PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent advances in our understanding of the mechanism of action of apoprotein A-I (apoA-I) mimetic peptides and improved methods for the oral delivery of peptides.
RECENT FINDINGS: The apoA-I mimetic peptides are based on the structure of the major apoprotein of HDL with the expectation that they may also mimic some of the antiatherogenic functions of HDL. Recent work has provided insight into mechanisms by which they may be antioxidative and anti-inflammatory. In addition, recent work has shifted the focus of the site of action of the mimetic peptides to the smal

Success in biological control of plant diseases remains inconsistent in the field. A collection of well-characterized Streptomyces antagonists (n = 19 isolates) was tested for their capacities to inhibit pathogenic Streptomyces scabies (n = 15 isolates). There was significant variation among antagonists in ability to inhibit pathogen isolates and among pathogens in their susceptibility to inhibition. Only one antagonist could inhibit all pathogens, and antagonist-pathogen interactions were highly specific, highlighting the limitations of single-strain inoculum in biological control. However, t

We report for the first time that expression of potato PR10a gene in faba bean causes enhanced tolerance to drought and salinity. Grain legumes such as soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill), pea (Pisum sativum L.) and faba bean (Vicia faba L.) are staple sources of protein for human and animal nutrition. Among grain legumes, faba bean is particularly sensitive to abiotic stress (in particular osmotic stress due to lack of water or enhanced soil salinity) and often suffers from severe yield losses. Many stress responsive genes have been reported with an effect on improving stress tolerance in model

Serratia sp. ATCC 39006 (S39006) is a Gram-negative bacterium that is virulent in plant (potato) and invertebrate animal (Caenorhabditis elegans) models. It produces two secondary metabolite antibiotics, a prodigiosin and a carbapenem, and the exoenzymes pectate lyase and cellulase. We showed previously that deletion of the RNA chaperone Hfq abolished antibiotic production and attenuated virulence in both animal and plant hosts. Hfq and dependent small RNAs (sRNAs) are known to regulate the post-transcriptional expression of rpoS, which encodes σ(S), the stationary phase sigma factor subunit o

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Carotenoids are potentially malabsorbed in patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP). The aims of this study were: (1) to determine the prevalence of low levels of each of the major carotenoids in subjects with CP; (2) to compare carotenoids in CP subjects with or without vascular disease and (3) to test the effect of an increase in dietary lycopene intake in patients with low plasma lycopene concentration.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: Simultaneous determination of carotenoids was done in 80 patients with CP and 20 healthy subjects, using high-performance liquid chromatography. Of t

Although potatoes represent a large part of diets worldwide, adverse reactions to them are considered uncommon and usually result from ingestion, mainly in children. In contrast, immediate reactions to contact with raw potato has been reported more frequently in adults, usually in the form of an oral contact dermatitis or contact urticaria, but also may manifest as asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis, wheezing or even anaphylaxis. We report a case of non-occupational allergic contact urticaria caused by raw potato, which we then documented by prick testing.

Disinfection of produce is principally used to inactivate spoilage microbes and may also reduce the risk of consumer exposure to enteric pathogens. However, the rate and extent of enteric virus inactivation by free chlorine on produce has not been adequately characterized. Experiments were performed to determine the kinetics of free chlorine inactivation of hepatitis A virus (HAV) and the indicator virus coliphage MS2 on strawberries (SBs), cherry tomatoes (CTs), and head lettuce (HL). The oxidant demand of these produce items also was determined. When produce items were exposed to approximate

We have examined the potential of a well-specified, minimally processed potato product as a vehicle for the exposure of consumers to Clostridium botulinum neurotoxin. The product is a relatively simple combination of raw potato flakes, flour, starch and other minor ingredients and has an extended lifetime under refrigeration conditions. A combination of information and data, from a variety of sources that includes the manufacturer, has shown that the product is particularly safe with respect to non-proteolytic C. botulinum hazards. The model concentrates on a simple end point, the toxicity of

AIMS: Phytic acid, a major constituent of cereals, pulses, and seeds has been advocated as an important antioxidant component of dietary fibre that affords possible protection against colorectal cancer. This is supported by experimental studies showing it has antineoplastic activity in animal models of both colon and breast cancer. To date the concentration of faecal phytic acid in human clinical groups has not been evaluated. Therefore the faecal phytic acid content of adenoma patients drawn from a placebo controlled calcium intervention trial was evaluated.
METHODS: Phytic acid was measured

Dry matter (DM), starch, crude protein (CP), amino acids (AA) and diaminopimelic acid (DAPA) were estimated in the contents of the digestive tract of slaughtered pigs, which were fed a basal diet with raw (rKSt) or with cooked (QuSt) potato starch. When fed rKSt, there was larger quantities of starch and DAPA in the content of the distal small intestine and also of DM, CP, AA and DAPA in the contents of caecum and proximal colon, compared to QuSt. The bacterial breakdown of the raw potato starch granules in the proximal large intestine is shown by microscopic examinations. It is suggested, tha

BACKGROUND: Climate change is intensifying drought events, negatively affecting crop yields and quality. Enhancing plant recovery following drought is therefore critical for agricultural resilience. Within the holobiont framework, the plant microbiome plays a key role in modulating plant responses to environmental stress. Here, we evaluated the contribution of rhizosphere microbial transplants derived from Solanum lycopersicum cultivars differing in water-deficit-tolerance and prior exposure or not to water deficit to post-drought recovery in susceptible tomato plants.
RESULTS: Physiological …

In vitro tomato pollen tubes show a cytoplasmic calcium gradient that oscillates with the same period as growth. Pollen tube growth requires coordination between the tip-focused cytoplasmic calcium concentration ([Ca2+]cyt) gradient and the actin cytoskeleton. This [Ca2+]cyt gradient is necessary for exocytosis of small vesicles, which contributes to the delivery of new membrane and cell wall at the pollen tube tip. The mechanisms that generate and maintain this [Ca2+]cyt gradient are not completely understood. Here, we studied calcium dynamics in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) pollen tubes usi…

This study evaluated the effectiveness of four post-processing treatments-pasteurization at 65 °C (P65, 10 min) and 85 °C (P85, 10 min), microwave heating (MS, 750 W, 30 s), and retort treatment (RTS, 121 °C, 10 min)-for microbial reduction and quality maintenance of vacuum-packed potato cakes. No statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed in proximate composition (moisture, ash, protein, total starch). However, starch fractions appeared process-sensitive, with P65 increasing resistant starch and RTS/MS increasing apparent amylose. Color shifts were detected with L* and a*

Drought and salt stress severely constrain tomato growth and yield. The B-box (BBX) zinc finger transcription factor family is widely known for its roles in core developmental processes such as photomorphogenesis and flowering regulation, and its regulatory functions in abiotic stress responses have attracted increasing attention in recent years. However, the precise molecular mechanisms by which tomato BBX family members mediate drought and salt stress tolerance remain to be systematically elucidated. In this study, we functionally characterized SlBBX6, a tomato subfamily I BBX gene encoding

The reactive oxygen species (ROS) burst is a hallmark of immune responses, and its fine-tuned regulation is essential for balancing plant immunity and growth. Although mechanistic understanding of ROS production has improved in Arabidopsis, corresponding knowledge remains sparse in crops, particularly in the non-Brassicaceae species that lack PBL13-mediated negative regulation of the ROS burst. Here, we report an RLCK-V subfamily member in potato, StSOAK1, which negatively regulates disease resistance to the oomycete Phytophthora infestans and the fungus Botrytis cinerea. Furthermore, the pota

Gray mold disease is caused by Botrytis cinerea, which could severely reduce the production yield and quality of tomatoes. To explore more potential fungicides with new scaffolds for controlling gray mold disease, 10 aldehydes-thiourea derivatives were designed, synthesized, and assayed for inhibitory activity against three plant pathogenic fungi. The preliminary antifungal assay suggested that some title derivatives showed moderate to good antifungal activity against B. cinerea. In particular, compound 9 presented excellent in vitro antifungal activity against B. cinerea (half maximal effecti

In the present investigation, we utilized zinc nanoparticles (Zn-NPs) and bacterial endophytes to address the dual challenge of heavy metal (HM) toxicity in soil and Rhizoctonia solani causing root rot disease of tomato. The biocontrol potential of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens was harnessed, resulting in profound inhibition of R. solani mycelial growth and efficient detoxification of HM through strong production of various hydrolytic enzymes and metabolites. Surprisingly, Zn-NPs exhibited notable efficacy in suppressing mycelial growth and enhancing the seed germination (%)
