After epicutaneous patch testing, a 43-year-old non-atopic white female with eyelid dermatitis was found to be allergic to yellow iron oxide used as a dye in her mascara. Yellow iron oxide, also known as limonite or yellow ochre, is a common cosmetic dye which has not previously been described as a source of contact dermatitis. Formulation of mascara as well as classification of naturally occurring iron oxides are discussed.

The classic features of childhood dermatomyositis include muscle weakness, elevated muscle enzymes, and characteristic abnormal muscle biopsy and electromyography. Paramount to the diagnosis are cutaneous dermatoses that include a heliotrope rash and Gottron's papules. Rarely, a photo-sensitive dermatosis may occur. A recurrent photoexacerbated dermatoses can be an initial sign of occult childhood dermatomyositis.

The proliferation of house and garden plants, some of them highly sensitizing, produced by the general improvement of the standard of living, is causing an increase in the number of cases of contact dermatitis from plants with both irritative and allergic mechanisms. Association between dermatitis herpetiformis and gluten enteropathy is well established. An increased incidence of malignant disease has been reported in patients with coeliac disease and also in dermatitis herpetiformis. Linear IgA dermatitis herpetiformis has a much lower incidence of associated enteropathy compared with patients with papillary dermatitis herpetiformis, but the risk of malignancy could be the same. We report a case of linear IgA dermatitis herpetiformis in which immunoblastic sarcoma subsequently developed.

We describe a long term study of 76 patients with dermatitis herpetiformis. Unlike patients with coeliac disease, where the peak incidence was during the first and fourth decades, no dermatitis herpetiformis patients presented in the first decade; also, there was a male preponderance in dermatitis herpetiformis which contrasts with the excess of females in coeliac disease. In both man and animals, cell-mediated immunity diminishes with advanced age. Because poison ivy is a very common allergy, we evaluated age-associated differences in the contact allergic reaction to Rhus. Oleoresin patch tests were applied to two age cohorts (18-25 versus 65-84) each of 14 healthy white subjects. In the elderly, the allergic reaction developed more slowly, the inflammatory response at peak was greatly diminished and the dermatitis lasted longer and seemed to be more pruritic.

A pityriasis rosea-like eruption developed in two acne patients receiving isotretinoin and gradually resolved once the dosage was reduced. Histologically the lesions, which were characterized by psoriasiform hyperplasia, bore no resemblance to pityriasis rosea. We believe the eruptions were a side effect of isotretinoin therapy.

Systemic absorption of metal or metallic salts from dental and orthopedic surgical implants can produce a cutaneous allergic dermatitis in susceptible individuals. Mercury, nickel and cobalt are the most common metals to elicit such systemic allergic reactions from chronic internal exposure. A case is presented of a generalized eczematoid dermatitis apparently caused by allergy to chromium liberated from a metal dental plate.

We report an unusual manifestation of dermatitis herpetiformis in four patients. Three of them fulfill all the criteria for dermatitis herpetiformis: micro-abscesses of polymorphs in the upper papillary dermis, granular IgA deposit on IF examination, gluten-sensitive enteropathy, HLA B8.
