BACKGROUND: Nigeria carries the highest burden and diversity of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in sub-Saharan Africa and is preparing to scale up its efforts to control/eliminate these diseases. To achieve this it will require a range of internal technical support and expertise for mapping, monitoring and evaluating, operational research and documenting its success. In order to begin to evaluate this potential in Nigeria, this study collated and analysed information for lymphatic filariasis (LF), onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths (STH), which are currently bein

Lymphatic filariasis (LF), a morbid vector-borne parasitic infection affects millions in tropical areas. Complete eradication can only be achieved by the development of a potent vaccine. Among the various filarial antigens that have been characterized, antigens Brugia malayi thioredoxin (TRX) and abundant larval transcript (ALT) have produced recognizable level of protection in Jirds, thereby evidenced to be good vaccine candidates. In this study an attempt was made to enhance their immunoprophylactic activity by encapsulating them in natural polysaccharide chitosan forming nanospheres (CN). H

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) caused by Wuchereria bancrofti is present at high prevalence in some parts of Papua New Guinea. However, there has been no rigorous data-based representative assessment of nationwide prevalence of LF. The LF programme has been daunted by the scope of the problem, and progress on mass drug administration (MDA) has been slow and lacking in resources.
METHODS: A systematic literature review identified LF surveys in Papua New Guinea between 1980 and 2011. Results were extracted by location, time period and test used (blood slide, immunochromatographic test (I

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is endemic in Mozambique, where it is caused by Wuchereria bancrofti with Culex quinquefasciatus as the main vector. It affects approximately 10% of the population (2 million) with about 16 million at risk. Prevalence rates in 40 out of 65 districts that together comprise the four endemic provinces Niassa, Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Zambezia were analysed with the aim of elucidating the socio-environmental variables influencing the transmission. The levels of prevalence were divided into six ranks and certain climatic, environmental and social factors were considered i

Successful public-private partnerships for health control have usually included nongovernmental development organisations (NGDOs), and these have long been in the forefront of pinpointing particular social and health issues. The immensely successful control and elimination programmes for onchocerciasis are a case in point. NGDOs were the driving force in early advocacy for onchocerciasis control in West Africa, leading eventually to the remarkably effective and long lasting partnership of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP). With the donation of Mectizan(®), NGDOs were the driving force

Anopheles gambiae s.s mosquitoes are important vectors of lymphatic filariasis (LF) and malaria in Ghana. To better understand their ecological aspects and influence on disease transmission, we examined the spatial distribution of the An. gambiae (M and S) molecular forms and associated environmental factors, and determined their relationship with disease prevalence. Published and current data available on the An. gambiae species in Ghana were collected in a database for analysis, and the study sites were georeferenced and mapped. Using the An. gambiae s.s sites, environmental data were derive

The aim of this review was to assess the methodological quality of cluster randomised controlled trials (CRCT) for the management of tropical parasitic disease published between 1998 and 2007. A literature survey was conducted using Medline for CRCTs of interventions aimed at managing any one of the six major tropical parasitic diseases: malaria, leishmaniasis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis and trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease). Information was extracted from the published articles in order that, for each trial, categorical responses could be made to a pre-specified list

In the present study, methanolic extracts of roots of Vitex negundo L. and extracts of leaves of Vitex negundo L., Ricinus communis L. and Aegle marmelos Corr. were explored for possible antifilarial effect against Brugia malayi microfilariae. It was observed that among the herbal extracts, root extract of Vitex negundo L. and leaves extract of Aegle marmelos Corr. at 100 ng/ml concentration showed complete loss of motility of microfilariae after 48 hr of incubation. Thin layer chromatography of the extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponin and flavonoids in the roots of Vitex negun

To assess the performance of the immunochromatographic test for filariasis, adult Wuchereria bancrofti worms were incubated under different conditions. The tests were strongly positive with incubation fluids from both living and mechanically damaged females. Negative results were observed with incubation fluids from all male worms and from intact dead females.

In 2002, the status of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in the district of Jaboatão, in north-eastern Brazil, was reviewed, 41 years after the first case of the disease was recorded in the area. Current data from Jaboatão were compared with older information from the district that had been published, as official reports on filariasis cases and mosquitoes and as the result of population surveys, between 1948 and 1997. Although the first microfilaria-positive cases were detected in the district in 1959, it was not until 1993 that the national Ministry of Health categorized Jaboatão as an endemic area.

Lymphatic filariasis caused by infection with Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi is endemic in 45 of 77 provinces in The Philippines. To prepare the island of Mindoro for mass treatment using diethylcarbamazine and albendazole, complete census data were collected in rural villages. A sample of individuals selected from each of two adjacent villages was examined for microfilaremia. Microfilariae were detected from thin smears in 34 (13%) of 272 patients examined from the village of Bayanan and 10 (3.4%) of 292 in the village of Mangangan (P < 0.01, by chi-square test). In these villages, th

Since its introduction more than 20 years ago, ivermectin has proved to be one of the most successful therapeutic drugs in veterinary medicine, as well as the basis of one of the most successful public-health programmes of the past century. The drug arose from a unique international collaboration between the public and private sectors. The development process also incorporated the world's first and largest drug-donation programme and involved a unique association between governments, non-governmental organizations and industry. The drug is now being used, free of charge, in two global disease-

Serum and urine samples were randomly collected from residents in two rural areas at different altitudes in Nepal, and were examined for Wuchereria bancrofti antigens and antibodies (IgG4) to filarial antigens, respectively. In Judigaun, located at 900 m in altitude, 25.2% of 238 serum samples were positive for antigen, and 50.8% of 244 urine samples were positive for antibody. The level of IgG4 antibodies was higher among antigen positive individuals than among the antigen negatives. In Kotyang, located at 1100-1300 m, the prevalence of antigenemia was 15.4% of 117 serum samples.

We developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) that detects filaria-specific immunoglobulin G4 antibodies in unconcentrated urine. The ELISA was positive in 87 of 91 (95.6%) urine samples collected from people with Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae, antigen, or both. Of 298 urine samples collected in Thailand, Lao People's Democratic Republic, and Japan, where no human filariasis is known, 295 (99.0%) were negative by ELISA. Various intestinal nematode and fluke infections did not interfere with the ELISA. Urine samples with sodium azide could be kept at 37 degrees C for 4 weeks, a

The tolerance of Onchocerca volvulus-infected individuals to diethylcarbamazine (DEC)-medicated salt (0.33% w/w) was assessed in 1996 in Tanzania in a double-blind placebo-controlled hospital-based trial involving 4 groups, each of 10 adult males. Groups I and II had O. volvulus microfilariae (mf) only, group III had both O. volvulus and Wuchereria bancrofti mf, and group IV had W. bancrofti mf only. Groups I, III and IV received DEC-medicated salt, whereas group II was a control to group I and received normal cooking salt. Medication was given for 10 days. The most pronounced adverse reaction
