BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis is an ever more frequent disease in children; its etiology is unknown, although a genetic predisposition along with environment factors could be the origin.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of atopic dermatitis among school-children and the main associated risk factors.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A randomized, stratified and conglomerated sample of 6 to 12 year-old school-children was obtained. Their parents answered the main ISAAC questionnaire, to which some variables were added, such as family and hereditary history, tobacco smoking exposure and nutritional

BACKGROUND: Few data suggest oat-based cosmetics may cause allergic reactions in atopic subjects, especially when sensitized to cereals.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the risk of immediate and delayed allergic reactions to repeated and maximized applications (RMA) of oat-containing cosmetics and oat extracts and their tolerance in cereal-sensitized atopic adults.
METHODS: Open-label pilot study in 12 cereal-sensitized atopic adults over 45 days. Open tests and RMA were performed with Rhealba oat-containing cosmetics at day 0 (D0) and D10, and from D10 to D31. Patch and prick tests were performed a

BACKGROUND: While allergy to food proteins is almost exclusively found in association with atopy, it has been our experience that contact allergy to some contact allergens/haptens with both cutaneous and gastrointestinal exposures is reduced in atopic dermatitis (AD) patients as a group.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the contact allergy rates of two classes of antimicrobial haptens, one with both cutaneous and gastrointestinal exposures (quinolines) and one with only significant cutaneous exposure (aminoglycosides), with respect to the presence or absence of AD.
METHODS: Contact allergy rates to neom

BACKGROUND: Superantigens induce skin inflammatory responses in atopic dermatitis, which is commonly associated with Staphylococcus aureus infection. T cells activated in vitro by superantigens become steroid resistant. The objective was to assess the superantigen profiles of S. aureus isolates from patients with steroid-resistant atopic dermatitis.
METHODS: We compared the superantigen-production capability of S. aureus isolates from 78 patients with steroid-resistant atopic dermatitis (group 1) with that of 30 vaginal isolates from healthy women (group 2) and 22 isolates from a general popu

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT) is one of the main treatments for atopic dermatitis in dogs, but it often requires additional treatments such as antibacterial and antifungal therapy for secondary bacterial and yeast infections, or antipruritic drugs to control the clinical signs or treat the adverse effects of the immunotherapy. Twenty-seven dogs enrolled in a study of ASIT were clinically assessed four times over a period of nine months; their requirement for treatment for secondary bacterial and yeast infections, for the administration of glucocorticoids as additional antipruritic the

32 patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), complicated by pyoderma, were treated with purified staphylococcal toxoid (PST). Changes in clinical and laboratory characteristics in the course of treatment were evaluated. PST was shown to produce a satisfactory therapeutic effect, arresting the symptoms of local staphylococcal infection. An increase in the levels of alpha- and gamma-interferons and decreased content of CD25+ lymphocytes were found. Thus prospects appear for using this preparation as an interferon inductor, as well a for the immunotherapy of AD patients sensitized to Staphylococcus a

This study aimed to consolidate evidence linking vocal cord palsy (VCP) to hypoxic injury, and its pathophysiology, and explore related topographical representations along laryngeal innervation. PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were the databases used. This review adheres to PRISMA guidelines. We included case series or case reports published before December 6, 2023. These studies must document VCP, diagnosed via direct or indirect laryngoscopic evaluation, resulting from hypoxic injury with imaging documentation specifying the level of injury. Screening, review, quality assessment, and extraction w

We used an infrared video camera and video tape recorder system to record and analyze nocturnal scratching in seven patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and three non-itchy healthy controls. The patterns and the locations of scratching were successfully observed. Scratching bouts lasting more than 5 sec were counted, and the summation of the duration of all the scratching bouts (total scratching time, TST) was used as an index of nocturnal scratching. TST in patients with AD turned out to be some hundreds to ten thousands of seconds; the TST in controls was between zero and a hundred seconds.

Food hypersensitivities contribute to disease exacerbation in a sub-group of children with atopic dermatitis (AD). It has been shown that only selected foods are capable of causing clinical reactions when ingested, whereas other foods, to which the patient is equally sensitive by skin-prick testing, may be tolerated. The purpose of this study was to examine the cutaneous late-phase response (LPR) to food antigens in food-allergic patients with AD and to determine if the skin reacted differently to 'relevant foods' (foods eliciting positive skin-prick tests and positive oral challenges) than to

By Southern hybridization using a genomic DNA fragment carrying a human IgE heavy chain constant region gene (C epsilon) as a probe, we analyzed the organization of human C epsilon genes and their flanking regions in 23 atopic dermatitis and 6 senile erythroderma patients with elevated serum IgE levels, and 6 atopic dermatitis patients with normal IgE levels. On Bam HI, Hind III, and Eco RI digestions, we detected three hybridizable fragments containing three human C epsilon genes, C epsilon 1, C epsilon 2, and C epsilon 3, respectively, in all leukocyte DNAs. These fragments were almost ident

Kaposi-Juliusberg's disease is a clinical and very severe complication of atopic dermatitis. Clinical patterns are different enough for the diagnosis of an herpes virus or pox virus infection and the prognosis has been very much improved by recent therapeutics. Three recent observations of pustulosis led the authors to study particular immunologic properties of these children, and to explain why only a few atopic patients are concerned with pustulosis. From these observations a prognosis might be established for the future because great atopic adults show the same immune features as young chil

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is pathogenetically dependent on cell-mediated immune responses mediated by type 1 T lymphocytes. Atopic dermatitis (AD), in contrast, occurs as a result of sustained activation of type 2 subsets of T cells. Although atopic patients may become sensitized to various contact allergens, little is known about the influence of atopy on delayed-type hypersensitivity.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the in vitro responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) to nickel stimulation in groups of atopic and nonatopic patients with patch test-verified nick

It is well known that the seborrheic areas including the face and neck of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) are frequently affected after adolescence. Malassezia furfur (MF), a lipophilic yeast and a normal habitat of seborrheic areas, has been thought to be one of the most important factors in provoking face and neck lesions of AD. In the present study, we assessed serum levels of anti-MF IgE antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (AlaSTAT method) in 123 adolescent and adult AD patients and evaluated the correlations between levels of anti-MF IgE and those of total IgE and some ot

Recent investigations have indicated a role for antigen-specific T lymphocytes in the local skin immunity. The cutaneous lymphocyte antigen (CLA) is supposed to represent a skin-homing receptor for T cells. Inhibition experiments with specific monoclonal antibody demonstrate that CLA participates in selective transendothelial migration of memory/effector T cells in vitro by interaction with E-selectin on endothelial cell layers after activation with proinflammatory cytokines. In addition, the receptor-ligand pairs VLA-4/VCAM-1 and LFA-1/ICAM-1 are involved in this process. Moreover, only CLA+,
