Cold effect in median nerve conductions in clinical carpal tunnel syndrome with normal nerve conduction studies.

Clinical diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is confirmed by nerve conduction studies (NCS). In some cases, NCS may be normal. We aimed to demonstrate changes of distal motor latency (DML) and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) pathology of demyelination in entrapment neuropathy with cold application in case of clinical CTS with normal NCS. This prospective, cross-sectional, randomise, case-control involved 15 patients (25 hands) with clinically definite unilateral or bilateral CTS and normal nerve conduction studies (NCS), and 11 controls (22 hands). Ice pack was applied to median nerve tr

Impact of carpal tunnel syndrome on ulnar nerve at wrist: Systematic review.

Considerable debate exists in the literature about possible anomalies of ulnar nerve at wrist in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We systematically reviewed the literature about electrophysiologic and morphologic changes of ulnar nerve at wrist in CTS. We carried out a comprehensive search using PubMed from 1963 through October 2017. Data were extracted and the quality of the included studies was evaluated. Twenty-eight studies were selected. Seventy-nine percent of the studies report abnormalities of the ulnar nerve conduction. There was a relation between the median and ulnar nerve conduction i

A Study of F Wave Latencies, Chronodispersion and Persistence in Healthy Medical Undergraduates at BPKIHS.

Background The F wave is a CMAP (compound muscle action potential) evoked by a supramaximal stimulation of a motor nerve. F waves are particularly useful for the diagnoses of polyneuropathies at a very early stage and proximal nerve lesions. F waves have a very high diagnostic role in neurophysiology; we would like to study different F wave parameters and effect of anthropometric variables on F wave parameters in normal healthy individuals. Objective To study the effect of anthropometric variables on F wave latencies, chronodispersion and persistence Method Healthy males (n=64) and females (n=

Investigation of the Changes in the Power Distribution in Resting-State Brain Networks Associated with Pure Conduct Disorder.

Conduct disorder (CD) is a psychiatric disorder in children and adolescence. To investigate changes in the power distribution in brain networks between CD and typically developing (TD) groups, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) data of thirty-six subjects were first recorded, and then the data were preprocessed using DPARSF and SPM8. Meanwhile, the power of the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signals of ninety brain regions was acquired using the integral of the Welch power spectral density (PSD). Additionally, the powers of the brain regions that reached sig

Guillain-Barré Syndrome Triggered by Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors, used as immunotherapy in the treatment of melanoma and refractory cancer, may trigger autoimmune disorders. We describe a case of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) after the treatment with ipilimumab and nivolumab and review 4 other reported cases. We confirmed the diagnosis of GBS by electrodiagnostic and cerebrospinal fluid studies. Electrodiagnostic results showed findings consistent with acquired demyelinating polyneuropathy and cerebrospinal fluid showed albuminocytologic dissociation. All patients were treated with intravenous immunoglobulin or other immunomodul

Molybdenum coated SU-8 microneedle electrodes for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

Electrophysiological devices are connected to the body through electrodes. In some applications, such as nerve stimulation, it is needed to minimally pierce the skin and reach the underneath layers to bypass the impedance of the first layer called stratum corneum. In this study, we have designed and fabricated surface microneedle electrodes for applications such as electrical peripheral nerve stimulation. We used molybdenum for microneedle fabrication, which is a biocompatible metal; it was used for the conductive layer of the needle array. To evaluate the performance of the fabricated electro

Sciatic Nerve Conductivity is Impaired by Hamstring Strain Injuries.

The aim of this study was to assess sciatic nerve conductivity in athletes with a history of hamstring strain injuries. Twenty-seven athletes with a history of hamstring strain injuries were included in the injured group. The control group consisted of 16 uninjured participants. We measured the proximal and distal latencies and calculated the sciatic nerve conduction velocity to evaluate neuronal conductivity. The results were expressed as median values and interquartile ranges. Both proximal latency and distal latency of the injured limb in the injured group were significantly longer than tho

Does the comparison of median-to-ulnar nerve sensory conduction add an additional value in electrodiagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Distal sensory onset latency (DSOL), conduction velocity (SCV) and nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitudes are used in electrodiagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) beside motor conduction data. The aim of our study is to search whether the comparison of median-to-ulnar nerve sensory conduction adds an additional diagnostic value in CTS or not. METHODS: Median and ulnar nerve were stimulated on wrist, and SNAPs were recorded on second and fifth fingers, respectively. Best cut-off points for the searched parameters and their diagnostic efficiencies were determined.

Paraparetic Guillain-Barré syndrome: Nondemyelinating reversible conduction failure restricted to the lower limbs.

INTRODUCTION: Paraparetic Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare subtype of GBS characterized by leg weakness and areflexia in the absence of neurological involvement of the arms, cranial nerves, or respiratory muscles. Onset is characterized by lower back, buttock, or leg pain, followed by development of symmetric flaccid limb weakness in the absence of sensory disturbance. METHODS: We describe an elderly woman who developed postinfectious symmetric flaccid leg weakness in the absence of sensory disturbance. Serial nerve conduction studies were carried out over 5 months. RESULTS: Anteceden

A case of congenital spinal muscular atrophy with pain due to a mutation in TRPV4.

We present a patient with congenital spinal muscular atrophy associated with pain, subjective sensory loss, right talipes equinovarus, delayed walking, and progressive gait impairment. A sister and niece reportedly had Charcot-Marie-Tooth 1A, but the patient's electromyogram showed an axonal motor neuropathy or neuronopathy. We identified a c.806G>A TRPV4 gene mutation causing an Arg269His amino acid substitution. TRPV4 mutations cause variable phenotypes including axonal sensorimotor neuropathy and motor neuropathy or neuronopathy. Associated features may include arthrogryposis, skeletal dysp

Neuromuscular ultrasound in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and normal nerve conduction studies.

INTRODUCTION: Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are sensitive for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), but a small proportion of patients with clinical CTS have normal NCS. This retrospective study was designed to assess the neuromuscular ultrasound findings in a group of CTS patients. METHODS: The electronic medical record was reviewed by a neurologist to identify patients who had a diagnosis of CTS with normal NCS, including either mixed median-ulnar comparison or transcarpal sensory studies, and complete neuromuscular ultrasound evaluation for CTS. RESULTS: Fourteen individuals (22 wrists) met all

Relationship Between Cerebrospinal Fluid Protein Levels and Electrophysiologic Abnormalities in Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein level is known to be elevated in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). This report correlates the degree of CSF protein elevation with the number of electrophysiologic abnormalities on nerve conduction study (NCS). METHODS: We reviewed 38 patients admitted to our institution with a diagnosis of GBS and had both a measured CSF protein level and a NCS within 24 hours of each other. RESULTS: CSF protein level correlates with the number of NCS demyelination criteria, as described by Cornblath, in patients with GBS. CONCLUSIONS: This retro
