Effects of Chronic Prenatal Alcohol Exposure on Nociceptive Responses to Mechanical and Thermal Stimuli in Rats.

The present study sought to investigate the effects of chronic prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) on nociceptive responses to mechanical and th … he receptor or ion channel level, while a disruption in the equilibrium between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems may be a contributing factor. The results of this study highlight a critical aspect of the harmful systemic effects of alcohol, while also underscoring the need for further research to elucidate the underlying mechanisms, including the role of the …

Dysautonomia, a heuristic approach to a revised model for etiology of disease.

Dysautonomia refers to a disease where the autonomic nervous system is dysfunctional. This may be a central control mechanism, as in genetically determined familial dysautonomia (Riley-Day Syndrome), or peripherally in the distribution of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. There are multiple reports of a number of different diseases associated with dysautonomia. The etiology of this association has never been explained. There are also multiple publications on dysautonomia associated with specific non-caloric nutritional deficiencies. Beriberi is the prototype of autonomic dysfunction

Effect of 12 Weeks Yoga Therapy on Heart
Rate Variability and Baroreflex Sensitivity
in Female Hypothyroid Patients:
A Randomised Control Trial.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormones tend to regulate the metabolic rate of the body. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is involved in the regulation of cardiovascular functions, and its dysfunction increases cardiovascular risk. About 65% of overt hypothyroid patients have autonomic dysfunction, which is due to sympathetic overactivity and parasympathetic withdrawal leading to a state of sympathovagal imbalance. Also, hypothyroidism is stated to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. PURPOSE: Yoga practice helps in better modulation of the ANS and has been shown to improve autono

Beneficial effect(s) of n-3 fatty acids in cardiovascular diseases: but, why and how?

Low rates of coronary heart disease was found in Greenland Eskimos and Japanese who are exposed to a diet rich in fish oil. Suggested mechanisms for this cardio-protective effect focused on the effects of n-3 fatty acids on eicosanoid metabolism, inflammation, beta oxidation, endothelial dysfunction, cytokine growth factors, and gene expression of adhesion molecules; But, none of these mechanisms could adequately explain the beneficial actions of n-3 fatty acids. One attractive suggestion is a direct cardiac effect of n-3 fatty acids on arrhythmogenesis. N-3 fatty acids can modify Na+ channels

The relationship between pupillary light reflex and clinical measures of central pain processing in chronic WAD. An observational study with healthy cohort comparison.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysregulation has previously been reported in chronic whiplash-associated disorders (WAD). Autonomic function can be evaluated via the pupillary light reflex (PLR). OBJECTIVE: To determine if PLR measures differ between chronic WAD and healthy controls (HCs), and to investigate the relationship between a) PLR and clinical measures associated with central pain processing, and b) psychological measures - posttraumatic stress, anxiety and stress - associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) function. DESIGN: Observational study with healthy control comparison. PARTICIP

Peripheral nerve remodeling in the tumor microenvironment: neuro-immune crosstalk, molecular mechanisms, and precision therapeutic.

As a crucial component of the tumor microenvironment, the nervous system modulates tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis. Conversely, tumors actively hijack and reshape neural structures to activate nerve-dependent developmental and regenerative processes that promote their own growth and survival. Despite extensive progress in tumor-neural crosstalk, the molecular mechanisms underlying neuro-immune coordination in peripheral nerve remodeling remain incompletely understood, and integrated strategies targeting this axis to overcome immunotherapy resistance are still lacking. This review

Low-input Nucleus Isolation and Multiplexing with Barcoded Antibodies of Mouse Sympathetic Ganglia for Single-nucleus RNA Sequencing.

The cardiac autonomic nervous system is crucial in controlling cardiac function, such as heart rate and cardiac contractility, and is divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic branches. Normally, there is a balance between these two branches to maintain homeostasis. However, cardiac disease states such as myocardial infarction, heart failure, and hypertension can induce the remodeling of cells involved in cardiac innervation, which is associated with an adverse clinical outcome. Although there are vast amounts of data for the histological structure and function of the cardiac autonomic nerv

Androgen receptors in areas of the spinal cord and brainstem: A study in adult male cats.

Sex hormones, including androgens and estrogens, play an important role in autonomic, reproductive and sexual behavior. The areas that are important in these behaviors lie within the spinal cord and brainstem. Relevant dysfunctional behavior in patients with altered androgen availability or androgen receptor sensitivity might be explained by the distribution of androgens and their receptors in the central nervous system. We hypothesize that autonomic dysfunction is correlated with the androgen sensitivity of spinal cord and brainstem areas responsible for autonomic functions. In this study, an

Autonomic nervous system activity and the risk of nosocomial infection in critically ill patients with brain injury.

PURPOSE: Nosocomial infection contributes to adverse outcome after brain injury. This study investigates whether autonomic nervous system activity is associated with a decreased host immune response in patients following stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: A prospective study was performed in adult patients with TBI or stroke who were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of our tertiary university hospital between 2013 and 2016. Heart rate variability (HRV) was recorded daily and assessed for autonomic nervous system activity. Outcomes were nosocomial infections and immunosuppress

Heart Rate Variability modifications induced by high doses of incobotulinumtoxinA and onabotulinumtoxinA in hemiplegic chronic stroke patients: A single blind randomized controlled, crossover pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin type A is a valid and safe treatment for focal spasticity, with documented effects on both sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Heart rate variability can provide detailed information about the control of the autonomic nervous system on cardiovascular activities. Previous studies in literature showed no significant changes in Heart Rate Variability with doses >600 U of incobotulinumtoxinA in chronic post stroke spastic patients; however, at present time, these results have not been confirmed with doses >600 U of onabotulinumtoxinA. AIM: To evaluate changes in H

Borderline personality disorder and emotion regulation: insights from the Polyvagal Theory.

The current study provides the first published evidence that the parasympathetic component of the autonomic nervous system differentiates the response profiles between individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and controls. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a non-invasive marker of the influence of the myelinated vagal fibers on the heart, and heart period were collected during the presentation of film clips of varying emotional content. The BPD and control groups had similar initial levels of RSA and heart period. However, during the experiment the groups exhibited co

A rare case of REM sleep-related bradyarrhythmia syndrome with concomitant severe hypertension: a case report and a review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-related bradyarrhythmia syndrome is characterized by pathological asystoles during the REM sleep phase. It is a rare rhythm disorder, being reported only few times in the literature. Due to non-specific symptoms, REM sleep-related bradyarrhythmia might be often underdiagnosed. Other cardiac diseases associated with pathological sinus arrests must be excluded to establish the correct diagnosis of and appropriate therapy for REM sleep-related bradyarrhythmia. We report a case of this syndrome followed by hypertension and diastolic heart failure. THE
