Modeling wind erosion susceptibility of Eastern Iran using machine learning.

Wind erosion and dust storms pose significant environmental and socio-economic threats to Iran's drylands, driven by both natural processes and human activities. This study addresses a critical gap by employing advanced machine learning (ML) techniques to generate high-resolution spatial susceptibility maps for wind erosion in the highly vulnerable eastern and northeastern regions of Iran. We evaluated ten distinct ML models using a comprehensive set of environmental predictors including climatic, soil, topographic, and geological variables to identify areas most prone to erosion. Our results

Comprehensive assessment of environmental and economic impacts of the entire EU waste management system.

This study presents a comprehensive model that quantifies environmental and economic impacts across the entire EU27 waste management system using Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Costing. Addressing a crucial gap in official statistics, this model evaluates waste from both collected and generated perspectives, providing insights into the significant portion of waste (approximately 171 Mt annually) classified as mixed waste (also commonly referred to as "mixed residual waste" or "residual waste"). Results demonstrate that assessing waste from both perspectives effectively identifies ineffic

Impact of elevated carbon dioxide and temperature on crop yield: A study of autonomous and nonautonomous systems.

Agricultural crops are vital for human survival, forming the backbone of global food supply. However, the rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) level and the increasing temperature relative to the pre-industrial level are poised to impact the yields of essential staple food crops significantly. In this research, we propose and analyze a nonlinear mathematical model to investigate the effects of elevated CO2 and temperature on crop yield. Our model assumes that rising CO2 levels elevate the global average temperature, and the surface temperature initially boosts the growth rate of crops until

Food security in Roman Palmyra (Syria) in light of paleoclimatological evidence and its historical implications.

Food security in ancient urban centers is often discussed but rarely formally modelled. Despite its location in an inhospitable desert where food production is a constant challenge ancient Palmyra grew from a small oasis settlement in to a major geopolitical player. Here, we present a spatially explicit reconstruction of the land use and agricultural yield expectations of its hinterland determining the maximum feasible population of the city. Coupling the hinterland carrying capacity model with palaeoclimatic data allowed us to track changes in the food security of the city in the face of chan

Reconciling the climate and ozone response to the 1257 CE Mount Samalas eruption.

The 1257 CE eruption of Mount Samalas (Indonesia) is the source of the largest stratospheric injection of volcanic gases in the Common Era. Sulfur dioxide emissions produced sulfate aerosols that cooled Earth's climate with a range of impacts on society. The coemission of halogenated species has also been speculated to have led to wide-scale ozone depletion. Here we present simulations from HadGEM3-ES, a fully coupled Earth system model, with interactive atmospheric chemistry and a microphysical treatment of sulfate aerosol, used to assess the chemical and climate impacts from the injection of

Spatial analysis and risk mapping of Fasciola hepatica infection in dairy herds in Ireland.

Fasciolosis is generally a subclinical infection of dairy cows and can cause marked economic losses. This study investigated the prevalence and spatial distribution of fasciolosis in dairy cow herds in Ireland using an in-house antibodydetection enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay applied to bulk tank milk (BTM) samples collected during the autumn of 2012. A total of 5,116 BTM samples were collected from 4,602 different herds, with 514 farmers submitting BTM samples in two consecutive months. Analysis of the BTM samples showed that 82% (n = 3,764) of the dairy herds had been exposed to Fasciola

Remote sensing of climatic anomalies and West Nile virus incidence in the northern Great Plains of the United States.

The northern Great Plains (NGP) of the United States has been a hotspot of West Nile virus (WNV) incidence since 2002. Mosquito ecology and the transmission of vector-borne disease are influenced by multiple environmental factors, and climatic variability is an important driver of inter-annual variation in WNV transmission risk. This study applied multiple environmental predictors including land surface temperature (LST), the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and actual evapotranspiration (ETa) derived from Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products to establish

Family relational factors in pediatric depression and asthma: pathways of effect.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested a multilevel biobehavioral family model proposing that negative family emotional climate contributes to child depressive symptoms, which in turn contribute to asthma disease severity. Parent-child relational insecurity is proposed as a mediator. METHOD: Children with asthma (N = 112; ages 7-18; 55% male) reported relational security, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Parent(s) reported demographics, asthma history and symptoms, and family emotional expression. Asthma diagnosis was confirmed by medical history provided by parent and child together, clinical evaluat

Plant diversity's positive effect on soil respiration diminishes with increasing productivity in global forests.

Plant diversity is essential for regulating ecosystem functions, yet its global-scale relationship with soil respiration, a critical component of the carbon cycle, remains unexplored. While plant productivity modulates ecosystem processes, understanding how plant species richness regulates soil respiration across net primary production gradients is key to predicting carbon-climate feedbacks. Here, we integrate two global plant species richness datasets (tree species richness and vascular plant species richness, including woody and non-woody plants) with a global soil respiration dataset estima

Global rice paddy greenhouse gas emissions have doubled over the past six decades driven by area expansion and intensified residue incorporation.

Rice paddies are essential to global food security but are significant contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly methane (CH4), a potent driver of climate change. Here, using three independent approaches-a data-driven model, a process-based ecosystem model and a meta-analysis of over 1,255 field experiment sites-we estimate that net GHG emissions from global rice paddies approximately doubled from 1961-1980 to 2001-2020, driven primarily by a 52% increase in soil CO2 emissions and a 44% rise in soil CH4 emissions. For the most recent decade (2010s), global rice paddies emitt

Climate-stressed crop mycobiomes as pre-harvest sentinels of human mycotoxin exposure: an AI-enabled One Health framework linking dysbiosis, exposomics, and toxicopathology.

Climate change is altering the conditions under which crop-associated fungi colonize plants and produce mycotoxins. Current control relies on both pre-harvest management and post-harvest testing; however, field-level fungal-community changes are rarely used to guide where and when testing should be intensified. This Review critically compares evidence linking weather and crop stress, fungal-community composition, toxigenic strain activity, contamination during harvest and storage, human biomarkers, and organ-specific effects. On this basis, we propose the Crop Mycobiome-Exposome-Toxicopatholog

Climate change influences on the potential geographic distribution of the invasive Asian longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis.

The Asian long-horned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann, 1901, is the competent vector for severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV). Haemaphysalis longicornis originated mainly in eastern Asia and invaded many areas like Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific islands, and was recently introduced to eastern parts of the USA. This species is characterized by high adaptability to a wide range of temperatures and can reproduce parthenogenically under stressful conditions. Migratory birds are important hosts of H. longicornis and are thought to be responsible for its unexpec

Analysis of psychological and social factors affecting climate change adaptation and mitigation behaviors among Iranian rice farmers.

Rice is a vital staple crop, feeding billions globally. However, conventional rice farming practices, especially traditional irrigation techniques, are significant contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Flooded irrigation, in particular, creates anaerobic conditions that facilitate methane production-a GHG significantly more potent in terms of global warming potential compared to carbon dioxide. As a result, rice cultivation is a key driver of climate change (CC). Addressing these environmental challenges while maintaining sustainable productivity requires the adoption of climate-smar

A European monsoon-like climate in a warmhouse world.

The middle Eocene warmhouse period (45 million years ago) featured atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations equivalent to those projected under high future emission scenarios. Seasonal- to weather timescale climate reconstructions from this period can provide critical insight into the impact of Anthropogenic warming on intra-annual variability in temperature and precipitation. Here, we combine daily-scale reconstructions of the evolution of temperature and the water cycle in western Europe based on stable oxygen and clumped isotope analyses on the fastest-growing gastropod known in the fossil

Rift Valley fever dynamics in Senegal: a project for pro-active adaptation and improvement of livestock raising management.

The multi-disciplinary French project "Adaptation à la Fiévre de la Vallée du Rift" (AdaptFVR) has concluded a 10-year constructive interaction between many scientists/partners involved with the Rift Valley fever (RVF) dynamics in Senegal. The three targeted objectives reached were (i) to produce--in near real-time--validated risk maps for parked livestock exposed to RVF mosquitoes/vectors bites; (ii) to assess the impacts on RVF vectors from climate variability at different time-scales including climate change; and (iii) to isolate processes improving local livestock management and animal hea

Co-occurrence probabilities between mosquito vectors of West Nile and Eastern equine encephalitis viruses using Markov Random Fields (MRFcov).

Mosquito vectors of eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) and West Nile virus (WNV) in the USA reside within broad multi-species assemblages that vary in spatial and temporal composition, relative abundances and vector competence. These variations impact the risk of pathogen transmission and the operational management of these species by local public health vector control districts. However, most models of mosquito vector dynamics focus on single species and do not account for co-occurrence probabilities between mosquito species pairs across environmental gradients. In this investigation, w
