The hypothesis that treatment with antilymphocytic serum (ALS) can provoke latent virus infections has been investigated. In adult mice infections with sublethal doses of LCM virus usually result in the development of immunity to the virus and at the same time to a prolonged latent infection. In the experiments described an intensive treatment with large doses of ALS was given to mice which had recovered from LCM virus infection. At the beginning of the treatment the mice had high titers of complement-fixing antibodies in their blood and no detectable virus. The data presented show that in spi

The presence of circulating immunocomplexes (CIC) was evaluated in several collagen diseases and in a control group of 100 healthy individuals. Three methods were used for their detection: binding to C1q in solid phase, binding to conglutinin in solid phase, and measurement of the serum capacity to solubilize an experimental immunocomplex. In the group of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) significant differences were found for the three techniques (p less than 0.001) and also for activity (p less than 0.001). The most sensitive method was binding to C1q. The sensitivity of the t

Coccidioidomycosis is most frequently diagnosed serologically, and the quantitative test for complement-fixing antibodies is considered prognostically useful. Because complement-fixing antibody testing is complex, labor-intensive, and poorly standardized, an enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) alternative would be attractive. In this report, we restrict the complement-fixing, antibody-binding domain to a 200-amino-acid recombinant peptide of the known antigen. Over-lapping truncations of this peptide do not bind complement-fixing antibodies, suggesting that the responsible epitope(s) are conform

Cases of tick-borne rickettsiosis in Siberia and the Far East are associated with R. sibirica, the causative agent of Siberian tick typhus (STT). In connection with a sharp reduction in the nomenclature of diagnostic products and an increase in the spectrum of species of founding rickettsiae on the territory of Russia, new approaches to the laboratory verification of diagnoses are needed. We present an evaluation of the effectiveness of serological research methods (complement fixation test, indirect immunofluorescence, and ELISA) in patients with tick-borne rickettsioses in areas of different

Six serological assays for the diagnosis of ovine brucellosis, due to Brucella melitensis were evaluated. Reference serum samples from sheep of known B. melitensis infection status (n=118) were assessed using the Rose Bengal test (RBT), complement fixation test (CFT) and four commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), including two indirect ELISAs (iELISAs), one competitive ELISA (cELISA) and one blocking ELISA (bELISA). The highest differential positive rates (DPR) were obtained with the cELISA and bELISA, while the lowest DPR was estimated using iELISAs. A latent class analysis

Q fever is a rare illness in the Southern California desert. During the past 34 years only 6 patients have been diagnosed with the disease at the Eisenhower Medical Center, a referral center for much of the desert and surrounding mountains. In all but 2 instances, Q fever was identified in patients who have been in contact with imported domestic sheep who are brought to the desert to graze and lamb in the fall and winter. The sheep are sent back to Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana in the spring. With frequent infection by Coxiella burnetii established in domestic sheep, we elected to study the prev

Although myocardial infarction is most often the manifestation of epicardial coronary artery disease, Chagas heart disease due to chronic Trypanasome Cruzi infection may present with a syndrome of chest pain and elevations in markers of cardiac myonecrosis. In the setting of an increasingly diverse global population and immigration of peoples from endemic areas of Trypanasome Cruzi, it is important to be aware of the myriad cardiac manifestations of Chagas disease.

Serologic testing for complement-fixing antibodies to Coccidioides immitis is commonly employed to assist in the diagnosis and management of this infection, but its usefulness in an HIV-coinfected population is unknown. In this study we reviewed all the mycologically or histologically proven cases of disseminated C. immitis infection after 1982. Disseminated C. immitis and proven HIV infection were present in eight patients. We performed serum complement-fixing antibody titers on all eight patients, six of whom gave positive tests, while two patients (25%) gave repeatedly negative results desp
