Predicting the radiation dose‒toxicity relationship is important for local tumor control and patients' quality of life. We developed a first intuitive evaluation system that directly matches the three-dimensional (3D) dose distribution with the skin surface image of patients with radiation dermatitis (RD) to predict RD in patients undergoing radiotherapy. Using an RGB-D camera, 82 3D skin surface images (3DSSIs) were acquired from 19 patients who underwent radiotherapy. 3DSSI data acquired included 3D skin surface shape and optical imaging of the area where RD occurs. Surface registration betw

A variety of dermatologic complications can occur after interventional radiology procedures, including fluoroscopy-induced radiation dermatitis, thermal skin injury from tumor ablation, non-target embolization to the skin, allergic reactions related to interventional radiology procedures, and dermatitis and infections at catheter sites. Yet, interventional radiologists typically lack training in dermatology. This review focuses on recognition of dermatologic complications and introduces basic principles for management of these complications. By taking a more active role in the diagnosis, manag

BACKGROUND: To observe the effect of red light phototherapy (RLPT) on radioactive dermatitis (RD) caused by radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC).
METHODS: Sixty patients with HNC admitted to our hospital were randomly divided into experimental group and control group, 30 patients in each group. The control group received routine daily care during radiotherapy treatment. In the experimental group, in addition to routine daily care during radiotherapy treatment, photon therapy apparatus RLPT was added, 10 min/time, 2 times/day, and lasted until the end of radiotherapy. The p

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced skin injury is a serious potential complication of fluoroscopically guided interventions. Transient erythema occurs at doses of 2 to 5 Gy, whereas permanent epilation, ulceration, and desquamation are expected at doses above this level. Complex endovascular procedures (CEPs), such as fenestrated endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (FEVAR), are associated with high radiation doses, yet the prevalence of radiation-induced skin injury is unknown. We hypothesized that skin injury after these exposures is likely to be underrecognized and underreported. This study exami

Thioredoxin (TRX) is a small ubiquitous protein, which regulates cellular redox status and scavenges reactive oxygen species. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of TRX on ultraviolet (UV)-B-mediated inflammatory and apoptotic responses. Ear swelling after UV-B irradiation was significantly reduced in TRX-transgenic mice compared to wild-type mice. Administration i.p. of recombinant human TRX also reduced acute skin inflammatory reaction, such as skin erythema and swelling. Histologically, numbers of inflammatory cells including neutrophils and lymphocytes were significan

Radiation injury to the skin is one of the major limiting factors in radiotherapy. We designed this study using Sprague-Dawley rats to evaluate the reduction in skin injury achieved using natural products from plant extracts as protection. The acute skin reaction in tetrandrine- and Madecassol-treated animals appeared earlier, but was significantly less severe, than in the control group. The peak skin reactions in the tetrandrine group were less serious than those of the control group at three different radiation doses. At a high dose irradiation, the healing effect of tetrandrine is better th

Between 1986 and 1992, 42 patients with carcinoma of the vulva diagnosis, were treated at the Hospital de Oncologia, CMN, SXXI. Mean age was 63 years. There was 1 case stage I, 5 stage II, 25 stage III, 4 stage IV, 2 with recurrent disease and 5 patients could not be classified. Local control was reached in 60% of patients however, 12 patients developed local recurrence after surgery and/or radiation therapy, finally 43% of patients remained disease free after a mean of 19 months of followup. In the subset of advanced disease patients treated with radical or preoperative radiation therapy (27

The paper is concerned with the results of therapy of 115 patients with acute radiation syndrome after the Chernobyl accident. The chief methods of the effective therapy of bone marrow syndrome are antimicrobial drugs and fresh donor platelet mass transfusions. Hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (allogenic bone marrow or embryonic hepatocytes) is indicated and effective in a very limited number of patients in accident irradiation. Severe beta-burns of the skin remain an unsolved problem as a result of their spreading. Organizational principles of therapy of a great number of patients with a

Over a period of 22 years the authors reconstructed 49 patients with radiation injuries of varying severity. The retrospective study examined the indications for the radiation therapy, the interval between the treatment and the development of tissue damage, its site and severity. A few typical case reports are presented. Particular aspects emerging from this series, the reconstructive methods used and the results achieved with regard to partial or complete excision of radiation damaged skin are discussed.

The establish a threshold dose, an acute experiment was carried out by 30 min. radiation of the rabbit's shaved head with all ranges of infrared, 200 W/m2, 350 W/m2 and 500 W/m2 intensities. Irradiation was prolonged up to 2 hrs. Having established the threshold dose, a chronic (5 months') experiment was carried out, irradiating 9 rabbits' skin (in 3 groups) with 350 W/m2 intensity in the range of all three bands. Similarly, tests on the eye transparent part were performed, irradiating only one eye, the other being handled as the control. The results show that the 350 W/m2 intensity of IR-A an

The embryology and anatomy of the ano-perineal region explain the complex pathology which is difficult to treat. Six types of lesions are discussed. Congenital skin lesions: naevus or angiomas, requiring the same procedures of local autoplasty and graft as those of other regions, whenever they are extensive. Infectious lesions are dominated by Verneuil's disease, chronic hidradenitis or acne conglobata. Treatment involves wide excision which is sufficiently deep, followed by skin graft. Cancerous or pre-cancerous lesions. A distinction must be made between Bowen's disease and Paget's disease:

Radiation dermatitis often presents as a problem for patients and radiotherapists during treatment. Topical corticosteroids have been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect in the treatment of many skin diseases and are commonly prescribed during a course of radiation treatment. A comparison of two different steroid creams, 1% hydrocortisone cream and 0.05% clobetasone butyrate (Eumovate), in a double blind trial was carried out in 54 patients undergoing radiation therapy for breast cancer. 'The cream' was administered when patients reached a given dose of 2000 rad (or earlier if required)

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced skin injury represents one of the most common side effects in breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant whole-breast radiotherapy. Numerous systemic and topical treatments have been studied in the prevention and management of radiation-induced skin injury without providing sustainable treatment strategies. While superficial barrier-forming skin products such as dressings are the standard of care in wound care management, their utilization as preventive treatment approach in radiotherapy has barely attracted attention.
METHODS: In this prospective, intra-patient rand
