Embedding Social-Emotional Learning in Elementary School-Based Speech-Language Therapy: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Many students with communication disorders have unique social-emotional needs, yet school speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are not typically trained in how to address those needs. We developed a new training (STIRS [SLP Training to Increase Resilience in Students]) to equip elementary school SLPs to embed social-emotional learning (SEL) practices within their routine speech-language sessions with K-3 students with communication disorders. The primary objective of this pilot trial was to evaluate the preliminary effects and feasibility of STIRS. METHOD: This was a single-blind, par

Whole Genome Sequencing for Surveillance of Diphtheria in Low Incidence Settings.

Corynebacterium diphtheriae (C. diphtheriae) is a relatively rare pathogen in most Western countries. While toxin producing strains can cause pharyngeal diphtheria with potentially fatal outcomes, the more common presentation is wound infections. The diphtheria toxin is encoded on a prophage and can also be carried by Corynebacterium ulcerans and Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. Currently, across Europe, infections are mainly diagnosed in travelers and refugees from regions where diphtheria is more endemic, patients from urban areas with poor hygiene, and intravenous drug users. About half

Who's at risk for emergent depression years later? Predictive modeling in a nine-year longitudinal cohort.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is prevalent in adulthood, but there remains a dearth of studies identifying predictors of emergent MDD in adulthood with high-dimensional biopsychosocial predictor sets. Our study thus examined how explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) models might accurately detect predictors of emergent MDD nine years later. METHODS: Community adults who did not meet diagnostic criteria for MDD at Wave 1 (W1; 2004–2006) participated in the current study (N = 931). Forty-six W1 validated composite variables, including inflammation, childhood maltreatment, copin

The Cerebellar Neuropsychiatric Rating Scale Version 2: Development and Validation.

The affective component of the cerebellar cognitive affective / Schmahmann syndrome (CCAS) reflects neuropsychiatric symptoms across five domains: attentional control, emotional control, autism spectrum, psychosis spectrum, and social skill set, each with overshoot (hypermetric) and undershoot (hypometric) manifestations. The Cerebellar Neuropsychiatric Rating Scale (CNRS) is a 35-item informant-report questionnaire that detects and quantifies these symptoms. We amended the CNRS items to produce Self- and Informant-Report versions, conducted cognitive debrief to evaluate each item's readabilit

US drug policy does not align with experts' rankings of drug harms: a multi-criteria decision analysis.

Background United States drug policy is primarily based on the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 and largely contradicts scientific evidence about how to mitigate drugs' harms. Expert consensus on drug harms could inform policy that improves the health of people who use drugs while reducing negative societal impacts of drug use. Therefore, this study adapted and extended the relevant 2010 United Kingdom multi-criteria decision analysis, rating drug harms by criteria comprising health and social impacts to people who use drugs and their families, communities, and society. Methods Seventeen exper

Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a peer-delivered, relational, harm reduction intervention to improve mental health, quality of life, and related outcomes, for people experiencing homelessness and substance use problems: protocol for the 'SHARPS' cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Those experiencing homelessness and problem substance use find it challenging to access the healthcare and treatment they need. The Supporting Harm Reduction through Peer Support (SHARPS) feasibility study demonstrated that Peer Navigators can help these individuals to improve their service engagement, increase access to opioid substitution therapy, and lead to reductions in drug use and risky injection practices. Specifically, participants indicated that the lived experience of Peer Navigators was particularly helpful by enabling the development of trusting relationships. A cluste

EEG mapping in patients with social phobia.

Recent studies have suggested an information-processing bias in social phobia (SP). Little is known about the electrophysiological correlates of anxiety in SP. The aim of the present study was to investigate the quantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) in 25 drug-free patients with SP as compared with age- and sex-matched normal controls and to correlate anxiety and depressive symptoms with EEG data. EEG was recorded under vigilance-controlled and resting conditions. The Spielberger State and Trait Anxiety Scale (STAI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were administered to assess anxiety

Quantifying social contact dynamics in South Korea in the post-COVID-19 endemic phase: A cross-sectional survey for infectious disease transmission.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the dynamics of social contact patterns is crucial for modeling the spread of infectious diseases. Although previous studies have examined them globally, how relevant they are to social patterns in the endemic phase is still unclear. South Korea's distinct cultural norms, aging population, and declining fertility highlight the critical need for new, context-specific data. Here, we aim to conduct a contact survey in South Korea, providing age and location-specific contact estimates and quantifying patterns related to infectious disease transmission. METHODS: We conduc

The relationship between social determinants of health and postpartum weight retention based on the World Health Organization model: path analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum weight retention (PPWR) causes obesity, chronic diseases, and occurring adverse maternal-fetal and neonatal outcomes. Given the social factors' effect on health and disease and considering the lack of information on social determinants of health (SDH) effects on PPWR, this study was conducted to survey the relationship between SDH and PPWR based on the World Health Organization (WHO) model. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on 400 women six months after delivery in 2020. Twelve health centers were randomly selected from the three universities of Medical Sci

Moderators of the association between stigma and psychological and cancer-related symptoms in women with non-small cell lung cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Lung cancer patients, particularly women, are vulnerable to experience disease-related stigma, which is linked to greater psychological distress and worse treatment outcomes. To inform future stigma-resilience interventions, we examined if mindfulness, self-compassion, and social support might buffer the associations between perceived lung cancer stigma and psychological and cancer-related symptoms. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, women with recently diagnosed non-small cell lung cancer undergoing cancer treatment completed measures of Cataldo Lung Cancer Stigma Scale, depr

Risk factors for contracting malaria in six wards of Mudzi District, Zimbabwe: A case control-study.

Despite a significant decline in burden in the last two decades, malaria remains a significant global public health threat. Vector behaviour, climate, ecology, human economic and social behaviour, and quality of housing are some of the established predictors for contracting malaria. Zimbabwe has recorded a significant decline in malaria burden, however, districts like Mudzi continue to experience persistent malaria transmission despite well-performing indoor residual spraying programs. Persistent malaria transmission despite high IRS coverages point to human socio-economic behavior and health

Optimizing diabetes self-care in patients with limited health literacy: a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of SCT-based education with and without an AI-designed photo-novel.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) requires continuous self-care to prevent complications. Patients with limited health literacy often struggle to understand health information and adhere to treatment, resulting in poorer outcomes. Educational interventions tailored to improve self-care and health literacy arSCTe therefore essential. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a Social Cognitive Theory-based intervention, with and without health literacy strategies, in enhancing self-care among patients with T2DM and limited health literacy. METHODS: This interventional study included

Culturally and linguistically appropriate vaccine education (CLAVE) for Indigenous communities: design and implementation study of a community-based approach to digital vaccine education in the Central Highlands of Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: In Guatemala, childhood vaccination rates, particularly in Indigenous communities, are low due to inaccessible information and mistrust. Using a human-centered design (HCD) process with community partners, we developed CLAVE (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Vaccine Education), a video series on routine and human papillomavirus (HPV) immunization in Kaqchikel, K’iche’, and Spanish. Content was distributed via social media and through community health workers (CHWs). This study describes the instructional design process and assesses implementation feasibility through commun

It's a Match, Isn't It? Developing a Checklist on Matching Secondary Data at the Example of Job Control.

Few datasets simultaneously capture occupational exposures and health outcomes in a general working population. To understand associations between occupational exposures and health, researchers often combine existing datasets. As occupation codes are available in many datasets, combining these datasets seems a straight-forward option. However, the different purposes of these datasets and correspondingly their coding systems may complicate and bias matching procedures by dropping occupations, squeezing multiple occupations into one category, and linking them incorrectly. To develop a checklist

Trust, autonomy, and informed consent: a qualitative investigation of youth experiences accessing contraception in Canada.

We sought to understand, "What are the contraception access experiences, beliefs, attitudes, knowledge and needs of youth in Canada, from the perspectives of youth and youth service providers?" We explore person-centred contraception care and highlight the importance of fostering trust, autonomy, and informed consent. We conducted one-on-one semi-structured interviews with youth (aged 15-25) and healthcare providers (HCPs) across Canada, representing a diversity of rural and urban settings, gender, age, and ethnicities. Using social constructivist grounded theory, we identified key themes rela

The influence of glucose administration on stress reactivity and long-term memory in adult men and women.

Stress and the associated cortisol release have profound effects on long-term memory (LTM). While glucose increases the cortisol stress response and exhibits memory enhancing effects in non-stressful situations, the interaction of glucose and stress on LTM has rarely been studied. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the glucose-related amplification of the cortisol stress response would enhance LTM formation. Overall, N = 62 healthy, fasted adults (age M = 23.13, SD = 3.02; 54.84 % female) participated. They consumed a drink containing water or glucose and underwent a non-stressfu

Characterization of early markers of disease in the mouse model of mucopolysaccharidosis IIIB.

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) IIIB, also known as Sanfilippo Syndrome B, is a devastating childhood disease. Unfortunately, there are currently no available treatments for MPS IIIB patients. Yet, animal models of lysosomal storage diseases have been valuable tools in identifying promising avenues of treatment. Enzyme replacement therapy, gene therapy, and bone marrow transplant have all shown efficacy in the MPS IIIB model systems. A ubiquitous finding across rodent models of lysosomal storage diseases is that the best treatment outcomes resulted from intervention prior to symptom on

Digital crowdsourced intervention to promote HIV testing among MSM in China: study protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are an important HIV key population in China. However, HIV testing rates among MSM remain suboptimal. Digital crowdsourced media interventions may be a useful tool to reach this marginalized population. We define digital crowdsourced media as using social media, mobile phone applications, Internet, or other digital approaches to disseminate messages developed from crowdsourcing contests. The proposed cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) study aims to assess the effectiveness of a digital crowdsourced intervention to increase HIV testing uptake a
