A 34 years old male, labourer by occupation was brought to our trauma centre in an inebriated state with a history of fall from a height of approximately 10 feet. He complained of pain in the right elbow. A complete examination of the affected upper limb revealed an ipsilateral anterior shoulder dislocation and a posterior elbow dislocation with no other concomitant injuries. Both the dislocations were reduced conservatively and the patient was successfully managed. The patient is absolutely fine now, 6 months post his dislocation and has resumed back to his work. This case has been presented

Avulsion fracture of coracoid process with acromioclavicular joint dislocation is extremely rare. We report a case of coracoid avulsion with acromioclavicular disruption in a 24-year-old man who sustained injuries in a road traffic accident. Although acromioclavicular (AC) dislocation was obvious from an initial radiograph, coracoid avulsion was picked up in a CT scan. Open reduction and internal fixations of the coracoid with a 4 mm cannulated screw, an AC joint with two K-wires and an anchor suture, resulted in rapid recovery. The patient had complete range of shoulder movements at the end o

It is often not easy to classify a rotator cuff tear into traumatic or non-traumatic. For individual medical examinations the classification depends basically on the following four criteria: Case history, analysis of the accident, analysis of the complaints after the accident (or even before) and the pathomorphological findings. The aim of this study was to identify findings in the magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder joints of patients with rotator cuff tears that could help in the differentiation of traumatic versus non-traumatic. As a result it could be shown that infraspinatus and su

Unilateral shoulder dislocation is known to be one of the most common joint dislocations. However, simultaneous bilateral shoulder dislocations are rare, especially anterior dislocations. We report a case of an 84-year-old woman who presented to the urgency room with symmetrical bilateral anterior shoulder dislocation 12 hours after falling on a treadmill. She presented with bilateral pain, functional impairment, prominent acromion, flattened shoulder, and, in the right upper limb, paresthesias on the dorsum of the hand and extension deficit of the fingers. Closed reduction of both shoulders w

Dislocations of the shoulder are the most common joint dislocations seen in the emergency department, and complications of shoulder dislocations are more frequent than is generally believed. It is vital that emergency physicians have current knowledge of complications associated with shoulder dislocations because of their important role in recognition and prevention. Delayed recognition of complications can have an impact on the long-term outcome of patients. Prompt recognition and follow-up are essential. Most references address reduction methods rather than recognition of specific complicati

This study investigated the anatomical details of the axillary and radial nerves in 50 upper limbs from 29 adult formalin-embalmed cadavers, and ten fresh upper limbs. The focus was on understanding the course, division, and ramifications of these nerves to improve treatment of shoulder dysfunction caused by axillary nerve damage. The axillary nerve divided anteriorly and posteriorly before passing the quadrangular space in all specimens, with specific distances to the first ramifications. It was found that the deltoid muscle's clavicular and acromial parts were always innervated by the anteri

CONTEXT: Shoulder pain is pervasive in swimmers of all ages. However, given the limited number of prospective studies, injury risk factors in swimmers remain uncertain.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent to which the risk factors of previous injury, poor movement competency, erroneous freestyle swimming technique, and low perceived susceptibility to sport injury were associated with noncontact musculoskeletal injury in collegiate swimmers.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
SETTING: College natatorium.
PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-seven National College Athletic Association Divisi

There have been several descriptions of variant anatomy of the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT). A recent literature review identified 8 cases of anomalous intracapsular attachment of the LHBT. In this report, we discuss a distinctive case of a young athlete who presented with symptoms consistent with bilateral superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) tears that were unresponsive to conservative measures. Magnetic resonance imaging and arthroscopic findings of this patient confirmed that the patient had type II SLAP tears, a Buford complex anteriorly, and perhaps most important, confl

BACKGROUND: The overhead-throwing athlete is a unique patient, requiring an elite, precise functional ability. Superior labral tears are quite common, and the percentage of athletes who return to play after superior labrum anterior-posterior (SLAP) repair has been variable. A tear of the infraspinatus caused by either internal impingement or tension overload may compromise this return.
HYPOTHESIS: The rate of return to a level of play similar to or greater than the preinjury level after repair of combined SLAP and infraspinatus injuries will be lower than in previous reports of SLAP repair al

Overhand throwing places high loads and stresses on the joints and tissues of the shoulder and arm. As a result, throwing athletes regularly demonstrate altered shoulder internal and external ranges of motion where internal rotation (IR) is decreased and external rotation is increased in the dominant arm when compared with the nondominant arm. This alteration can exist as a result of alterations to the bones (humeral retroversion), capsule (posterior thickening), or muscle (passive stiffness known as thixotropy). When the amount of IR or total arc of motion difference reaches a certain thresho

We report two patients who had chronic mechanical pain due to substantial cartilage defects documented by arthrography. One of these patients had pain in the hip and declined surgical treatment. The other had pain in the glenohumeral joint; surgery found a fissure in the glenoid fossa cartilage and provided prompt pain relief. These two cases serve as reminders that investigation of the cartilage and subchondral bone in young patients with mechanical pain should not be confined to the convex articular surfaces, although these are more likely to sustain trauma-related damage than concave surfac

To allow adequate access to the subacromial region of the shoulder the authors designed a multipurpose approach. The exposure consists of an anterior and a posterior part. In the anterior part, the deltoid fibres are separated between the anterior and middle thirds form the acromioclavicular joint for 5 cm distally; this provides the required access for the management of impingement syndrome, calcific tendinitis, bicipital tendon lesions and most tears of the rotator cuff. By extending the anterior part of the incision posteriorly over the supraspinatus muscle, this muscle may be advanced late

Radiofrequency ablation (RF) energy devices are increasingly being used in arthroscopic surgery. This is a case report of a 53-year-old man who had second-degree burns of the shoulder and chest wall as a result of fluid overheating due to RF. During an extensive arthroscopic bursal dissection of the left shoulder, the suction device on the RF wand and the valve was left open, allowing fluid to drip onto the chest and arm of the patient. Three days after his surgery, on his first postoperative visit, the dressings were removed, and the patient was noted to have severe blistering on the lateral

UNLABELLED: In a prospective study we examined the dominant shoulder of 11 athletes from the 1992 German Olympic water polo team. Their mean age was 25.4 +/- 3.5 years. Water polo had been practised generally for 14.1 +/- 4.3 years and professionally for 11.6 +/- 3.9 years. The weekly training amounted to between 12.5 and 19.5 hours. All athletes were submitted to standardised clinical, sonographical and MRI tests. In 5 cases we found anamnestic and/or clinical indications of rotator cuff pathology. In all 5 cases the supraspinatus tendon was affected, and in three cases both the supra- and th

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries among gastroenterologists are common. Our study describes risk factors and consequences of injury by comparing provider-specific anthropometric and objective procedural data to self-reported injury patterns.
METHODS: A validated MSK symptom survey was sent to gastroenterologists to gauge prevalence, distribution, and severity of active injury. Respondents' procedural activities over 7 years were collected via an endoscopic database.
RESULTS: 64 surveys were completed. 54 respondents had active pain; 53.1% reported activity-limiting injury.

Imaging has a paramount role in postsurgical assessment. Radiologists need to be familiar with the different surgical procedures to be able to identify expected postsurgical appearances and also detect potential complications. This article reviews the indications, normal expected postsurgical appearances, and complications of the most frequently used surgical procedures in the shoulder, elbow, and wrist. The emphasis is on points that should not be overlooked in the surgical planning.

The long head of the biceps (LHB) is commonly implicated in shoulder pathology due to its anatomic course and intimacy with the rotator cuff and superior labrum of the glenoid. Treatment of tendinosis of the LHB may be required secondary to partial thickness tears, instability/subluxation, associated rotator cuff tears, or SLAP (superior labrum, anterior to posterior) lesions. Treatment options include open or arthroscopic techniques for tenodesis vs tenotomy. Controversy exists in the orthopedic literature regarding the preferred procedure. The all-arthroscopic biceps tenodesis technique is a
