Time-dependent effects of discrete spatial cues on the planning of directed movements.

The degree of preparation of a motor response varies with the information available regarding the response that will need to be executed and with the time provided to process that information. In experiment 1 we investigated the time-course of processing the information specified by discrete spatial cues regarding the upcoming target of directed movements. For this purpose we varied the number of cues that indicated the possible locations of the target and the duration of the cue period preceding the target. The results showed that the effects of processing the information provided by the cues

Learning to recover weak signals: A two-stage graph-based framework for all-weather RGB-T object detection.

Object detection in complex traffic environments remains challenging due to illumination-induced feature degradation and weak responses from distant small objects. To address these limitations, we propose a two-stage multimodal detection framework that enhances perception under degraded conditions. The first stage employs a Dual-Path Attention Fusion Module (DPAFM) to adaptively integrate RGB and thermal features via learnable gated attention, mitigating modality-specific degradation. The second stage introduces a Hierarchical Attention Graph Neural Network (HA-GNN), which models detection can

Abnormally enhanced temporal correlations of alpha oscillations across multiple timescales in tinnitus patients.

Tinnitus is a phantom auditory perception that occurs without an external stimulus. Increasing evidence suggests that it is associated with abnormal predictive coding, in which overly strong priors may give rise to hallucinatory perception, as proposed by the "strong priors" hypothesis. Neurodynamic analysis, by characterizing the temporal evolution of brain activity, can further test the "strong priors" hypothesis in tinnitus, specifically whether tinnitus patients' brain activity is more influenced by past activity. However, the neurodynamic characteristics of tinnitus remain poorly understo

An integrated tiny-YOLO v3 and Q-iteration framework for stable, energy-efficient autonomous navigation of quadruped robots on AMB82-mini microcontrollers.

The deployment of advanced artificial intelligence, specifically deep learning (DL) for perception and reinforcement learning (RL) for control, on ultra-low-power, microcontroller-based quadruped robots presents significant challenges. A system-level engineering approach is presented, integrating these computationally intensive methodologies. Central to this is an object detection module, powered by a lightweight Deep Neural Network (DNN), specifically a Tiny-YOLOv3 model, running on an AMB82-Mini microcontroller. The robot’s perception capabilities are provided by the AMB82-Mini, while its re

Decoding Cross-Modal Haptic Neural Coupling Through EEG-LSTM Spatiotemporal Modeling for Vibration-Roughness Interaction.

Haptic feedback is crucial for enhancing virtual immersion, but a neural coding mechanism that correlates the vibration frequency with surface roughness in haptic substitution remains unknown, which hinders the development of tribologically driven haptic interfaces. To address this limitation, this study models cross-modal neural coupling between mechanical vibrations and roughness systematically through double-blind experiments, event-related potential analysis, and electroencephalography (EEG) space-time modeling based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) method. By dynamically extracting th

Research on the safety risks of microwave irradiation on motion balance perception in electric power environments.

To the microwave irradiation safety hazards caused by the co-construction of towers in smart grids, this paper investigates the effects of microwave irradiation in the power environment on the biological motion balance perception function. Firstly, simulation of microwave signals in the electric power environment, i.e., low-frequency harmonics and high-frequency carriers, were realized by signal modulation and applied in four types of behavior testing scenarios. Then, determining rats as target organisms to replace workers and randomly dividing into groups in proportion: open field, rotating r

Negative emotions reduce sensorimotor cortex activity during proprioceptive modulation of rolandic ∼20HZ beta rhythm in typically developing children and those with neurodevelopmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: The Rolandic ∼20-Hz beta rhythm of the sensorimotor cortex is associated with motor function and perception. However, the modulation of this rhythm by different emotional stimuli is an innovative area of research. AIMS: This study aims at investigating the impact of affective pictures (positive, negative, and neutral) on the proprioceptive modulation of the Rolandic ∼20 Hz beta rhythm in typically developing children and children with neurodevelopmental disorders (i.e. cerebral palsy and autism). METHODS AND PROCEDURES: EEG was recorded while participants experienced passive wris

Neuropsychological monitoring of current acoustic therapies as alternative treatment of chronic tinnitus.

At present, the majority of the top tinnitus treatments is based on sound. Sound-based therapies may become highly effective when the right patient at the correct time and the appropriate context is selected. The investigation presented here attempts to compare sound therapies based on music, retraining, neuromodulation, and binaural sounds in line with (1) neuro-audiology assessments and (2) psychological evaluations. Sound-based therapies were applied in 76 volunteers with tinnitus for 60 days. The neuro-audiology assessment was based on the estimation of the approximate entropy of the elect

Taste acuity of obese adolescents and changes in food neophobia and food preferences during a weight reduction session.

The relationship between taste acuity and food neophobia, food familiarity and liking has been studied in the context of a residential weight reduction session (WRS; mean duration: 10 months) in 39 obese adolescents. Taste acuity was assessed using recognition thresholds for sucrose, citric acid, sodium chloride and 6-n propylthiouracil (PROP) and supra-threshold perceived intensities for sucrose, sodium chloride and PROP. Food neophobia was assessed by using the food neophobia scale at the beginning and at the end of the WRS. At these time points we used also a food familiarity and liking que

Four-month-old infants' sensitivity to binocular and kinetic information for three-dimensional-object shape.

4-month-old infants were tested for sensitivity to kinetic and binocular information for 3-dimensional-object shape. The study included 2 tests: a test for sensitivity to binocular disparity and a shape perception test. The disparity sensitivity test used a preferential looking procedure developed by Held, Birch, and Gwiazda. On the basis of the results of this test, infants were assigned to disparity-sensitive and disparity-insensitive groups. In the shape perception test, a "transfer-across-depth-cues" method was employed. Infants were habituated to a rotating object whose shape was specifie

FOR: Point Cloud Outlier Removal Based on Fuzzy Theory and Informativeness and Its Application to 3D Object Detection.

LiDAR is widely used in autonomous driving. Although LiDAR point cloud data can provide stable and reliable information about the environment, it also faces the problem of a huge amount of data. One of the reasons is that point cloud data contains a large amount of noise and outliers. Outlier removal of point clouds can reduce the impact of these disturbances and improve the quality of the point cloud, but it will inevitably eliminate some valid points, which affects subsequent perception tasks. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a fuzzy outlier removal (FOR) method based on fuzz

Impact of Frequency Mismatch and Modiolar Proximity on Speech Perception in Single-sided Deafness Patients Implanted With Perimodiolar Cochlear Electrodes.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the impact of frequency mismatch and electrode proximity to the modiolus on speech perception in patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) implanted with perimodiolar electrodes (PMEs). We aimed to determine whether frequency mismatch or electrode positioning more strongly predicts speech outcomes, and whether these associations change over time. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 34 SSD patients implanted at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital between 2014 and 2022 was analyzed. Frequency mismatch was calculated using the Stakhovskaya spiral ganglion m

Perceptual Distortions in Aided Hearing-Impaired Listeners: Psychophysical Evidence of Excessive Loudness Growth and Altered Timbre Representation.

Hearing aid users often report that some everyday sounds are abnormally intrusive or salient. This issue may stem from distorted coding of sound features due to peripheral impairments and/or hearing aid processing. This study investigates whether aided hearing-impaired (aHI) listeners experience (1) abnormal loudness processing and (2) distorted timbre perception, both of which may contribute to this problem. In Experiment 1, we measured loudness functions using sounds varying in four timbre dimensions (brightness, spectral flux, attack time, roughness) in normal-hearing (NH) and aHI listeners

Different neurocognitive controls modulate obstacle avoidance through pregnancy.

Understanding why falls during pregnancy occur at over 25% rate over gestation has clinical impacts on the health of pregnant individuals. Attention, proprioception, and perception of the environment are required to prevent trips and falls. This research aimed to understand how the changes to these neurocognitive processes control obstacle avoidance through gestation. Seventeen pregnant participants were tested five times in 6-week intervals. Participants walked an obstacle course (OC), and we analyzed the crossings over obstacles that were set to 10% of participants' body height. Participants

From musk to body odor: Decoding olfaction through genetic variation.

The olfactory system combines input from multiple receptor types to represent odor information, but there are few explicit examples relating olfactory receptor (OR) activity patterns to odor perception. To uncover these relationships, we performed genome-wide scans on odor-perception phenotypes for ten odors in 1000 Han Chinese and validated results for six of these odors in an ethnically diverse population (n = 364). In both populations, consistent with previous studies, we replicated three previously reported associations (β-ionone/OR5A1, androstenone/OR7D4, cis-3-hexen-1-ol/OR2J3 LD-band),

Transcutaneous auricular VNS applied to experimental pain: A paired behavioral and EEG study using thermonociceptive CO2 laser.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous auricular Vagal Nerve Stimulation (taVNS) is a non-invasive neurostimulation technique with potential analgesic effects. Several studies based on subjective behavioral responses suggest that taVNS modulates nociception differently with either pro-nociceptive or anti-nociceptive effects. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize how taVNS alters pain perception, by investigating its effects on event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by different types of spinothalamic and lemniscal somatosensory stimuli, combined with quantitative sensory testing (detection thresh
