Yellow fever risk assessment in the Central African Republic.

Yellow fever still causes high burden in several areas of sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. There are few well-designed epidemiological studies and limited data about yellow fever in Africa. Staples et al., in a recently published paper in Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene, performed a nationwide study in the Central African Republic (CAR) assessing infection risk and the operational impact of preventive measures. The rapid assessment of human, non-human and mosquito data call attention to the potential risk of future yellow fever outbreaks in the CAR and els

Dog and cat bites.

Animal bites account for 1% of all emergency department visits in the United States and more than $50 million in health care costs per year. Most animal bites are from a dog, usually one known to the victim. Most dog bite victims are children. Bite wounds should be cleaned, copiously irrigated with normal saline using a 20-mL or larger syringe or a 20-gauge catheter attached to the syringe. The wound should be explored for tendon or bone involvement and possible foreign bodies. Wounds may be closed if cosmetically favorable, such as wounds on the face or gaping wounds. Antibiotic prophylaxis s

Synthetic cannabinoids and potential reproductive consequences.

Increases in emergency room visits due to abuse of designer drugs, popularly known by the street names "K2" and "Spice," are a cause for social, judicial, and clinical concerns. The psychoactive components in these herbal drugs mainly consist of different synthetic cannabinoids, and users of these street drugs are primarily within the age group of 12 to 20years old. The abusive use of synthetic cannabinoids results in anxiety, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, elevated blood pressure, tremors, seizures, hallucinations, and paranoid behavior, but the effects of maternal use of synthetic cannabinoi

Dog bites: an opportunity for parent education in the pediatric emergency department.

OBJECTIVES: This study focuses on parental report of exposure to dogs and highlights the potential for using a computer kiosk in an urban pediatric emergency department to increase knowledge around dog bite safety. METHODS: Nine hundred one parents of young children completed a kiosk assessment and received a report that contained information aimed at increasing knowledge about either dog bite prevention (PAR-DB, n = 453) or other safety behaviors (PAR-S, n = 448). The participants who received the dog bite prevention report (PAR-DB) were asked questions about exposure to dogs as part of the

Residual activity and integrity of PermaNet® 2.0 after 24 months of household use in a community randomised trial of long lasting insecticidal nets against visceral leishmaniasis in India and Nepal.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends several brands of long lasting insecticidal net (LN) for protection against insect vectors but also advises national programmes to monitor and evaluate performance under local conditions to help them select the most suitable LN for their setting. During the course of a community randomised trial of LNs against visceral leishmaniasis in northern India and Nepal, opportunity arose to assess the efficacy of PermaNet 2.0 (Vestergaard-Frandsen, Denmark) after two years of use against sandfly vectors. Between 63% (India) and 78% (Nepal) of LNs became ho

A combined strategy to improve the control of Schistosoma mansoni in areas of low prevalence in Brazil.

Results of stool examinations for infections with Schistosoma mansoni among schoolchildren, living in a village of Minas Gerais State, Brazil, were used as an indicator to identify schistosomiasis-positive individuals within the entire population. This new approach is based on dividing the community into schoolchildren, members of households of schistosomiasis-positive and -negative schoolchildren, and members of households without schoolchildren. Each subgroup was evaluated comparing different sampling efforts with the predetermined "gold standard" to find the best relationship between detect

Patient-delivered partner treatment for Trichomonas vaginalis infection: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Infections with Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) are common and recurrence rates are high. Better methods of treating partners of women with trichomoniasis are needed. GOAL: To determine if patient-delivered partner treatment (PDPT) is better and more cost-effective than partner referral. STUDY DESIGN: Women attending a family planning clinic who were culture-positive and treated for TV (N = 463) were randomized to either standard partner referral (PR), booklet-enhanced partner referral (BEPR), or PDPT. At baseline and 1 month, women were interviewed and cultured for TV. Detailed cost

Effectiveness of different approaches to mass delivery of praziquantel among school-aged children in rural communities in Nigeria.

Schistosomiasis is hyperendemic in Nigeria. The national policy on schistosomiasis control has adopted praziquantel as the main drug of use in the control strategy aimed at reducing morbidity. However, the best delivery channel for praziquantel in schistosomiasis control in Nigeria is yet to be determined. This study assessed different channels for praziquantel delivery in a mass treatment effort. Three groups, each of two communities, were assigned to one of the following three channels: health facility (HF), school, and community for mass delivery of praziquantel to school-aged children. Nutrition in adolescence.

This review discusses five questions concerning nutrition in adolescence. Do adolescents have special nutritional needs? What are the recommended dietary intakes? What do adolescent schoolchildren eat? What nutritional disorders occur at this age? The prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia, rickets, coeliac disease, iodine deficiency, dental caries, weight disorders, zinc deficiency and pellagra are discussed. What is the role of school meals or other food supplementation programmes?

Knowledge, perceptions and health behavior pertaining to Schistosoma mansoni related illness in Machakos district, Kenya.

This study on indigenous knowledge, preferences and health behavior among households and traditional healers in an area endemic Schistosomiasis mansoni in central Kenya showed that the population used modern and traditional health services interchangeably for intestinal illness with similar results. Cultural, economic and social factors in the utilization of different health services were identified. Antischistosomal treatment in the study population resulted in higher cure rates than those observed either hospital and health center treatment or the use of herbal medicines. Kamba knowledge and

Automated cardiac arrest detection and emergency service alerting using device-independent smartwatch technology: proof-of-principle.

INTRODUCTION: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a leading cause of mortality. Automated detection could improve survival by reducing delays in first responder activation. This study provides proof-of-principle for a device-independent technology that can (A) distinguish presence versus absence of spontaneous circulation, and (B) reliably alert emergency medical services (EMS). METHODS: Circulatory arrest data were collected from three groups: (1) volunteers undergoing temporarily restricted blood flow to the arm using a cuff, (2) patients undergoing cardioplegic cardiac arrest for hear

Epidemiology of Pediatric Dog Walking-Related Injuries Among Children Presenting to US Emergency Departments, 2001 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: Dog walking is associated with a significant injury burden among adults, but the risk of injury associated with dog walking among children is poorly understood. This study describes the epidemiology of children treated at US emergency departments for injuries related to leash-dependent dog walking. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database was retrospectively analyzed to identify children (5 to 18 years of age) presenting to US emergency departments between 2001 and 2020 with dog walking-related injuries. Primary outcomes included annual estimate

Integrating Case Detection of Visceral Leishmaniasis and Other Febrile Illness with Vector Control in the Post-Elimination Phase in Nepal.

Nepal has completed the attack phase of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) elimination and now needs active case detection (ACD) and vector control methods that are suitable to the consolidation and maintenance phases. We evaluated different ACD approaches and vector control methods in Saptari district. We assessed 1) mobile teams deployed in villages with VL cases in 2015 to conduct combined camps for fever and skin lesions to detect VL/PKDL (post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis) and other infections; 2) an incentive approach by trained female community health volunteers (FCHVs) in villages with no V

Prevalence and associated risk factors of intestinal parasitic infections among asymptomatic food handlers in Wollo University student's cafeteria, Northeastern Ethiopia.

OBJECTIVE: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are among the major public health and socioeconomic problems in developing countries like Ethiopia. Food-handlers that directly deal with production and distribution of foods between societies are one of the most important sources to transmit parasitic infections to humans. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated risk factors of intestinal parasites among asymptomatic food-handlers working in students' cafeteria of Wollo University, Northeastern Ethiopia. RESULT: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 asympto

Macroepidemiological aspects of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus detection by major United States veterinary diagnostic laboratories over time, age group, and specimen.

This project investigates the macroepidemiological aspects of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) RNA detection by veterinary diagnostic laboratories (VDLs) for the period 2007 through 2018. Standardized submission data and PRRSV real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) test results from porcine samples were retrieved from four VDLs representing 95% of all swine samples tested in NAHLN laboratories in the US. Anonymized data were retrieved and organized at the case level using SAS (SAS® Version 9.4, SAS® Institute, Inc., Cary, NC) with the use

BACKGROUND: Snake envenomation is an underestimated pathology in sub-Saharan Africa associated with severe emergencies, and even death in case of late presentation. We herein present a case of severe envenomation managed at the surgical emergency department of the Yaoundé Central Hospital. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 47-year-old female farmer with no relevant past history who sustained a snakebite by an Echis occellatus viper during an agricultural activity. Her initial management consisted in visiting a traditional healer who administered her some herbal remedies orally and appl

Comparison of sensitivity and faecal egg counts of Mini-FLOTAC using fixed stool samples and Kato-Katz technique for the diagnosis of Schistosoma mansoni and soil-transmitted helminths.

Accurate diagnostic tools for human helminthiasis are crucial for epidemiological surveys, improved patient management, and evaluation of community-based intervention studies. However, the diagnosis of intestinal schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis heavily relies on stool microscopy using the Kato-Katz technique, which has a low sensitivity. The Mini-FLOTAC method is an alternative microscopy-based technique, but its diagnostic performance using sodium acetate-acetic acid-formalin-(SAF)-fixed stool specimens has not been validated. The fixation of stool samples for later examina
