BACKGROUND: In steady state conditions intestinal immune homeostasis is maintained by a sophisticated bidirectional dialogue between the microbiota and the intestinal immune system. The objective of this study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of infection with HIV, herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), and Treponema pallidum (TP) in a Kosovarian population. A cross-sectional study was performed in Peja, Kosovo, from January to March 2005, among 1285 persons recruited at the Peja Hospital. Breast cancer resistance protein, BCRP, is a multidrug resistance protein that is highly expressed in the human placenta. In cancer tissues, this protein actively extrudes a wide variety of chemically and structurally unrelated chemotherapeutic drugs and other compounds. Listeria monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular pathogen that is able to invade the central nervous system causing meningoencephalitis and brain abscesses.
