a sense of satiety and satisfaction that can temporarily alleviate the stressful condition. However, this may increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease. In this study, we conducted two behavioral experiments to investigate the effectiveness of social support in reducing stress-induced overeating and the mediative role of negative affect and self-efficacy (Experiment 1), as well as the role of reward sensitivity (Experiment 2). Acute stress was induced using a speech preparation tas

Body Image Perceptions of Women Veterans With Military Sexual Trauma.

The researchers were invited to a transitional home for homeless women veterans to help veterans with body image issues. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 12 veterans who perceived they had a physical difference due to military service. Data were obtained in focus groups where the veterans were invited to share stories. Ricoeur's hermeneutic phenomenology guided the study. The research team learned early in the data collection stage that 11 of the 12 participants suffered military sexual trauma (MST). Three structures emerged in the data: (a) to speak up or not to speak, (b) from milita

The Role of Regular Eating and Self-Monitoring in the Treatment of Bulimia Nervosa: A Pilot Study of an Online Guided Self-Help CBT Program.

Background: Despite cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) being regarded as the first-line treatment option for bulimia nervosa (BN), barriers such as its time-consuming and expensive nature limit patient access. In order to broaden treatment availability and affordability, the efficacy and convenience of CBT could be improved through the use of online treatments and selective emphasis on its most 'potent' components of which behavioural techniques form the focus. Method: Twenty-six individuals with BN were enrolled in an online CBT-based self-help programme and 17 completed four weeks of regula
