We report a patient who presented with endocapsular capsule tension ring (CTR) in iridocorneal angle leading to secondary angle closure glaucoma (ACG) and subsequent removal of the CTR from trabeculectomy ostium. Secondary ACG was diagnosed 2 years and 6 months after cataract surgery in which a CTR was used for zonular instability. CTR removal with trabeculectomy was performed, after which there was the resolution of symptoms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report in which CTR was removed from trabeculectomy ostium. We describe a surgical technique to explant CTR and comb

Radiation has been associated with increases in noncancerous diseases. An effect of low-dose radiation on the prevalence of clinically detected glaucoma has not been previously reported. We therefore investigated the prevalence of glaucoma in A-bomb survivors and its possible association with radiation dose. A total of 1,589 people who participated in the clinical examination program for A-bomb survivors at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) between October 2006 and September 2008 and who had reconstructed radiation doses, were recruited into this cross-sectional screening study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Glaucoma, a group of eye diseases, is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. However, reports on the prevalence of glaucoma in the South Asian region have not been up-to-date. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of glaucoma in South Asia and analyze its trends by age and sex.
METHODS: Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines, a comprehensive search was undertaken on several electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and Web of Science, to ret

Traditional studies examining caffeine intake and age-related eye diseases (ARED) have shown inconsistent results, potentially related to variations in caffeine assessment methods. This two-sample Mendelian randomisation study investigated associations between plasma caffeine and four ARED: senile cataract, diabetic retinopathy (DR) and glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Summary data on genetically predicted plasma caffeine came from a genome-wide association study of 9876 European-ancestry participants across six population-based studies. ARED data were extracted from FinnGe

PURPOSE: Debate exists whether intraocular pressure fluctuation is a risk factor for glaucoma. Patients with benign essential blepharospasm (BEB) experience intermittent, ultra-short-term intraocular pressure elevations from frequent blinking and spastic eyelid closure. This article explores the development of incident glaucoma after BEB diagnosis.
METHODS: Medicare claims files were used to identify patients with a diagnosis of BEB from 1994 to 2000. An equal-sized control group consisting of patients without BEB was created using one-to-one propensity score matching. The patients with BEB a

A 26-year-old woman presented with signs and symptoms of acute angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) in her left eye. Extended-depth spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) was performed to biometrically assess the anterior chamber depth and crystalline lens conformation. Extended-depth SD-OCT imaging of the crystalline lens showed bilateral spherophakia without dislocation. Neither eye manifested a highly myopic refractive error despite spherophakia. Unanticipated conformation of the anterior and posterior lenticular curvatures, increased thickness of the crystalline lenses, and short ax

Inherited hypercoagulable states (i.e. thrombophilia) have been suggested to be involved in retinal vascular occlusion but results are divergent. Vascular micronutrition and ischemia have been hypothesised to be involved in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. This nationwide study determines the importance of family history of venous thromboembolism (VTE) as a risk factor for retinal vein occlusion (RVO), retinal artery occlusion (RAO), primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). A total of 6,007,042 Swedish individuals were studied. Data from the Swedish Multigener

Proximate causes of intraocular pressure (IOP) decompensation accompanied with persistent pain syndrome were determined based on results of morphological examination of 59 eyes enucleated due to terminal previously operated glaucoma and medical history analysis. Excessive scarring, formation of solid hyalinized membrane in the site of filter pad, closure of anterior chamber angle with synechia as an outcome of chronic iridocyclitis and inappropriate surgical approach lead to increase in the resistance of the aqueous humor outflow and result in glaucoma decompensation causing complications that

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide, with its impact expected to increase substantially in the coming years. It results from structural and functional damage to the optic nerve and can be classified into primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG), and secondary glaucoma. This retrospective cross-sectional study is among the first to examine the prevalence and extent of glaucoma in a tertiary care center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Adults over the age of 18 who presented to the ophthalmology outpatient clinic between January 2017 and December

PRÉCIS: This paper aims to discuss the anatomical features of zonule fibers that center the lens in the eye and summarizes the relationship between zonulopathy and PACD.
ABSTRACT: The increasing lens vault (LV) and lens thickness (LT) is a recognized mechanism for primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG). Zonulopathy, causing the abnormal lens position, is an important factor in this mechanism. Several anatomically distinct sets of zonular fibers are present in primate eyes, including ciliary zonules, vitreous zonules, and attachments between the posterior insertion zone of the vitreous zonules
