The presence of endotoxin activity in cases of experimentally-induced heartwater in sheep.

The presence of endotoxin was examined in 5 sheep with experimentally-induced heartwater. Two peaks in endotoxin levels were recorded in 4 out of the 5 sheep during the acute stage of the disease. The 1st peak coincided with or occurred shortly after the febrile reaction (over 40 degrees C). The 2nd peak occurred 3-5 days after the 1st, and in 2 sheep this 2nd elevation in endotoxin levels was associated with severe clinical signs (rapid and laboured breathing, cyanosis and recumbency), and 1 of the 2 sheep died on the day of the 2nd elevation. Desensitization of the acute inflammatory response in skin and mammary gland of sheep.

Desensitization of the inflammatory response was investigated in the mammary glands and skin of sheep. Following twice daily stimulation of non-lactating glands, neutrophil concentrations in inflammatory exudates during the seventh response to endotoxin (1 microgram) and zymosan-activated plasma (1 ml) were 30% and 20% and those in primary responses occurring concurrently in contralateral glands. The morphology and distribution of supraependymal structures in the ventricular system of sheep of both sexes were studied by common histological methods. Seven forms of supraependymal structures were distinguished according to shape; they are most frequent and most variable in the infundibular region of the third cerebral ventricle. Blood pressure and metabolic effects of 18-oxo-cortisol in sheep.

18-Oxo-cortisol (18-oxo-F) has been isolated from the urine of subjects with primary aldosteronism. This study examines the pressor, mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid effects of 18-oxo-F in conscious sheep--a well studied species for the assessment of the pressor effect of steroid hormones. 18-oxo-F (24 mg/day i.v. for 5 days, n = 3) increased mean arterial pressure MAP (64 +/- 2 mmHg control and 75 +/- 6 mmHg on day 5 P less than 0.001). Structure-activity relationships for blood pressure effects of prednisolone in sheep.

This study investigated the effect of 5 day infusions of 6 alpha and 9 alpha-fluoro and 16 alpha, 17 alpha-acetal analogues of prednisolone on blood pressure in conscious sheep. In vivo mineralocorticoid (MC) and glucocorticoid (GC) activities of these steroids were also measured. The fetal respiratory and electrocortical effects of 0.6 microgram to 600 micrograms of morphine, administered into the lateral cerebral ventricle, have been studied in chronically catheterised, unanaesthetized fetal sheep at 115-135 days gestation. Morphine at 0.6 microgram had no effect on breathing movements or electrocorticographic activity, and at 6 micrograms induced a period of apnoea (43-122 min) but had no effect on electrocortical activity. Village production of West African dwarf goats and sheep in Nigeria.

Results from a 41 month study of West African Dwarf goats and sheep under village conditions in south-west Nigeria are reported. Even at a very low level of management these trypanosomiasis-tolerant animals produced 2.01 kids or 1.51 lambs per dam per year. Mortality of young particularly kids and low growth rates limit production. Of these mortality is probably the first constraint to increased productivity and profitability. Control of peste des petits ruminants appears to significantly reduce mortality and should stimulate the further development of this production system.

Prophylactic efficacy of clorsulon against Fasciola hepatica in calves and sheep.

A daily oral 5 mg kg-1 dose of clorsulon for 28 days in calves given Fasciola hepatica cysts at 3, 5, and 7 days after initiation of treatment was highly effective in reducing worm burdens (98%) and preventing liver pathology.
