Compromised speed discrimination among schizophrenia patients when viewing smooth pursuit targets.

Schizophrenia subjects' smooth pursuit abnormalities may reflect a problem with perception of motion, although evidence comes primarily from reports using stimuli that differ from standard smooth pursuit stimuli (i.e. moving gratings or coherent dots). This study presented schizophrenia and healthy subjects with a forced-choice speed discrimination paradigm using smooth pursuit-like stimuli. The schizophrenia subject's motion processing was impaired, as evidenced by their significantly higher speed discrimination thresholds (a difference that was 1.7 larger for the patient group). Abnormalitie

Ocular motor outcomes after bilateral and unilateral infantile cataracts.

We wished to study how the severity and duration of early onset visual deprivation affects eye alignment and ocular stability. Thirty-three patients (aged 1 week to 12.8 years) with infantile cataracts (16 bilateral, 17 unilateral) were examined for periods up to 61 months. Twenty-three patients were considered to have cataracts, which were a major obstacle to vision (major form deprivation), 9 of whom underwent surgery within 8 weeks of birth (mean and SD=5.2+/-2.3 weeks) and 10 after 8 weeks (mean and SD=33.9+/-29.7 months). Eye alignment and fixation stability was measured using infrared re

Eye movements of the murine P/Q calcium channel mutant rocker, and the impact of aging.

Mutations in the gene encoding the ion pore of the P/Q voltage-activated calcium channel (CACNA1A) are predicted to alter synaptic transmission and dendritic excitability within cerebellar granule and Purkinje cells. Determining the relationships between these alterations, neuronal activity, and behavior may yield insight into the relationship between neuronal intrinsic properties and signal processing within the ocular motor system. Toward this end, we compared ocular motor performance in the CACNA1A mutant rocker and C57BL/6 controls. Average vertical eye position was abnormally elevated in

Oculomotor dysfunction May not subside upon clinical resolution of sport related concussion.

Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a public health crisis that results in growing diagnoses each year. Recent evidence suggests that there are oculomotor deficits present in patients with SRC. It is unclear if this oculomotor deficit is linked to other clinical outcomes or lingers beyond clinical symptom resolution. The purpose of this study is to investigate the progression of oculomotor and clinical deficits following SRC at the acute stage of injury and again when they are clinically considered fully symptom-free for at least 24 h. 13 NCAA athletes completed a multifaceted concussion battery

Hyperconnective and hypoconnective cortical and subcortical functional networks in multiple system atrophy.

INTRODUCTION: In multiple system atrophy (MSA), the organization of the functional brain connectivity within cortical and subcortical networks and its clinical correlates remains to be investigated. METHODS: Whole-brain based 'resting-state' fMRI data were obtained from 22 MSA patients (11 MSA-C, 11 MSA-P) and 22 matched healthy controls, together with standardized clinical assessment and video-oculographic recordings (EyeLink®). RESULTS: MSA patients vs. controls showed significantly higher ponto-cerebellar functional connectivity and lower default mode network connectivity (p < .05, correc

Extensive Postradiation Ocular and Diffuse Cranial Neuromyotonia Mimicking Myasthenia Gravis.

BACKGROUND: Ocular neuromyotonia is a rare, but well-recognized, complication of cranial irradiation. CASE REPORT: Using figures and videos, we report a 52-year-old man with extensive ocular, brainstem, and lower cranial nerve neuromyotonia postradiation therapy for a fourth ventricle glioma who, in the context of an apparently positive edrophonium test, was initially misdiagnosed with myasthenia gravis. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first case of postirradiation neuromyotonia to be reported with such extensive cranial nerve and brainstem involvement.

Eye tracking detects disconjugate eye movements associated with structural traumatic brain injury and concussion.

Disconjugate eye movements have been associated with traumatic brain injury since ancient times. Ocular motility dysfunction may be present in up to 90% of patients with concussion or blast injury. We developed an algorithm for eye tracking in which the Cartesian coordinates of the right and left pupils are tracked over 200 sec and compared to each other as a subject watches a short film clip moving inside an aperture on a computer screen. We prospectively eye tracked 64 normal healthy noninjured control subjects and compared findings to 75 trauma subjects with either a positive head computed

Association of Titanium Mesh and Bovine Pericardium Membrane in the Treatment of Severe Enophthalmos.

The blowout fractures may be classified as pure or impure depending on the associated structures. There are 2 main theories attempting to describe the mechanism of injury, the hydraulic, and blocking mechanism. The complications of this type of fracture may involve diplopia, enophthalmos, and ocular movement restriction. Several materials are available for the reconstruction of orbital floor, including the titanium mesh, which present great properties, such as easy modeling and stabilization, small thickness, and shape maintenance. There, however, are disadvantages such as the possibility of a

Correlation between blink reflex abnormalities and magnetic resonance imaging findings in patients with multiple sclerosis.

This study investigates the correlation between brain magnetic resonance imaging findings and blink reflex abnormalities in patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. Twenty-six patients and 17 healthy subjects were included in this study. Blink reflex test (BRT) results were obtained using right and left stimulations; thus, 52 BRT results were recorded for the patient group, and 34 BRT results were recorded for the control group. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings were classified based on the existence of brainstem lesions (hyperintense lesion on T2 weighted (W) and fast

Characteristics of contralesional and ipsilesional saccades in hemianopic patients.

In order to further our understanding of action-blindsight, four hemianopic patients suffering from visual field loss contralateral to a unilateral occipital lesion were compared to six healthy controls during a double task of verbally reported target detection and saccadic responses toward the target. Three oculomotor tasks were used: a fixation task (i.e., without saccade) and two saccade tasks (eliciting reflexive and voluntary saccades, using step and overlap 600 ms paradigms, respectively), in separate sessions. The visual target was briefly presented at two different eccentricities (5° a

Deviant smooth pursuit in preschool children exposed prenatally to methadone or buprenorphine and tobacco affects integrative visuomotor capabilities.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although an increasing number of children are born to mothers in opioid maintenance therapy (OMT), little is known about the long-term effects of these opioids. Previous studies suggest an association between prenatal OMT exposure and difficulties in eye movement control. Also, the effects of tobacco smoking on eye movements have been reported. The present study examined the influence of eye movements, i.e. smooth pursuit, on visuomotor capabilities in children of smoking mothers in OMT. DESIGN: The study comprised a 2 (OMT versus contrast group) × 2 (slow versus fast smo

Christianson syndrome: spectrum of neuroimaging findings.

Christianson syndrome (CS) is caused by mutations in SLC9A6 and is characterized by severe intellectual disability, absent speech, microcephaly, ataxia, seizures, and behavioral abnormalities. The clinical phenotypes of CS and Angelman syndrome (AS) are similar. Differentiation between CS and AS is important in terms of genetic counseling. We report on two children with CS and confirmed mutations in SLC9A6 focusing on neuroimaging findings and review the available literature. Cerebellar atrophy (CA) occurs in approximately 60% of the patients with CS and develops after the age of 12 months. Hy

Mechanisms of TBI and visual consequences in military and veteran populations.

PURPOSE: Blast-related (BR) traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) occur secondary to explosive blasts. Blast-related TBIs can be caused by the blast wave itself or by direct head trauma caused by events surrounding the blast. Non-blast-related (NBR) TBIs are caused by direct head trauma. Recent evidence shows that TBIs are associated with vision problems, particularly binocular system problems. The purpose of this study was to determine if similar types and amounts of vision problems are present in patients with BR TBIs and NBR TBIs. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of eye examination records of 5
