BACKGROUND/AIMS: The Fas-Fas ligand system is thought to be involved in stromal cell apoptosis after corneal wounding. The aim was to measure changes in human tear fluid levels of soluble Fas (sFas) and Fas ligand (sFasL) following myopic photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).
METHODS: Tear samples of 59 patients were collected preoperatively, and 1 or 2 days after PRK. Tear fluid sFas or sFasL concentrations were determined using sandwich ELISAs. A 42-year-old woman with functionally disabling postkeratoplasty astigmatism in her right eye 3 years after corneal transplantation for keratoconus received photorefractive keratectomy for high astigmatism in that eye. This did not reduce her astigmatism. The procedure was repeated and corneal astigmatism paradoxically increased. The forces within the pseudo-optical ring that cause and maintain astigmatism in corneal transplants may be a significant factor in the unpredictable response of some corneal transplants to excimer photorefractive astigmatism correction.

Nemaline bodies were found in the regenerating muscle fibers of the neck of a 74-year-old Japanese male with pharyngeal cancer. Histologically, the nemaline bodies were needle-shaped structures and hematoxophilic with phosphotungstic acid-hematoxylin stain. Electron microscopic examination suggested that they arise as extensions of the Z bands. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) using the advanced personalized treatment (APT) nomogram for correction of moderate to high astigmatism.
METHODS: This prospective interventional case series included 60 consecutive eyes of 30 patients undergoing wavefront-guided PRK (Zyoptix 217 Z100 excimer laser, Bausch & Lomb, Munich, Germany) using the APT nomogram and iris registration for myopic astigmatism.
