The Impact of Protective Face Coverings on Acoustic Markers in Voice: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Wearing respiratory protective masks (RPMs) has become common worldwide, especially in healthcare settings, since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hypotheses have suggested that sound transmission could be limited by RPMs, which possibly affects the characteristics of acoustic energy and speech intelligibility. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of RPMs on acoustic measurements through a systematic review with meta-analysis. METHODS: Five database searches were conducted, ranging from their inception to August 2023, as well as a manual search. Cross-secti…

Representation of spectral and temporal envelope of twitter vocalizations in common marmoset primary auditory cortex.

Cortical sensitivity in representations of behaviorally relevant complex input signals was examined in recordings from primary auditory cortical neurons (AI) in adult, barbiturate-anesthetized common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus). We studied the robustness of distributed responses to natural and degraded forms of twitter calls, social contact vocalizations comprising several quasi-periodic phrases of frequency and AM. We recorded neuronal responses to a monkey's own twitter call (MOC), degraded forms of their twitter call, and sinusoidal amplitude modulated (SAM) tones with modulation

The Effect of Decreased Audibility on MMSE Performance: A Measure Commonly Used for Diagnosing Dementia.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss and dementia are both prevalent in late adulthood. The most common test used to determine cognitive status in late adulthood, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), is presented face to face, usually in the context of the physician's office in the presence of background noise. Despite the problems of hearing loss and cognitive problems in late life, there is an absence of evidence linking hearing-related deficits to performance on the MMSE and dementia diagnoses. PURPOSE: This study examined the effect of decreased audibility on performance on the MMSE. RESEARCH D

Evidence for shared deficits in identifying emotions from faces and from voices in autism spectrum disorders and specific language impairment.

BACKGROUND: While autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and specific language impairment (SLI) have traditionally been conceptualized as distinct disorders, recent findings indicate that the boundaries between these two conditions are not clear-cut. While considerable research has investigated overlap in the linguistic characteristics of ASD and SLI, relatively less research has explored possible overlap in the socio-cognitive domain, particularly in terms of the emotion recognition abilities of these two groups of children. AIMS: To investigate facial and vocal emotion recognition in children with

Latent information in fluency lists predicts functional decline in persons at risk for Alzheimer disease.

OBJECTIVE: We constructed random forest classifiers employing either the traditional method of scoring semantic fluency word lists or new methods. These classifiers were then compared in terms of their ability to diagnose Alzheimer disease (AD) or to prognosticate among individuals along the continuum from cognitively normal (CN) through mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to AD. METHOD: Semantic fluency lists from 44 cognitively normal elderly individuals, 80 MCI patients, and 41 AD patients were transcribed into electronic text files and scored by four methods: traditional raw scores, clusterin

The modified Honig velopharyngoplasty - a new technique to treat hypernasality by palatal lengthening.

BACKGROUND: Palatal lengthening by pushback with a pharyngeal flap is a commonly used operative technique for the treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency. The conventional Honig velopharyngoplasty uses full thickness mucoperiosteal flaps for the oral lining of the defect. PURPOSE: A modification is described using only mucosal flaps, thus preserving the periosteum and the palatine arteries. Vascularisation of the hard palate is preserved and bone is not exposed, avoiding potential detrimental scar formation overlying the hard palate, which may affect normal outgrowth of the maxilla. Tongue reconstruction with free radial forearm flap after hemiglossectomy: a functional assessment.

Thirty-three patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the anteriolateral part of the tongue underwent a 50 percent resection of the tongue. The surgical defect was reconstructed with a microvascular radial forearm flap. All the flaps were especially designed to have a narrow waist, shaped like an omega in cross-section, thus allowing for a free tongue tip, and avoiding suturing the edge of the flap to the soft palate and tongue base. Sixteen patients were evaluated for swallowing and speech function at least 6 months following reconstruction. With this technique, the majority of the patients h

The Use of Segmental and Suprasegmental Sequencing Skills to Differentiate Children With and Without Childhood Apraxia of Speech: Protocol for a Comparative Accuracy Study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a motor-based speech sound disorder (SSD) with a core impairment in the planning and programming of spatiotemporal parameters of speech movement sequences. CAS may cause deficits in both segmental and suprasegmental components of speech, and it can severely affect children's ability to speak intelligibly and communicate effectively and impact their quality of life. Assessment tasks, such as the maximum performance tasks (MPT) and Syllable Repetition Task (SRT), examine children's segmental sequencing skills to assist with the diagnosis of CAS. I

Is the phonological loop responsible for intelligence-related differences in forward digit span?

Children with mild mental retardation were compared with CA-matched and verbal-age-matched children without mental retardation on a forward digit span task. Forward digit span is typically used as a measure of the phonological loop (Baddeley, 1986). We hypothesized that intelligence-related differences in forward digit span are largely due to central executive functioning rather than phonological loop functioning. Results showed that the highly significant group difference in forward digit span was reduced to nonsignificance when a measure of central executive functioning was covaried out.

Phonological dyslexia and phonological dysgraphia following left and right hemispherectomy.

Four adults who had hemispherectomies because of severe epilepsy following infantile of childhood damage to one hemisphere of the brain, are assessed on their reading and spelling abilities in an attempt to see if the two hemispheres are equipotential for these abilities in infancy. The psycholinguistic assessments of language processing in aphasia (PALPA) are used, and the results are interpreted from the viewpoint of hypotheses of "normal" right and left hemisphere reading abilities. Overall, the results suggest that the two hemispheres are equipotential at infancy for developing the skills

Interhemispheric balance patterns detected by selective phonemic dichotic laterality measures in four clinical subtypes of reading-disabled children.

Identifying disabilities in word-attack, word-recognition, or reading comprehension, allowed for four categories of reading disability: (1) reading comprehension only (RC), (2) word-attack plus comprehension (WA+RC), (3) word-attack, word-recognition, and comprehension (WA+WR+RC), and (4) word-attack but not comprehension (WA-RC). Along with age-matched controls (AMC) and developmental-delay controls (DDC), the disabled were tested on a directed-attention dichotic task using consonant-vowel combinations. Laterality results for each place of articulation (i.e., bilabial, alveolar, and velar) se

Ability to achieve gain/frequency response and SSPL-90 under three prescription formulas with in-the-ear hearing aids.

Custom in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids (standard linear amplifiers with single-pole-filter low-frequency tone control and a class A amplifier output stage) were fit to 90 ears using the revised National Acoustics Laboratories' formula (NAL-R), and to 20 ears each using Prescription of Gain/Output II (POGO II) and Memphis State University (MSU) formulas. Both real-ear insertion gain and 2-cc coupler gain were evaluated. Examination of differences between prescribed gain and that actually achieved in the fittings revealed that too much gain was often given in the low- and mid-frequency range and i

[CO2 laser in treating head and neck cancer].

CO2 laser is especially useful in treating cancer of tube- and cavity-organs. For carcinomas of the tongue, we have employed three types of laser usage. Carcinomas confined within the mucosa are treated by laser alone. For carcinomas invading the muscle to some extent, we make a mass reduction surgery by means of laser which is followed by (chemo)radiotherapy. Carcinomas with extensive muscular invasion are first treated with induction chemotherapy. If the chemotherapy is effective, we add laser surgery for the purpose of mass reduction and chemoradiotherapy follows. 26 patients were treated a

Cortical speech-in-noise processing reflects subcortical syllable encoding and lexical attention.

Speech-in-noise performance varies among individuals with similar hearing sensitivity. Such variability may manifest as varying cortical representations of speech in noise, which may stem from peripheral sensory fidelity and the efficacy of top-down attention. The present study examined how subcortical speech-syllable encoding and lexical attention shape cortical speech-in-noise representation, as measured by neural signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based on the amplitude ratio of auditory-evoked responses to the target speech onset and the noise onset. The result indicated that neural SNR significa
