Self-efficacy scale for Pap smear screening participation in sheltered women.

BACKGROUND: Sheltered, homeless women disproportionately experience cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. Low rates of Pap smear screening contribute to late diagnosis with accompanying increased morbidity and mortality. Self-efficacy (SE) has been demonstrated to be predictive of several health behaviors, but limited evidence about SE for Pap smear screening exists. OBJECTIVES: To develop, test, and refine the conceptually based Self-Efficacy Scale for Pap Smear Screening Participation (SES-PSSP). METHODS: This correlational, descriptive study included a purposive sampling of sheltered wo

Self-sampling experiences among non-attendees to cervical screening.

OBJECTIVE: High coverage and attendance is essential to positive cervical cancer screening results. Offering self-sampling for HPV-testing to the non-attendees of the program may improve attendance rates. Information on women's perceptions and experiences with self-sampling (acceptability) is needed to further optimize attendance by this method. METHODS: A questionnaire study focusing on women's experiences on the screening method was embedded in a trial investigating the effects and feasibility of self-sampling among non-attendees of cervical screening in 31 Finnish municipalities in 2011-20

Important areas of the central binocular visual field for daily functioning in the visually impaired.

PURPOSE: To determine the areas of the central binocular visual field which correspond best with self-reported vision related activity limitations (VRAL) in individuals with visual impairment using a clinically relevant and accessible technique. METHODS: One hundred participants with mixed visual impairment undertook binocular threshold visual field testing using a Humphrey 30-2 SITA Fast program. The Activity Inventory (AI) was administered to assess overall, mobility related and reading related self-reported VRAL as part of a face-to-face clinical interview. Different eccentricities of the

Matching laboratory and real-world listening environments with ecological momentary assessment improves prediction of speech perception.

Laboratory speech-in-noise measures fail to predict real-world listening performance. This study tested whether matching laboratory to real-world environments using self-reported noise sources from ecological momentary assessment (EMA) improves predictions. Speech intelligibility and listening effort were measured in virtual acoustic environments in 51 normal-hearing adults, who then self-rated both via EMA for 1 week. Laboratory intelligibility predicted real-world intelligibility only when laboratory and real-world environments were matched. Effort results were not significant. Findings sugg

Concurrent heroin self-administration and intracranial self-stimulation in rats.

In a two-lever testing chamber, rats lever pressed for lateral hypothalamic brain stimulation or intravenous heroin reinforcers on a concurrent FR1 FR1 schedule of reinforcement. Responding for stimulation did not alter the rate of heroin self-administration, and responding for heroin caused increased responding for stimulation. Discontinuing heroin injections, or administering 3 mg/kg of naloxone, disrupted responding for both reinforcers, while changing the unit dose of heroin did not appreciably affect response rates for stimulation. This experiment demonstrates that rats are able to lever

Development and psychometric evaluation of a lymphoedema self-management behaviour questionnaire for breast cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: The study was aimed to develop and evaluate a lymphoedema self-management behaviour questionnaire (LSMBQ) for breast cancer patients. METHODS: The initial version of the behaviour questionnaire was developed based on the framework of self-management and the evidence summary of lymphoedema self-management. Two rounds of expert consultation were conducted to validate the questionnaire's content validity. A cross-sectional survey was then conducted in breast wards of two hospitals in China to evaluate the reliability and validity of this scale. Exploratory structural equation model w

Limited-Variant Screening vs Comprehensive Genetic Testing for Familial Hypercholesterolemia Diagnosis.

IMPORTANCE: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is the most common inherited cardiovascular disease and carries significant morbidity and mortality risks. Genetic testing can identify affected individuals, but some array-based assays screen only a small subset of known pathogenic variants. OBJECTIVE: To identify the number of clinically significant variants associated with FH that would be missed by an array-based, limited-variant screen when compared with next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based comprehensive testing. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study compared compr

Anosmia, ageusia, and other COVID-19-like symptoms in association with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test, across six national digital surveillance platforms: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple voluntary surveillance platforms were developed across the world in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a real-time understanding of population-based COVID-19 epidemiology. During this time, testing criteria broadened and health-care policies matured. We aimed to test whether there were consistent associations of symptoms with SARS-CoV-2 test status across three surveillance platforms in three countries (two platforms per country), during periods of testing and policy changes. METHODS: For this observational study, we used data of observations from three voluntee

The Role of Health Networks in Disseminating Knowledge about Infant HIV Testing in Rural Uganda: Population-Based Sociocentric Network Study.

Early testing of infants exposed to HIV can significantly decrease mortality for those linked to HIV treatment. Infants exposed to HIV should first be tested at 6 weeks of age, but only 60% are tested as recommended. Little research has focused on the role of social networks in disseminating information about infant HIV testing. We conducted a cross-sectional, sociocentric network study of all adults living in a rural parish in Uganda (N=1,383) and gathered data on socio-demographic characteristics, self-reported HIV status, and knowledge about infant testing recommendations. We administered a

The Predictive Value of Preadolescent Suicidal Ideation Reporter Discrepancies in the ABCD Study.

Little data exist to guide suicide assessment protocols in preadolescent youth. Using the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) data (N = 10,010) at baseline (ages 9-10) and 24-month follow-up (ages 11-12), this report investigates informant agreement/disagreement in caregiver- and youth- reports of suicidal ideation and their associations with youth sex assigned at birth and symptomatology across preadolescence. Using the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (K-SADS) at both timepoints, four informant discrepancy groups were created from caregiver- and youth- repo

[Psychometric properties of the Hungarian version of the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale - Short Version (IUS-12)].

INTRODUCTION: Intolerance of uncertainty is the tendency to react negatively to an uncertain situation, regardless of the probability of the occurrence of the event and its consequences. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) can also be conceptualized as a personality trait that is prominent in many anxiety and rumination-related pathologies. A growing body of research highlights its key role in understanding anxiety disorders. METHOD: The aim of present study was to investigate the dimensionality, validity and reliability of the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale in a large non-clinical sample (N =

Measurement implications on the association between self-reported concussion history and depression: An NFL-LONG study.

ObjectiveThis study examined how associations of self-reported concussion history and depression vary based on different variable characterizations. Methods Former NFL players (n = 1,697) completed a General Health Survey, indicating the number of concussions they sustained during their football career and whether a physician had diagnosed them with depression, and the PROMIS 4-item Depression scale. Self-reported concussion history was characterized as: a 3-category variable (0, 1-2, 3+) with (1) indicator variables and (2) as an ordinal variable; a 5-category variable (0, 1-2, 3-5, 6-9, 10+)

Academic skills, self-perceptions, and grades in university students with a history of multiple concussions: The mediating roles of processing speed and psychological symptoms.

This study determined if university students with a history of multiple concussions may be at risk for academic difficulties and poor academic performance. We investigated if executive functioning, processing speed, and/or psychological symptoms might partially account for differences in academic performance of students with and without a history of multiple concussions. University students with a history of three or more concussions (n = 58), one concussion (n = 57), or no concussion (n = 57) completed academic, cognitive, and psychological assessments. Students with a history of multiple con

Mirror writing resulting from an egocentric representation disorder: a case report.

Buchwald (1878 ) used the term 'mirror writing' to indicate writing in the reverse direction to what is normal in a particular language and in which the individual letters are also reversed. Cases of healthy individuals (i.e., Leonardo da Vinci and Lewis Carroll) as well as brain-damaged patients have been described in the literature. Here, we report the case of PM, a 70-year-old right-handed woman who showed right hemiplegia and mirror writing following a stroke in the left lenticular nucleus and internal capsulae. PM underwent a complete neuropsychological evaluation, which included copying,

Anosognosia in neurodegenerative disease.

Patients with neurological disorders are often partially or completely unaware of the deficits caused by their disease. This impairment is referred to as anosognosia, and it is very common in neurodegenerative disease, particularly in frontotemporal dementia. Anosognosia has significant impacts on function and quality of life for patients with neurodegenerative disease and their caregivers, but the phenomenon has received little formal study, especially in non-Alzheimer's (non-AD) dementias. Furthermore, few studies have attempted to systematically verify the potential role of specific cogniti
