Acute anal fissure is a common malady that results in morbidity. If a patient is not responsive to conservative treatment, the current recommended treatments are either anal dilatation or lateral internal sphincterotomy. Endoscopic therapy was attempted in 24 patients with spontaneous or postoperative persistent biliary fistulas. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography demonstrated the site of the fistula in 22 cases. Patients presenting with acute anal fissure were randomized into two treatment groups in a prospective clinical trial. Both groups received treatment for 3 weeks with a stool softener and lignocaine jelly.
