Effect of a single versus serial platelet-rich plasma injection on the healing of acute patellar tendon defect: an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on the frequency and timing of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in tendon healing. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of single versus multiple PRP injections in the healing of patellar tendon defects in the experimental model, through histological and biomechanical investigation. METHODS: Forty-four male skeletally mature Dutch rabbits were randomly divided into the five study groups ( A, B,C, D,E). After creating a longitudinal acute patellar tendon defect on both knees (One-third the width of the patella tendon), the right legs of the rabbits were

Functional Outcomes of Flexor Tendon Repair in the Fingers: A Comparison of Wide-Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet Versus Traditional Anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Flexor tendon lacerations in the fingers are challenging injuries that can be repaired using the wide-awake local anesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT) technique or under traditional anesthesia (TA). The purpose of our study was to compare the functional outcomes and complication rates of patients undergoing flexor tendon repair under WALANT versus TA. METHODS: All patients who underwent a primary flexor tendon repair in zone I and II without tendon graft for closed avulsions or open lacerations between 2015 and 2019 were identified. Electronic medical records were reviewed to record

[Quadriceps tendon rupture].

The quadriceps tendon often ruptures spontaneously without trauma, frequently following an eccentric load on the tendon (walking down stairs) in the case of a previous degenerative injury. Rupture after endoprosthetic knee replacement is a special etiological case. Predominantly men between 50 and 65 years of age are affected. Clinical signs are suprapatellar hematoma and the inability to actively straighten the knee. A typical examination finding is the "suprapatellar gap sign". Ultrasonography is the diagnostic imaging modality of first choice as it can be reliably visualize the rupture and

Distal Biceps Provocation Test.

PURPOSE: To describe and study a test for distal biceps tendon pathology other than complete tears. METHODS: In this prospective study, the biceps provocation test (BPT) was performed in a cohort of 30 patients with suspected distal biceps tendon pathology and 30 patients with another elbow pathology. Patients with a complete tear were excluded. Diagnosis was confirmed on magnetic resonance imaging or from surgical findings. The BPT is a 2-part test. The elbow is flexed to 70° with the forearm supinated. The examiner's hands are placed on the patient's forearm and the patient is asked to flex

Pyogenic Extensor Tenosynovitis of the Wrist-A Cause of Spontaneous Extensor Tendon Rupture: A Report of 2 Cases.

CASES: We present 2 cases of spontaneous extensor tendon rupture in the setting of pyogenic extensor tenosynovitis of the wrist caused by penetrating wounds-a cat bite and injection drug use in patients 1 and 2, respectively. Patient 1 underwent reconstruction of the extensor digitorum communis tendons with palmaris longus autograft. Patient 2 declined surgical reconstruction. CONCLUSIONS: These cases highlight a rare but severe complication of dorsal hand/wrist infection. Early surgical intervention should be considered to prevent this complication, which may have permanent functional conseq

Biceps, Brachialis, and Triceps.

Tendon injuries at the elbow affect mostly the distal biceps and can progressively degenerate over time or rupture in an acute event. The degree of retraction may depend on the integrity of the lacertus fibrosus, a fibrous expansion that merges with the forearm flexor fascia. Biceps disorders are frequently associated with fluid or synovitis of the adjacent bicipital bursa; primary bursal disorders (primary inflammatory synovitis) can also be observed. Distal triceps is less frequently injured than the distal biceps, and tears usually manifest as distal ruptures with avulsion of a small flake …

Anatomical Study of Stabilizing Structures of the Extensor Carpi Ulnaris Tendon Around the Wrist.

PURPOSE: The sixth dorsal extensor compartment is a relatively common site of stenosing tenosynovitis in the upper extremity, but the exact location of stenosis is not fully understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the detailed anatomy of structures surrounding the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) tendon around the wrist. METHODS: Fifty fresh human cadaveric wrists were used for gross observation and morphology measurements of the sixth dorsal compartment and the ECU subsheath. An additional 13 wrists were used for histological examination. We evaluated the morphology of support

Arthroscopic visualization of subscapularis tendon lesions.

Certain lesions of the subscapularis tendon are difficult to identify during routine shoulder arthroscopy due to the fact that complete visualization of the tendon's insertion on the lesser tuberosity can be challenging. This article describes a maneuver used during shoulder arthroscopy that provides excellent visualization of the subscapularis tendon insertion on the proximal humerus. This technique is advantageous because (1) it allows for complete visualization of the intra-articular tendinous insertion of the subscapularis using a standard 30 degrees arthroscope inserted through the standa

Achilles tendon rupture and tendinopathy: management of complications.

Ailments of the Achilles tendon are on the increase and present in athletic and sedentary patients. The management of tendinopathy and rupture is not codified; Achilles tendon rupture and tendinopathy can be managed conservatively or surgically. Tackling the complications that arise from the management of these conditions provides a formidable challenge to the surgeon. Rupture, rerupture, disordered scarring with potential keloid formation, nerve damage (especially the sural nerve), poor healing, infection, bleeding and hematoma formation, wound dehiscence, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and loss

Checkrein Deformity Associated with Intra-Articular Talar Fracture: A Report of Three Cases.

CASES: We present three cases of checkrein deformity associated with intra-articular talar fracture. Two of the cases were secondary to entrapment of the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon between fracture fragments, and one was related to the increased pathway of the FHL tendon around the dislocated talar body. All cases were diagnosed and treated on the day of injury. CONCLUSION: Physicians should suspect the entrapment of the FHL tendon in cases of flexion deformity of the hallux associated with talar fracture. Proper examination of the forefoot when a patient presents with a hindfoot inj
