OBJECTIVE: To identify differentially expressed lumican in scleral tissue of eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and high myopia (HM).
METHODS: Total RNA was isolated from scleral tissue of cadaveric eyes derived from normal donors, patient's eyes with diagnosed glaucoma and high myopia who accepted trabeculectomy. RNA was amplified, RT-PCR was used to measure the levels of mRNA. The ratio of the electrophoresis strips'gray scale values of the β-actin over the lumican gene was obtained for ANOVA analysis.

Most glaucoma surgical procedures are less successful in aphakic or pseudophakic eyes. The authors reviewed 91 consecutive initial glaucoma procedures in aphakic patients from 1979 to 1986 to determine successful outcomes and complications. Argon laser trabeculoplasty was performed in 33 eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma whose intraocular pressures were poorly controlled on medical therapy. PURPOSE: Bleb leaks after trabeculectomy with antimetabolites can be recalcitrant to therapy. Peribleb autologous blood injections are a moderately successful new treatment modality for such leaks. However, it is unclear what mechanism the injections work to achieve leak resolution.
