Gendered experiences of people living with tuberculosis or leprosy: A global systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Classified as poverty-related diseases (PRD) leprosy and tuberculosis (TB) are long-standing mycobacterial diseases strongly linked to poverty, stigma, and social exclusion, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. Gender norms further shape how individuals experience illness, access to care, and coping strategies, but evidence remains fragmented and largely disease-specific. This systematic review synthesizes qualitative evidence on lived experiences of people affected by TB or leprosy worldwide and compares gender inequities across both diseases to identify shared soc

Integrating Social Work Throughout the Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Trajectory to Improve Patient and Caregiver Outcomes.

Clinical social workers possess a dual skillset of social care and mental health care and are the largest group of psychosocial care providers in oncology. Psychosocial care is an integral component of quality healthcare. The prevailing model of psychosocial care in oncology is a brief consultation for patients who screen positive for distress at a particular timepoint. This model is insufficient for hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Patients and caregivers have evolving needs throughout the HCT process, and psychosocial care models should meet these needs. This white paper, a collabor

Understanding the dual role of individual position in multidimensional social support networks and depression levels: Insights from a nomination-driven framework.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between the structural characteristics (e.g., single dimension friendship networks) and functional characteristics (multi-dimension) of social support networks and depressive symptoms among college students. Data were collected from 1784 students across six Chinese universities using questionnaire surveys and a nomination-based social network analysis approach. Friendship and social support networks (including four dimensions of support: appraisal, belonging, tangible, and self-esteem), were constructed to exploring relationships between network

The role of parental attachment, cyberbullying victimization, and resilience in the effect of adverse childhood experiences on social anxiety among college students: a moderated chain mediation model.

OBJECTIVE: As societal pressures increase, many college students face social anxiety, especially those with adverse childhood experiences, which can lead to higher social anxiety in adulthood. Parental attachment and cyberbullying victimization may mediate this relationship, while resilience could alleviate the effects. This study, based on the stress-vulnerability model and attachment theory, investigates how adverse childhood experiences affect social anxiety among college students, with parental attachment and cyberbullying victimization as mediators and resilience as a moderator, forming a

The Association of Family and Friend Networks with Appetite: Structural Equation Modeling of the Indirect Effects of Depression among Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Appetite loss in older adults raises the risk of malnutrition and frailty. The recent emphasis on psychological and social support for appetite loss reveals the importance of robust social networks. Depression is linked to a decline in appetite and social networks. Social networks may influence appetite directly and indirectly through depression. This exploratory cross-sectional study categorizes social networks into family and friend networks to elucidate their direct and indirect effects. METHODS: The study analyzed 193 community-dwelling older adults (women 78.2%; mean age 77.1

A qualitative examination of social identity and stigma among adolescents recovering from alcohol or drug use.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol and other drug (AOD) use disorders are stigmatized conditions, but little is known about youth's experience of this stigma, which may threaten their developing social identity and recovery process. This study investigates youth's perceptions of AOD use-related stigma in the context of their social identity. METHODS: This study uses data from 12 youth (ages 17-19) who were in recovery from problematic AOD use. Participants completed a Social Identity Mapping in Addiction Recovery (SIM-AR) exercise, in which they created a visual map of their social groups, and semi-struct

Rejection Sensitivity and Sexual Minority Men's Social Anxiety Disorder: The Moderating Role of Sexual Identity Strength.

Although gay-related rejection sensitivity (RS) is associated with social anxiety among sexual minority men, little attention has been given to the validity of gay-related RS measures and to individual differences that might moderate the association between gay-related RS and social anxiety. In a population-based sample of sexual minority men, Study 1 (N = 114) investigated the incremental validity of gay-related RS and showed that gay-related RS scores significantly added to the prediction of social anxiety symptoms, even after controlling for personal RS scores. In a clinical sample of sexua

Brain stimulation to left prefrontal cortex modulates attentional orienting to gaze cues.

In social interactions, we rely on non-verbal cues like gaze direction to understand the behaviour of others. How we react to these cues is determined by the degree to which we believe that they originate from an entity with a mind capable of having internal states and showing intentional behaviour, a process called mind perception. While prior work has established a set of neural regions linked to mind perception, research has just begun to examine how mind perception affects social-cognitive mechanisms like gaze processing on a neuronal level. In the current experiment, participants performe

Population structure of humpback whales in the western and central South Pacific Ocean as determined by vocal exchange among populations.

For cetaceans, population structure is traditionally determined by molecular genetics or photographically identified individuals. Acoustic data, however, has provided information on movement and population structure with less effort and cost than traditional methods in an array of taxa. Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) produce a continually evolving vocal sexual display, or song, that is similar among all males in a population. The rapid cultural transmission (the transfer of information or behavior between conspecifics through social learning) of different versions of this displa

From interaction to identification: a mixed methods study on the formation mechanism of group identity among Ultimate Frisbee club members.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle sports like Ultimate Frisbee have emerged as important settings for social connection amid urban social atomization. Nevertheless, the voluntary and non-contractual nature of these clubs means they continue to face persistent challenges in sustaining membership. Although prior research has explored group identity in various sporting contexts, the mechanisms through which ritualized interaction and social exchange jointly contribute to members' identification remain insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the formation mechanism of group identity amo

Psychosocial Support as a Multidisciplinary Asset in Hypertension Care: A Systematic Review of Medication Adherence, Blood Pressure Outcomes, and Social Context Exposures.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension remains a major global health challenge that requires care strategies extending beyond pharmacological treatment. Psychosocial support may contribute to long-term self-management, medication adherence, and care coordination, but evidence remains dispersed across different support domains, social-context exposures, settings, and outcome measures. This systematic review aimed to synthesize recent evidence on psychosocial support, adverse social-context exposures, medication adherence, and blood pressure outcomes among adults with hypertension. Injury-Dependent and Disability-Specific Lumbar Spinal Gene Regulation following Sciatic Nerve Injury in the Rat.

Allodynia, hyperalgesia and spontaneous pain are cardinal sensory signs of neuropathic pain. Clinically, many neuropathic pain patients experience affective-motivational state changes, including reduced familial and social interactions, decreased motivation, anhedonia and depression which are severely debilitating. In earlier studies we have shown that sciatic nerve chronic constriction injury (CCI) disrupts social interactions, sleep-wake-cycle and endocrine function in one third of rats, a subgroup reliably identified six days after injury. CCI consistently produces allodynia and hyperalgesi
