BACKGROUND: Deoxynivalenol (DON), one of the most prevalent mycotoxins, has been found to cause fetal growth retardation in animals. However, limited evidence exists regarding its effects on pregnant women.
METHODS: Maternal urinary concentration of total DON (tDON) and free DON (fDON) in the second trimester was measured using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Provisional daily intake (PDI) of DON was calculated based on tDON concentration. Linear and logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between DON exposure levels and birth weight, birth length

Many types of mycotoxins are found in food sources contaminated with fungi, and if these are ingested in large quantities or over a long period, they can affect the health of humans and domestic animals. Berberine (BBR) is a plant alkaloid with multiple pharmacological functions. This study aimed to investigate the effect of different levels of the plant alkaloid BBR on reducing toxic effects of aflatoxin B1 (AFB) and ochratoxin A (OTA) in broilers by examining performance characteristics, blood biochemistry, antioxidant systems, ileum morphology, and histopathology of the liver. In earlier work we have reported that garlic and cabbage extracts can protect laboratory animals from the toxic effects of different mycotoxins. Previous research demonstrated that fumonisin (FB) induced developmental effects in mice, rats and hamsters. The objectives of the present study were to utilize the pregnant rat as an in vivo model to compare the potential of garlic and cabbage seed extracts to prevent the developmental toxicity of FB and the effects of these extracts on sphingolipid metabolism in dam and foetus livers. Six treatment groups included a control group, a group fed on an

The mechanisms by which trichothecene mycotoxins cause immunological effects in leukocytes such as cytokine up-regulation, aberrant IgA production, or apoptotic cell death are not fully understood. In the present study, mRNA differential display analysis was used to evaluate changes in gene expression induced by the trichothecene vomitoxin (VT or deoxynivalenol) in a T-cell model, the murine EL-4 thymoma, that was stimulated with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and ionomycin (ION). Ten differentially expressed fragments of cDNA were isolated and sequenced and three of these were identifi

Fumonisins are mycotoxins produced by Fusarium moniliforme and other Fusarium species. They are commonly found in corn and corn-based foodstuffs. Fumonisins inhibit sphingolipid (SL) biosynthesis, alter cellular SL profiles, and thus may affect cell proliferation and differentiation, both of which are important processes for reproduction. However, there are few reports of the effects of F. moniliforme or fumonisins on mammalian reproduction or development. To study the reproductive effects of this fungus, diets formulated with culture material of toxic F. moniliforme strain MRC 826 (CM) to pro

Chemical-based pesticides are widely used in agriculture to protect crops from insect infestation and diseases. However, the excessive use of highly toxic pesticides causes several human health (neurological, tumor, cancer) and environmental problems. Therefore nanoparticle-based green pesticides have become of special importance in recent years. The antifungal activities of pure and Ag doped (solid and hollow) TiO2 nanoparticles are studied against two potent phytopathogens, Fusarium solani (which causes Fusarium wilt disease in potato, tomato, etc) and Venturia inaequalis (which causes apple

The body may be exposed simultaneously to more than one nephrotoxic substance and to measure the effects of the great number of possible combinations of nephrotoxins will rapidly become a great challenge when using the traditional methods. Therefore, we developed a rapid and cost-efficient method to screen the apoptotic potential of combinations of known cell- or nephrotoxic substances as ochratoxin A (OTA), cisplatin, cadmium, H(2)O(2), and amphotericin B on renal epithelial cell lines. The cells were seeded in 96-well plates and the apoptotic and necrotic potential of different combinations

Botrytis cinerea causes gray mold across a wide range of crops and postharvest contexts. While integrated agronomic practices help, chemical fungicides are still often required, raising concerns about resistance development and environmental impact. Biological control agents (BCAs), particularly non-Saccharomyces yeasts, offer advantages such as simple nutritional needs, surface colonization potential, and lower risk of mycotoxin production. A robust, rapid, and cost-effective in vitro screening workflow is essential to identify promising BCAs that inhibit B. cinerea through fungistatic diffus

Alternariol (AOH), an emerging mycotoxin produced by Alternaria species, is a frequent contaminant of plant-derived foods and a major contributor to chronic dietary exposure to Alternaria toxins. Despite evidence of its cytotoxic, genotoxic, endocrine-disrupting, and immunomodulatory effects, its molecular mechanisms of toxicity remain incompletely understood, limiting mechanistically informed risk assessment. As evidence suggests that AOH acts as a multi-kinase inhibitor, this study aimed to expand its kinase target spectrum through integrated computational and experimental approaches. Ligand

In this work, the genome of Bacillus subtilis 34a, a strain isolated from healthy coffee plants, was sequenced and analyzed by genome mining to predict its antifungal potential. These predictions were subsequently evaluated by characterizing the volatile and diffusible chemical profiles associated with interactions between B. subtilis 34a and fungal pathogens (Fusarium spp. and Umbelopsis sp.). Dual co-cultivation assays revealed variable susceptibility among fungal strains to the antagonistic activity of Bacillus subtilis 34a, with radial growth inhibition ranging from 15.2% to 54.1%. The mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination in animal feed has been reported to reduce the growth performance of animals and compromise their immune system, especially pigs. Bacterial detoxification is considered a promising strategy to mitigate its harmful effects. We previously identified a bacterial isolate (Bacillus sp. LS100) from the chicken gut with the ability to detoxify DON. To explore its potential application in swine production, the current study was focused on in vitro characterization of Bacillus sp. LS100 with regard to its capacity to detoxify DON. The bacterium was stabl

Deoxynivalenol (DON), as the most prevalent mycotoxin, not only poses a significant threat to animal and human health but also exerts pronounced adverse effects on growth and development. Quercetin (QUE), a naturally occurring antioxidant, is known to promote muscle growth and differentiation. In this study, a DON-exposed broiler model with QUE intervention was established to investigate the protective mechanisms of QUE against DON-induced skeletal muscle toxicity. Eighty broilers were randomly divided into four groups: CON group, DON group, QUE group, and DON+QUE group. Each group received or

Zearalenone (ZEA) is a prevalent non-steroidal estrogenic mycotoxin in feed and feedstuffs. This study investigated the effects of graded dietary purified ZEA standard (0, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 mg/kg) on growth performance, blood biochemistry, oxidative stress, immune response, intestinal morphology, histopathology, and gut microbiota in broilers. The use of purified ZEA standard eliminates confounding effects from co-occurring contaminants and the reduced nutritional quality of naturally contaminated feed, allowing an accurate assessment of ZEA-specific effects. A total of 216 one-day-old Arb

Zearalenone (ZEN) is a prevalent estrogenic mycotoxin that contaminates cereal-based food and feed and poses a substantial risk to human and animal health. Enzymatic detoxification has emerged as a promising mitigation strategy, and several α/β-hydrolases have been shown to efficiently hydrolyze ZEN (EC 3.1.1.B12). Moreover, indirect screening has identified additional structurally distinct enzymes with potential ZEN-degrading activity. In the present study, we evaluated two such enzymes-a Streptomyces exfoliatus lipase (SeLIP) and a Thermobifida cellulosilytica cutinase (TcCUT)-and compared t

Aflatoxin contamination caused by Aspergillus flavus represents a serious food safety threat in tropical agroecosystems. This study examined the genetic diversity, population structure and geographical distribution of the mycotoxin biosynthetic gene clusters in A. flavus isolates associated with maize (Zea mays L.) and chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) from Bangladesh. Thirty-eight isolates were evaluated for morphological features, confirmed by ITS sequencing, genotyped based on SSR markers and determined via PCR analysis of four major aflatoxin pathway genes (aflR, aflP/omt1, aflO/omtB and tub1).
