Ameloblastic fibroma (AF) is a rare benign mixed odontogenic tumor, more frequently observed in children and adolescents. It typically develops in the posterior region of the mandible. Radiographically, it appears as a well-defined radiolucent lesion, requiring histological confirmation to differentiate it from other odontogenic tumors. We report the case of an eight-year-old male patient in good general health who presented following an anterior trauma. The extraoral examination was normal, while the intraoral examination revealed the avulsion of tooth 11, a complicated enamel-dentin fracture

BACKGROUND: The os subfibulare is considered a fusion failure of the secondary ossification center or avulsion fracture at the lateral ankle ligament involving the anterior talofibular ligament alone or in combination with the calcaneofibular ligament. The os subfibulare causes symptomatic repetitive ankle sprains; however, asymptomatic forms exist. We aimed to identify the symptomatic factors of os subfibulare using ultrasonography (US).
METHODS: Twenty-one feet of patients who underwent operative treatment for symptomatic os subfibulare and 24 feet of those with asymptomatic os subfibulare

Transient lateral patellar dislocation (TLPD) occurs most often in young active individuals. Although relatively common, they tend to spontaneously reduce and can be difficult to accurately diagnose. The typical pattern of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings following TLPD has been well documented in the literature and are known to frequently result in osteochondral lesions (OCL) in up to 70% of cases. However, the emergence of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as an imaging technique is in its relative infancy and the associated corresponding findings are less well established. We de

INTRODUCTION: Mallet finger injury is defined by disruption of the terminal extensor tendon distal-to-distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint. While in the fingers, it is a relatively common injury, it is a rarely encountered entity when involving the thumb. Various conservative and operative treatment strategies have been reported for the management of mallet thumb with no consensus by clinicians.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 27-year-old right hand dominant man with a left bony mallet thumb injury that occurred while playing hurling. Hurling is traditional Irish sport that is one of the

OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this study was to describe complications in dogs weighing < 20 kg treated for medial patellar luxation and to determine risk factors associated with these complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records were reviewed and cases were grouped based on four techniques of stabilization for the tibial tuberosity transposition (TTT). Variables including animal signalment, clinical presentation, TTT technique, other concurrent surgical techniques and associated complications were investigated. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine the association of the s

Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of Total hip arthroplasty (THA) in treating the hip joint involvement of Psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Methods: From January 2005 to December 2016, a total of 15 PsA patients (20 hip joints) underwent THA in Department of Orthopaedics, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College. All the patients had obvious restriction in daily life before operation. The mean Harris score was 25.2 averagely and the mean total range of the hip joint movement was 39.6° before surgery. Rotator cuff injuries in the pediatric and adolescent population are rare. These injuries are normally caused by an acute event or by repeated microtrauma as a result of poor mechanics during overhead sporting activities. Overall, these injuries account for fewer than 1% of all rotator cuff tears. Physeal injuries, tuberosity avulsions ("rotator cuff equivalents"), and proximal humeral fractures commonly occur in the pediatric population. Traumatic full-thickness rotator cuff ruptures that occur in this age group during contact sports are an extremely uncommon cause of shoulder pain. The rarit

Chondroblastoma has a predilection for the epiphyses or apophyses of long tubular bones. Management of lesions in the proximal tibia is challenging because it is difficult to gain access to intraepiphyseal lesions for completion of curettage. From October 2007 to December 2011, 9 patients with de novo chondroblastoma of the proximal tibia underwent surgery at the authors' institution. All patients initially presented with pain, and 5 patients had limitation of range of motion of the ipsilateral knee. Four lesions abutted the tibial attachment sites of the cruciate ligaments. Surgical procedure

A 20-year-old man suffered the combined axillary and suprascapular nerve palsies associated with scapulothoracic dissociation by motorcycle accident. The dislocated shoulder girdle was reduced and stabilized with osteosynthesis of the fractured clavicle and reattachment of the trapezius avulsed from the scapular spine for removal of continuous traction force to these damaged nerves. Because of no evidence of recovery on manual muscle test and electromyogram, exploration for these nerves was administered 6 weeks after injury. Although neurolysis of both nerves revealed neural continuity, excess

BACKGROUND: Septal extension graft is a useful method for the correction of contracted nose. When septal or costal cartilage is not available, irradiated homologous costal cartilage (IHCC) may be an alternative choice. This preliminary study is focused on noninfective absorption and other complications and postoperative changes of nasal length after septal extension graft using IHCC.
METHODS: Thirty patients who could be observed for more than 2 years postoperatively were assessed. All patients had contracted nose deformities with a history of an inflammatory contracture after previous aesthe

Real world motor vehicle collision research of injuries due to deployment of "first-generation" air bags has been conducted by Transport Canada since 1993. Fifty-three fatal crashes (36 frontal impacts; 17 side collisions) involving 48 drivers and 10 right front passengers were reviewed. In the Canadian data, air bag deployment in five of nine low severity frontal crashes (delta-V (deltaV) < 25 km/h or 15 mph) was linked to five deaths, four of whom were autopsied (four adults with craniocervical (basal skull and C2 fracture with brainstem avulsion; "closed head injury"--no autopsy) or chest t

BACKGROUND: Failed treatment of an intertrochanteric fracture typically leads to profound functional disability and pain. Treatment with repeated attempts to gain union and to preserve the host femoral head usually is preferred for young patients, but salvage treatment with hip arthroplasty may be considered for selected older patients with poor bone quality, bone loss, or articular cartilage damage. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the results and complications of hip arthroplasty performed as a salvage procedure after the failed treatment of an intertrochanteric hip fracture.

A 13-year-old boy sustained a superior pole patellar sleeve fracture after a blunt trauma of the knee. A medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction had been performed 4 weeks earlier. The patient underwent surgery to reinsert the quadriceps tendon in the superior pole of the patella using two bone suture anchors. One-year postoperative assessment revealed excellent functional outcomes. Sleeve fractures are easily misdiagnosed, and in our case, clinical examination was essential in order to perform the diagnosis.

This article discusses the diagnosis and treatment of pulp involved teeth. There are still some patients and some older physicians who associate certain systemic diseases with dead teeth. For this reason, the subject of focal infection is considered first. As many patients with facial pain or dental infection present first to their physician, it is important for the medical practitioner to understand the cause and its treatment. Finally, brief reference is made to the treatment of teeth injured as a result of trauma with special emphasis on first aid where permanent teeth have become dislodged

The deltoid ligament is the primary ligamentous stabilizer of the ankle joint. Both superficial and deep components of the ligament can be disrupted with a rotational ankle fracture, chronic ankle instability, or in late stage adult acquired flatfoot deformity. The role of deltoid ligament repair in these conditions has been limited and its contribution to arthritis is largely unknown. Neglect of the deltoid ligament in the treatment of ankle injuries may be due to difficulties in diagnosis and lack of an effective method for repair. Most acute repair techniques address the superficial deltoid

This article describes a variety of elbow injuries often seen in young, throwing athletes. Understandings of normal skeletal development, as well as the biomechanics of throwing, provide a basis on which to evaluate, diagnose and manage "little league elbow". With emphasis on an anatomically-based differential diagnosis, the pathologic forces placed upon the young thrower's elbow, and the subsequent injury patterns, are reviewed. Medial side injuries are the most common and relate to chronic forces of valgus overload produced during the early and late cocking phases of throwing. The majority o
