The objective of this study was to investigate, in a female population-based sample, specific demographic and psychosocial predictors of perception of risk for female breast cancer. The study was a cross-sectional survey of 7135 healthy women ranging from 15 to 85 years. A questionnaire assessed the perceived risk for breast cancer in 6 German centers. Specified awareness was personal knowledge in relation to breast cancer incidence, risk factors, perception, and level of concern. The Judgment of Line Orientation Test, a visuospatial processing task, was administered to normal subjects, to schizophrenic patients and to patients with delusional disorder. Significantly better performance was seen in the normal subjects than in the schizophrenic and delusional patients. Accumulating evidence indicates that cerebral processing of consonants and vowels is separable. It has been shown that disordered temporal acuity leads to disturbed consonant perception in cases with pure word deafness. In contrast, there has been no clear explanation of how vowel perception is impaired. We examined a patient with auditory agnosia, who showed a differential ability to identify the five Japanese vowels after bilateral cerebral lesions. Human and nonhuman faces were shown to clinical controls, autistic, mentally retarded, and language-disordered children to assess their ability to detect and draw inferences about facial age. Children were asked to select from sets of three faces the one that appeared youthful or to select faces that would be associated with some age-related characteristic. Projection of a 3D scene onto the 2D retina necessarily entails a loss of information, yet perceivers experience a world populated with volumetric objects. We investigated the spatiotemporal cortical dynamics during the perception of object-motion and visually-induced self-motion perception in six normal subjects, using a 143-channel neuromagnetometer. Object-motion specific tasks evoked early transient activity over the right temporooccipital cortex, while self-motion perception, or vection, additionally was followed by sustained bilateral activity in the temporoparietal area. The specific signal distributions suggest to represent the different perceptual modes of object-motion and self-motion sensation.

We reply to Denenberg's (1999) recent critique of our work (Mody, Studdert-Kennedy, & Brady, 1997). PURPOSE: To assess the prognosis for recovery of vision in patients with blindness due to head injury, and to analyse the predictive value of visual evoked potential (VEP).
METHODS: One hundred consecutive patients with unilateral/bilateral blindness as a result of minor head injury were studied with regard to their visual status, CT scan, MRI scan and serial VEPs. Steroids were given to those presenting within one month of injury, 5 patients among them received methyl prednisolone. Transethmoidal decompression was done in 6 patients.
RESULTS: Visual improvement was recorded in 23 patients.

This research investigated the ability of 4- and 7-month-old infants to match unfamiliar, dynamic faces and voices on the basis of age or maturity. In Experiment 1, infants received videotaped trials of an adult and a child of the same gender, side by side, speaking a nursery rhyme in synchrony with one another. The voice to one and then the other face was played in synchrony with the movements of both faces in a random order across 12 trials.
