Allergic contact dermatitis due to a PVC table cover.

BACKGROUND: Plastics are a common cause of occupational skin disorders such as irritant or allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). CASE REPORT: We report a case of occupational ACD due to a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic table cover used as a mouse pad for which we performed patch tests and obtained positive patch tests for the PVC table cover. Composition testing revealed the presence of phthalates and phosphites, which may represent the specific allergens. CONCLUSIONS: Contact with some of the chemical components of the PVC table cover, together with a combination of sweating and friction, ma

Nail cosmetics in nail disorders.

The clinical features of nail dystrophies depend on the part of the nail that has been damaged. Due to the important functions of fingernails and toenails, any abnormality of the nail causes impaired function of the hand or foot. Moreover, the aesthetic aspect of the nail may affect employability, self-esteem, and interaction with other people. Because the nails are often difficult to treat, cosmetology may be an effective support to medical treatment. Nail cosmetics may help the patient to cope with his or her nail dystrophy while waiting for treatment to show its efficacy. It may also be the

Successful outcome of haemodialysis-induced pseudoporphyria after short-term oral N-acetylcysteine and switch to high-flux technique dialysis.

Pseudoporphyria is a blistering disease with skin fragility and shallow scarring that clinically and histopathologically closely resembles porphyria cutanea tarda. The two conditions can be distinguished by porphyrin levels that typically are elevated in porphyria cutanea tarda, but not or only slightly in pseudoporphyria. Pseudoporphyria can be induced by various medications (e.g. non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, diuretics, retinoids), intense UV(A) exposure, or haemodialysis. Treatment of haemodialysis-associated pseudoporphyria is not yet standardized. We report here a 65

Porphyria cutanea tarda, hepatitis C, alcoholism, and hemochromatosis: a case report and review of the literature.

Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is associated with estrogen, certain medications, alcohol abuse, hepatitis viruses, and iron overload. Numerous studies have demonstrated an increased incidence of hepatitis C in patients with PCT; therefore, hepatitis screening should be routinely performed on these patients. On the other hand, although studies have long suspected hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) to be an underlying condition of PCT, many physicians have a low index of suspicion. Also, diagnosis of HH has been difficult until recently, when the gene mutation was identified. We present a case of a

Tinea nigra: report of two cases in infants.

Tinea nigra, a relatively uncommon mycosis caused by Phaeoannelomyces werneckii, is typically seen as an asymptomatic brown or black macule on the hands and feet. We present two cases of tinea nigra in children in São Paulo, Brazil, and alert readers to the potential for confusion with melanocytic lesions.

[Latex contact urticaria and prick test with latex extract].

Latex contact urticaria is being reported with increasing frequency. Atopic patients with dermatitis of the hands are at risk of developing this potentially life threatening allergy. Since 1994 we have tested 200 patients in our dermatological department using the latex skin prick test. 20 relevant, positive latex tests have been found. Glove tests and latex-RAST were performed where these were indicated. The diagnosis of latex contact urticaria would have been overlooked in nine patients had the latex prick test not been performed. The clinical manifestations and findings in 24 patients with

Dermatitis in bulb growers.

A damaged skin forms a health hazard in flower-bulb growers as it enables higher permeation rates for pesticides than normal skin. Therefore, an investigation was performed into the skin condition of 103 bulb growers and 49 controls. Contact dermatitis of the hands was of the same order (11 and 10%) in both groups. However, minor signs of dermatitis were seen more often in bulb growers (30 versus 8%, p < 0.05). Most growers had contact with narcissus sap during the investigation. This irritant sap, as well as many other skin contacts with irritants such as hyacinth dust and pesticides, seemed

An epidemiological comparison between occupational and non-occupational hand eczema.

Thirty-four per cent of 2110 patients with eczema attending a contact dermatitis clinic had hand eczema. Fifty-five per cent (395 of 721) had contact dermatitis and 45% (326 of 721) had endogenous/unclassifiable eczema. Thirty-five per cent of cases (217 of 721) were occupational eczema. An epidemiological comparison of patients with occupational and non-occupational hand eczema (defined as eczema occurring on the hands up to the wrist line) was made. Hand eczema was more common in males in both groups, and there was a significantly larger proportion of males in the occupational group (65%) th

Naproxen-induced bullous photodermatitis.

A case of naproxen-induced bullous photodermatitis ("pseudoporphyria") is presented. A 37-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus developed tense bullae on her hands and lips, and was found to have a clinical and histological condition that was similar to porphyria cutanea tarda without the associated haematological abnormalities. The lesions remitted upon the cessation of naproxen therapy. Although this adverse effect of naproxen has been seen most frequently in patients from Australia and New Zealand, it has not been reported in the Australian medical literature previously.
