Twenty-five patients with fractures of the lower leg treated by closed reduction and plaster fixation were examined an average of 7 years and 8 months after trauma. AIMS: To evaluate short-term clinical and functional outcomes following operative treatment of long bone post-traumatic osteomyelitis (PTOM).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a consecutive cohort of 142 adult patients undergoing operative treatment of long bone PTOM at our Level I trauma center over a 10-year study period. In addition to subjective patient evaluations, surveyed postoperative outcomes included incidence of residual infection, fracture malunion or nonunion, and requirement for limb amputation. All included patients had a minimum follow-up of 12 months postoperatively.

UNLABELLED: The use of arthroscopy in the management of acute traumatic conditions of the foot and ankle has increased in recent years, primarily because of an appreciation of fracture morphology and the utility of reducing the surgical footprint. This article presents an overview of the use of this modality in foot and ankle trauma and presents an anatomical survey of the various fractures where arthroscopic assistance can be of benefit. In addition, a discussion of the seminal articles on this subject is included.

The present study reviews 215 male patients suffering high velocity-high energy injuries of the lower leg or foot caused by war weapons such as missiles, gunshots, and land mines. They were treated in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Gulhane Military Medical Academy (Ankara, Turkey) between November 1993-January 2001. Severe soft-tissue defects requiring flap coverage and associated open bone fractures that were treated 7-21 days (mean, 9.6 days) after the injury were included in the study. Twenty-three of 226 extremities (10.2%) underwent primary below-knee amputation.
