Preliminary profile of the Cryptosporidium parvum genome: an expressed sequence tag and genome survey sequence analysis.

Cryptosporidium parvum is a protozoan enteropathogen that infects humans and animals and causes a pronounced diarrheal disease that can be life-threatening in immunocompromised hosts. No specific chemo- or immunotherapies exist to treat cryptosporidiosis and little molecular information is available to guide development of such therapies. To accelerate gene discovery and identify genes encoding potential drug and vaccine targets we constructed sporozoite cDNA and genomic DNA sequencing libraries from the Iowa isolate of C. parvum and determined approximately 2000 sequence tags by single-pass s

Comparative chloroplast genomics of Ajania sericea and sympatric Asteraceae species identifies shared candidate molecular features associated with alpine adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Ajania sericea is endemic to the Dali region of Yunnan and is currently the southernmost known member of the genus Ajania worldwide. It co-occurs with Aster brachytrichus, Anaphalis pannosa, and Leontopodium dedekensii in alpine habitats of northwestern Yunnan, where plants are exposed to strong ultraviolet radiation, low temperatures, strong winds, and drought. To explore whether sympatric Asteraceae species from different lineages share chloroplast genomic features associated with alpine response, we sequenced, assembled, and compared the chloroplast genomes of these four species

Functional genomics analysis of developing zebrafish and human endoderm reveals highly conserved cis-regulatory modules acting during vertebrate organogenesis.

Although vertebrate species are superficially diverse, they share key commonalities in terms of overall morphology, as well as organ configuration and function. Maintenance of these traits during evolution is partially explained by the conservation of critical genes governing embryonic development. However, for conserved genes to deliver consistent developmental outcomes between species, similar gene regulatory programs and gene expression patterns must also be maintained. The endoderm germ layer makes major contributions to the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts and to associated organs

Evaluation of the Ultima Genomics UG 100 sequencer for low-cost, high-sensitivity metagenomic pathogen detection from cerebrospinal fluid.

Clinical metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) is a diagnostic tool allowing near-universal pathogen detection directly from clinical specimens. Despite promising clinical data, broad adoption of mNGS has been hindered by high cost and reduced sensitivity relative to targeted nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs). Recently, Ultima Genomics introduced the UG 100 NGS platform which advertises 10 billion reads per $2,400 sequencing wafer. By lowering costs and improving sequencing depth, the historical value proposition of mNGS may be improved. This study evaluates the UG 100 sequencer…

Of Commensals and Opportunists: Genomics of Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci During Sequential Ear and Eye Infections in a Healthy Adult.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are ubiquitous skin commensals but can cause opportunistic infections and may serve as reservoirs for mobile genetic elements such as the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) associated with healthcare-adapted lineages. In this longitudinal, single-participant case study, we characterized CoNS isolates obtained over time from a healthy 32-year-old male who experienced two infection episodes 6 months apart (left ear, followed by the left eye), together with post-recovery sampling from additional body sites. Six CoNS isolates were recovered, tes

Next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics capacity: findings from a multi-country survey to guide the genomics costing tool 2.0.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) and bioinformatics are critical to infectious disease surveillance, outbreak detection and response, and the research and development of medical countermeasures. Achieving sustainable genomic surveillance requires countries to develop costed national strategies that integrate financial planning and budgeting across sequencing and bioinformatics activities. The genomics costing tool (GCT) was initially developed to estimate the costs of SARS-CoV-2 sequencing and associated bioinformatics. In response to growing country demand, the tool has now been expanded to s…

Genomics, Multi-Omics, and Emerging Artificial Intelligence for Combined Drought-Heat Stress Resilience in Plants: A Structured Narrative Review.

Combined drought-heat stress is not adequately described by adding the responses to drought and heat in isolation. Water limitation restricts evaporative cooling, whereas high temperature increases atmospheric demand and threatens photosynthesis, proteostasis, and reproduction. To assess what has been demonstrated rather than merely proposed, we combined a structured narrative review with a study-level evidence map spanning genomics, multi-omics, and emerging artificial intelligence (AI). The PubMed search, updated on 9 August 2026, returned 254 records; targeted and backward searches contribu…

Time- and temperature-dependent molecular responses to UV-filter 2-ethylhexyl salicylate revealed by dose-dependent yeast functional genomics.

2-Ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS) is a widely used UV filter detected in multiple environmental compartments, yet its toxicological mechanisms remain poorly understood, particularly under varying environmental conditions. Here, we applied a dose-dependent yeast functional genomics approach (DYFGA) using a library of approximately 6000 Saccharomyces cerevisiae knockout strains to assess EHS toxicity across seven concentrations (0.02-20,000 μg/L) at three temperatures (23°C, 30°C, 37°C, representing low, optimal, and high-temperature stress, respectively) and two exposure durations (8 h, 24 h). We d…
