BACKGROUND: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) compromises vision development in infants after cataract surgery and lead to amblyopia. To observe the effects of curcumin on PCO in infant rabbits, curcumin was injected under the capaule and into the anterior chamber during phacoemulsification.

Patients without a spleen are susceptible for overwhelming sepsis with Streptococcus pneumoniae. We investigated the relative contribution of the pneumococcal capsule in the reduced host defense after splenectomy. We described a pilot study using Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) aiming the assessment of small bowel in Behçet's disease (BD). Ten patients with BD and abdominal complaints underwent VCE with Given Pillcam SB (Given Imaging Ltd., Yoqneam). VCE revealed small bowel lesions in all ten subjects. Five patients had active symptoms of BD while five others had clinically inactive disease. Jejune was the most frequently affected GI segment being involved in eight cases, four from each group. We suggest that small bowel involvement may be frequent in BD patients, even in the absence of oral ulcerations.

A case of cryptococcosis due to capsule-deficient Cryptococcus is presented, in which culturing of the clinical specimen and tests for capsular antigen in cerebrospinal fluid and serum were negative. The histopathological techniques evaluated were hematoxylin-eosin, Grocott methenamine silver, Mayers mucicarmine and Fontana-Masson. The diagnosis of cryptococcosis due to capsule-deficient Cryptococcus was confirmed by means of the Fontana-Masson technique and by direct immunofluorescence. Reduction of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery has been achieved since the general acceptance of posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation 30 years ago.
