Large defects that comprise both the maxilla and mandible prove to be difficult reconstructive endeavors and commonly require two free tissue transfers. Three cases are presented to discuss an option for simultaneous reconstruction of maxillary and mandibular defects using a single osteocutaneous fibula free flap. The first case describes a 16-year-old male with a history of extensive facial trauma sustained in a boat propeller accident resulting in a class IId maxillary and 5 cm mandibular defect status post three failed reconstructive surgeries; the second, a 33-year-old male with recurrent

BACKGROUND/AIM: The purpose of the study was to investigate whether non-odontogenic intraosseous translucent lesions of mandibular body are depicted on radiographs of patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The panoramic radiographs of 179 NF1 patients were analysed for translucent lesions of the mandibular body that were of intraosseous, non-odontogenic origin. The results were compared to findings obtained in panoramic radiographs of age- and sex-matched controls.
RESULTS: Only three patients showed intraosseous translucent lesions. These were always unilocular

INTRODUCTION: Radicular cysts treatment involves surgical approach, more or less aggressive. However, treatment of large cystic lesions, including radicular cysts, causes some of dilemmas concerning the choice of the surgical method, especially the degree of radicalism.
CASE REPORT: We presented a 65-year-old male patient with large radicular cyst in the mandible. A large elliptical multilocular radiolucency, located in the left side of the mandible, being in close vicinity to the mandibular canal, was registered at the orthopantomographic radiography. There was a risk of pathological fractur

Whenever a dentist is dealing with abscess formation in the oral and maxillofacial region, it is mostly from dental origins. However, sometimes uncommon (co-)factors are present and responsible for major complications. Many general conditions or medications can significantly influence the course of an inflammation. It might spread faster and wider and also be resistant to "correct" therapy. This case report should raise awareness about general conditions supporting inflammation and demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary treatment in these situations. A 76-year-old patient was referred

OBJECTIVES: To present a rare cause of facial pain, and the differential diagnosis of a lesion of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve.
CASE REPORT: A 19-year-old woman presented to a tertiary referral skull base centre with right periorbital pain and a progressive, right-sided deficit of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve. Clinical examination revealed right-sided hypoaesthesia in the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve dermatome, mild trismus and some wasting of the right masseter muscle. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans revealed a sma

The great auricular nerve that originates from the cervical plexus and supplies sensation to the lower part of the auricle and the skin overlying the angle of the mandible has no motor component. During an elective neck dissection for a squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, we found that the anterior division of the great auricular nerve divided, with a long branch that passed into the submandibular triangle anterior and superficial to the facial vein, and was joined on its deep surface by the marginal mandibular division of the facial nerve. Although anatomical variants of other branches of

The giant cell tumor of the jaws is a rare benign lesion, it has a slow and progressive evolution and it is locally aggressive. Its etiopathogenesis is unknown, it is most common in the mandible and it is often asymptomatic but pain arises from palpation of the area. Diagnosis is made by radiological and histological examination and surgical treatment is necessary. The clinical case of a 28-year-old man affected by a giant cell tumor of the mandible with an aggressive clinical and radiographical behaviour is reported. The patient showed a jaw swelling covered by hyperemic fibro-mucous tissue f

Limitation of mouth opening is a common source of referral to an orofacial pain clinic with a proposed diagnosis of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD). The word "trismus" is defined by the American academy of orofacial pain as: "Myospasm of masticatory muscles specifically causing limited jaw opening; early symptom of tetanus". Therefore, once trismus is suspected, TMD should be ruled out. However, it is not uncommon to find the usage of this term to describe severe limitation of opening by causes other than myospasm, therefore posing the risk of misdiagnosis. The purpose of this articl

Advanced anterior floor of mouth squamous cell carcinoma has been traditionally treated with wide excision in conjunction with mandibulectomy and radical neck dissection. This has resulted in significant mandibulofacial defects with functional and cosmetic significance. Efforts at primary reconstruction in the past using bone grafts, osteomyocutaneous flaps, and other methods have yielded unsatisfactory results. A history of prior irradiation has made this problem even more refractory. We present a series of 11 patients who underwent composite resection for advanced anterior floor of mouth car

There is growing interest in non-smoking non-drinking (NSND) patients presenting with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). There are, however, few published reports of OSCC in the elderly. We describe a subgroup of elderly NSND patients presenting with OSCC. Patients with SCC of the oral cavity were retrospectively assessed from the Head and Neck Oncology Tumour Stream database of the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Epidemiological and clinical data for 169 consecutive patients were reviewed and analysed. NSND patients were more likely to be females with a higher median age at presentation. They wer

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are rare solid tumours accounting for less than 1% of all malignancies and are very unusual in the head and neck region. Histopathologically diagnosed cases of STS treated at Regional Cancer Centre (RCC). Trivandrum, India, between January 1989 and November 2000 were analyzed retrospectively. Survival analysis was carried out by Kaplan-Meier method and curves were compared using log rank test. A total of 22 cases were seen during the study period. The mean age of the patients was 36.4 years with male-to-female ratio of 2:1. The neck, lower jaw, tongue, cheek, scalp a

BACKGROUND: Ablative orofacial defects incorporating mimetic facial musculature/nerve cause hemifacial expressive dysfunction and considerable morbidity but are rarely reanimated immediately using free functioning gracilis myocutaneous flaps.
METHODS: Disrupted buccal branches provided a recipient facial nerve for 24 gracilis reinnervations. An additional 15 free flaps were used for extensive composite defects. Smile outcome was graded according to Terzis' criteria after 2 years of recurrence-free follow-up. The effects of postoperative radiotherapy, integrity of the oral commissure, and doub

A retrospective review of cases histologically diagnosed as malignant lesions of the orofacial region in 1992-2003 from the records of the Department of Oral Pathology and Biology, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria was carried out. All cases were subjected to analysis of age, gender, site distribution and histologic types. Malignant tumours constituted 18% of all the biopsies of orofacial lesions seen within the period. The mean age of patients was 42.2+/-21.5 years (range: 2.5-85). There were 177 (69%) epithelial tumours of which squamous cell carcinoma was predominant, 47 (18%) sar
