Symptom Structure of Depression and Anxiety in Mothers Following Child Loss: A Network and Bayesian Graph Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement, especially following the loss of a child, is a profoundly distressing life event associated with heightened risks o … ved symptom patterns are consistent with enduring depressive and anxiety symptoms rather than acute grief alone. Symptom-focused approaches targeting central and bridge symptoms may support more efficient screening and scalable intervention strategies in bereaved populations.

Effectiveness of Family-Focused End of Life and Bereavement Interventions Across Neonatal, Paediatric, and Adult Intensive Care: An Overview of Reviews.

BACKGROUND: Intensive Care Units (ICUs) care for critically ill patients across all age groups, with many deaths occurring during or shortly after admission. For families, this can be associated with significant psychological distress, including prolonged grief, depression, and post-traumatic stress. Family experiences are influenced by the quality of end-of-life communication, involvement in decision-making, and the availability of bereavement support. Despite this, bereavement care across neonatal, paediatric, and adult ICUs remains inconsistent, highlighting the need for evidence-based stra…

Mental illness and mental health: is the glass half empty or half full?

During the past century, the scope of mental health intervention in North America has gradually expanded from an initial focus on hospitalized patients with psychoses to outpatients with neurotic disorders, including the so-called worried well. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), Fifth Edition, is further embracing the concept of a mental illness spectrum, such that increasing attention to the softer end of the continuum can be expected in the future. This anticipated shift rekindles important questions about how mental illness is defined, how to distinguish betwee

Length of caregiving and well-being among older widowers: implications for the dual process model of bereavement.

The intent of this study was to examine if length of caregiving was associated with older widowers' adjustment to bereavement and to identify factors, based on principles underlying the Dual Process Model of Bereavement, that might mitigate the potential adverse effects of time spent caring. Two-hundred men over the age of 60 and in the second year of bereavement were identified from death records of older women who had died within a 12-month period. Interviews lasted about 2 hours and focused on widowers' experiences surrounding their wives' deaths along with questions about social support, h

Translation and validation of a French version of Brown's Support Behaviors Inventory in perinatal health.

This article describes the process used for translation, testing for reliability and validity, and establishing factor structure of a French version of Brown's Support Behaviors Inventory (SBI-Fr). The objective was to provide an adequate self-report measure of satisfaction with social support during the perinatal period for use with a Francophone population in Québec, Canada. When compared with the English version, the French version had similar qualities regarding reliability and validity, but principal component analysis (N = 271) revealed that the SBI-Fr measures two distinct subscales, pe

Clinical, neuroendocrine, and sleep EEG diagnosis of "unusual" affective presentations: a practical review.

Numerous biologic measures are in the process of being developed for clinical use in psychiatry. It was the aim of this review to focus primarily on the practical usefulness of the DST and REM latency tests, the two most extensively researched of these new techniques. We believe that the emerging laboratory technology, if interpreted in the context of clinical findings, may assist in differential diagnostic decisions on difficult boundary issues surrounding affective disorders. As with other tests in medicine, to expect pathognomonic performance from the emerging laboratory technology in psych
