Reversible changes in nuclear and cell surface topography in cells exposed to collagenase and EDTA.

Rabbit auricular chondrocytes, SIRC cells, human fibroblasts, and HeLa cells were cultivated in vitro and the fine structural effects of various detachment procedures studied. Treatment with collagenase, trypsin, and trypsin-EDTA caused scalloping of the nuclear envelope, accumulation of phagolysosomes, and an increase in the number of cell surface extensions. Collagenase-EDTA evoked a marked deformation of the nuclei with formation of numerous deep indentations and a redistribution of heterochromatin. Similarly, the cell surface became extensively folded and the vacuolation of the cytoplasm w

Ultrasound-Guided Greater Auricular Nerve Block: A Pilot Study for Pain Management in Post-Auricular Injection.

BACKGROUND: Post-auricular procedures in aesthetic surgery, including hyaluronic acid filler correction for "lying ears," otoplasty, and cartilage harvest, traditionally require direct local infiltration. This technique causes significant pain and tissue distortion that may compromise surgical precision. The greater auricular nerve (GAN) provides primary sensory innervation to the post-auricular region and represents an accessible target for regional blockade. This study evaluates the efficacy of ultrasound-guided GAN block for providing anesthesia to the post-auricular region. METHODS: This

Effects of topical vildagliptin versus triamcinolone acetonide on experimentally induced hypertrophic scars in a rabbit model.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of topical vildagliptin on experimentally induced hypertrophic scars (HTSs) in a rabbit model. A total of 40 healthy male albino rabbits were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 8): healthy control (CTRL), untreated induced HTS model (HTS model), vehicle-received (VEH), 0.1% triamcinolone acetonide-treated (TAC), and 3% vildagliptin-treated (VIL). On day 0, four full-thickness wounds extending to the cartilage were created on the ventral surface of each rabbit ear using an 8-mm biopsy punch. On day 30, topical treatment was initiated on the new

There are no guidelines for prophylactic antibiotic use after fishhook … ite varied, with most occurring in the finger/thumb (78.4%) and scalp (5.9%). One case involved the ear cartilage. The most common removal technique was the advance and cut method (52.9%). Four patients had an immunocompromising condition (eg, diabetes). ABCC6 and ANK regulate extracellular homeostasis of pyrophosphate and citrate and affect mineral deposition in bones and soft connective tissues.

ABCC6 and ANK are integral membrane proteins involved in the efflux of specific organic anions. ABCC6, primarily expressed in the liver, reg … ic calcification in double mutants, far exceeding either single knockout, affecting muzzle skin and ear cartilage. Oral citrate was bioavailable and, at high doses, prevented soft tissue calcification in Abcc6 -/- mice, suggesting a systemic protective role. In bone, ANK was essential for incorporating both PPi and citrate, while ABCC6 mainly affected PPi. ANK …

Ear canal reconstruction in mastoid obliteration surgery for cholesteatoma or radical cavity: a review of the literature.

PURPOSE: There is no gold standard for canal wall reconstruction following its removal in mastoid obliteration surgery. This review aims to provide insight into the current state of the art on canal wall reconstruction, highlighting both successes and ongoing issues. METHODS: Literature review (PubMed, Embase) of recent (≤ 15 years) articles describing mastoid obliteration surgery with canal wall reconstruction in cholesteatoma or radical cavity patients. The data extracted were the reconstruction techniques and surgical outcomes as procedure safety, cholesteatoma recurrence, postoperative co

Endoscopic type 1 tympanoplasty; a composite graft technique for subtotal and total perforations.

OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate feasibility of performing endoscopic transcanal type 1 tympanoplasty in total and subtotal perforations, using an underlay technique that minimizes the risk of anterior medialization of the graft. Compare audiometric and clinical outcomes of this technique with our series of endoscopic tympanoplasty with classical underlay grafts, and with previously reported outcomes of microscopic post-auricular lateral graft tympanoplasty and other transcanal techniques. METHODS: We describe a surgical technique using an L-shaped cartilage and its perichondrium, with exclusive transc

Total Endoscopic Transcanal Cartilage Myringoplasty: A Prospective Study.

Introduction  Middle ear surgeries, including myringoplasty, have increasingly utilized endoscopes as an adjunct to or as a replacement for the operative microscope. Objectives  The objective of the present study was to evaluate the graft uptake rate and to evaluate the hearing results. Methods  This is a prospective study. We have analyzed 139 patients who underwent surgery for chronic otitis media (COM) of the mucosal type. All of the surgeries were performed exclusively under total endoscopic transcanal approach using tragal cartilage as graft, underlay technique. We have evaluated the post

The auricle's cavum conchae composite graft in nasal reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Autologous transplants consisting of skin and cartilage, so-called composite grafts (CGs), are useful in nasal reconstruction of multilayered defects. A CG from the auricle's cavum conchae serves both functional and esthetic demands. This article outlines the indications and the requirements of the CG, making special considerations to improve wound healing, and discusses our results in consideration with recent publications. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study assessing the functional and esthetic long-term results in the donor and recipient site is presented. RESULTS: Be

The utilization of three-dimensional imaging and three-dimensional-printed model in autologous microtia reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: The use of three-dimensional (3D) technology helps surgeons in performing autologous microtia reconstruction due to more accurate measurements and a better precision template model. However, the technical aspects of using a 3D imaging and 3D-printed model and the difference in outcomes postoperatively remain poorly reviewed. PURPOSE: This systematic review aimed to provide the current evidence of the benefit and technical aspects of using 3D technology in autologous microtia reconstruction. METHOD: A systematic literature search was conducted across multiple databases: Medline, E

Prediction of difficult laryngoscopy in school-aged patients with microtia.

BACKGROUND: Children with microtia may experience difficult laryngoscopy because the ear and the mandible develop from the first and second bronchial arches and clefts. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, we enrolled 166 patients (6-14 years old) with microtia scheduled for auricular reconstruction with autologous costal cartilage framework. Airway of the subjects was assessed preoperatively with the Modified Mallampati classification, Thyromental distance, Interincisor gap, Forward protrusion of the mandible and Horizontal length of the mandible. Assessment of MRI safety issues for stainless steel sutures used for microtia reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Potential magnetic resonance imaging issues for stainless steel sutures used for microtia reconstruction could be clinically significant for safety and diagnostic yield considerations. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to assess magnetic resonance issues (magnetic field interactions, heating, and artifacts) for different types of stainless steel sutures used for microtia reconstruction. METHODS: Small gauge, commonly used stainless steel sutures from four different manufacturers (5/0 Steelex, Aesculap/B, Braun Medical, Inc.; Nagata 38 Gauge Microtia Wire, Bear Med
