Since the demonstration of opiate receptors in the spinal cord in the mid-1970s, investigators have been looking for the most effective epidural narcotic. Gabexate mesilate (GM), a synthetic serine protease inhibitor with a short half-life time of approx. 80 sec, was applied as the exclusive anticoagulant in small scale extracorporeal circulation in narcotized dogs and sheep. The sheep body louse Damalinia ovis is a potentially serious problem affecting the value of the fleece and possibly causing reduced weight gains. Control has been based on the dipping or showering of sheep using insecticidal oil in water emulsions. The results using a pour-on formulation of the synthetic pyrethroid cypermethrin to control louse infestation are reported. Application rates of 5 mg/kg or more gave 99 to 100 per cent control.

Intrauterine growth retardation in fetal sheep was caused by removal of endometrial caruncles prior to conception. Such fetuses are chronically hypoxaemic and to establish their ability to withstand additional episodes of hypoxia, the effects of administration of 9% O2 to the pregnant ewe was investigated. Using culture, immunofluorescence and fetal serology, leptospiral infection was demonstrated in aborted, stillborn and weak lambs from nine out of 42 flocks investigated during the 1980 and 1981 lambing seasons. A total of 3722 sera was obtained from 188 flocks widely distributed throughout England and Wales; three sera were randomly selected from each flock and tested in the microscopic agglutination test for leptospiral antibodies. The distribution of salmonellas along the gastrointestinal tract and in associated lymph nodes were studied in 100 sheep and 100 cattle at slaughter. Explant cultures were initiated from adenocarcinoma of the small intestine in sheep and from various metastases. Several cell types grew, most being fibroblastic in nature.
